As many Americans are grilling outside with friends and family, it’s important to remember the real reason for today’s Memorial Day holiday. State Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary, Col. Joey Strickland, asks Louisiana residents to take time today to remember our fallen heroes.

With the summer in full swing, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns the public about bacteria in public pools. Michelle Hlvasa (Vah-sah) with the CDC says there’s a germ called cryptosporidium that’s causing a lot of outbreaks linked to swimming. She says they’re seeing an uptick in the number of infections.

Hlvasa says crypto is a parasite that causes diarrhea that can last up to three weeks. She says it gets into the water when someone with diarrhea gets into the water. She says people get infected when they swallow dirty water.

Hlvasa says to protect others from getting crypto, stay out of the pool if you’ve had diarrhea recently. She advises people who have been sick to stay out of the water until you’re diarrhea free for at least two weeks.

It’s possible we could see another special session start 30 minutes after the current regular session ends on June 8th. That’s according to Jeremy Alford of LaPolitics.com who says the potential need for a fourth special session during Governor Edwards term is because the current fiscal session has bogged down over partisan politics.

Alford says it’s difficult to tell how successful a special session would be given the steep opposition of many budget bills. He says the Republican-led House has passed a budget that allocates only 97.5 million dollars available revenues and Democrats want to spend more.

Pet owners will soon have more time to claim their lost pets after a disaster. A measure by Gonzales Representative Clay Schexnayder allows pet parents 30 days to claim their fur babies following a state of emergency. Ag Commissioner Mike Strain says his agency takes in abandoned animals after disasters.

The bill won approval in both chambers and is awaiting a signature from Governor John Bel Edwards. The measure also allows for extensions because of extenuating circumstances like displacement. Strain says shelters will take ownership of the animals after the 30 day period.

Strain says 30 days is the national average to reclaim lost pets, and Louisiana needed this law on the books because up until now state law was silent on the matter. He says this new law will gives pet owners more hope of finding their lost pets after natural disasters.

LSU is expected to be a top eight national seed when the NCAA baseball pairings come out today. That means the Tigers will host a super regional series, if they win this weekend’s regional championship. Louisiana Economic Development has launched a business startup program for military veterans. Secretary Don Pierson says after learning LSU’s Baton Rouge campus was helping disabled veterans, LED created the Louisiana Veteran Entrepreneurship Program. He says many soldiers have a desire to start a small business after leaving active duty.

The Humane Society of Louisiana is asking for the public’s help in finding a man who threw a dog out of a moving vehicle in Marksville. A witness reported seeing a white male toss the dog out the window of a dark green Chevrolet last Sunday. Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to call 1-888-6-HUMANE.

Bayou Country Superfest ranks in the top 10 on Vivid Seat’s list of 2017 summer music festivals. This weekend’s festival in New Orleans came in at number 7 on the online ticket market place’s ranking, which is based on ticket sales. According to the site, Bayou Country Superfest’s $34 tickets are one of the least expensive of top festivals.

US Senator Bill Cassidy has filed a bill to help veterans pay reasonable costs of urgent care. The Veterans Emergency Room Relief Act would require the Department of Veterans Affairs to pay emergency room costs for military veterans. Congressman Clay Higgins of Louisiana’s third congressional district introduced companion legislation in the US House.

State Police arrest more than a dozen Acadiana residents as a result of an insurance fraud investigation. Master Trooper Brooks David says they received complaints last July about 16 individuals who were filing false insurance claims.

David says 13 people have been arrested so far, and three suspects are still at large.

AAA projects nearly 40 million Americans will travel this Memorial Day weekend, and State Police are asking travelers to make safety a priority. Trooper Dustin Dwight advises drivers to take extreme caution on the roadways this holiday weekend.

Governor John Bel Edwards signs the first piece of legislation from the 2017 regular session. The measure by Leesville Representative Jason Armes establishes the Louisiana Military Medics and Corpsmen Pilot Program, which seeks to help veterans translate their military skills into civilian trades. The new law allows veterans with medical military certifications to work under the supervision of a licensed physician.

Louisiana Economic Development and other partners create a program to help veterans start their own business after leaving active duty. Secretary Don Pierson says the Louisiana Veteran Entrepreneurship Program is a great way to thank those who fight for our freedom.

Pierson hopes this program will create 100 new jobs and generate $5 million in startup capital.

The Department of Health is facing a massive budget cut, and Secretary Rebekah Gee pleaded with the Senate Finance Committee to restore funding. But Mandeville Senator Jack Donahue says healthcare spending now accounts for nearly half of the state’s entire budget.

Donahue says the health budget has grown more than a billion dollars since 2010.

Today and tomorrow Louisiana residents can buy hurricane preparedness items at a discounted sales tax rate. Department of Revenue spokesperson Byron Henderson says lawmakers approved this tax holiday to encourage families to prepare for the hurricane season.

The LSU Tigers will face South Carolina at noon in the semi-finals of the SEC Tournament. The Bayou Bengals were off yesterday and this will be their third game in the tournament, while the Gamecocks will play their fifth game in as many days. South Carolina advanced to the semis with a 3-1 win over Kentucky yesterday. The other semi-final match-up today is Florida versus Arkansas. The Razorbacks routed Mississippi State nine to two yesterday, while the Gators also beat Mississippi State yesterday 12-3.

In the Sun Belt Tournament…the Ragin Cajuns sufffered a heart breaking loss. UL Lafayette was up 5-1, but gave up five runs in the ninth inning to Georgia Southern who ended up beating the Cajuns 7-to-6 in 11 innings. Rough outing for Dylan Moore, who gave up four runs. So UL Lafayette will have to wait if they will receive an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament.

All three Louisiana teams in the Southland Tournament have been eliminated. UNO beat Southeastern Louisiana 7-to-4, and top-seeded McNeese fell to Houston Baptist 5-4. And then the Privateers were sent packing when they lost to Sam Houston State 7-1. McNeese and Southeastern Louisiana are on the bubble to make the NCAA Tournament.

In softball, Florida State took Game 1 of its Super Regional Series with LSU by scoring two runs in the sixth inning to beat the Tigers 3-1. LSU will look to even up the series at 2 PM in Tallahassee.

The Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District approves funding to develop a master plan on renovating the Superdome. Saints officials say a master plan will also begin discussions for a long-term agreement between the state and the two professional franchises owned by Tom Benson. The teams’ existing lease agreements with Louisiana end in 2025.

A note on a napkin saved a woman’s life in West Monroe. KARD reports a woman was being held hostage by her boyfriend at a motel. She reportedly convinced 30-year-old Dennis Griffin to take her to Chili’s. While returning from the bathroom, she passed a note to her server asking for help. West Monroe Police responded immediately.

State health secretary Rebekah Gee pleaded with lawmakers to restore funding for her department, which is facing a massive budget cut. She says without matched state dollars, we won’t be able to draw down federal funds. She adds that healthcare benefits the entire state.

The Humane Society of Louisiana is seeking information on driver in Marksville who threw a dog out the window of a moving vehicle last Sunday afternoon. The man was driving a dark green Chevrolet. A witness took the dog to a local shelter, where a rescuer named her Penny. The Humane Society is also asking for donations towards Penny’s medical care, as she may need surgery on a fractured leg. Donations can be made at humane-la.gov.

The red hot LSU baseball team is enjoying a day off in Hoover, Alabama today after beating Kentucky 10-0 to advance to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament. The game ended in the middle of the seventh inning thanks to the league’s mercy rule in tournament play. The Fighting Tigers have scored 10 plus runs in four consecutive SEC games, which is the most LSU has done since 2000.

LSU will take the field tomorrow at noon. They’ll play either Kentucky or South Carolina. Those two teams are playing each other now and the winner advances.

The top two seeds in the Southland Conference Tournament were eliminated today. UNO defeated second-seeded Southeastern Louisiana seven to four. The Privateers were led by Hezekiah Randolph who homered and drove in three runs.

And Houston Baptist knocked off top-seeded McNeese Five to four. So now we’ll wait to see if both McNeese and Southeastern receive at-large bids. The NCAA unveils the regionals on Monday.

The Ragin Cajuns baseball team begins play in the Soun Belt Tournament tonight when they face Georgia Southern. Because of all of the weather related problems in Georgia, it’s just a single-elimination tournament. Gunner Leger will start for UL Lafayette.

After playing just nine games during his rookie season, Saints defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins says a big goal for him in 2017 is to stay healthy. The former first round pick says if he does play in all 16 games, defensive tackle can be a big strength for this team….
