Tonight at the Thomas Assembly Center, Louisiana Tech puts its four-game winning streak on the line as the Bulldogs host Florida Atlantic. Tech is in second place in the Conference USA standings and they are looking to secure a first round bye in the upcoming league tournament. Tip-off tonight is at 6:30.

The LSU football team has received two verbal commitments today. The first came from former Bastrop star Travez Moore, who is currently at Copiah-Lincoln Community College. He’s six-foot-six, 250 pounds and is listed by 24-7 sports as the second best weakside defensive end in the country. The other verbal pledge came from Plaquemine defensive tackle Nelson Jenkins. He’s six-foot-four , 280 pounds. Both players are three-star prospects.

At the state capitol today, the House Appropriations Committee rejected Governor John Bel Edwards’ plan that would eliminate a 304 million dollar budget deficit. At issue, is a proposal to use 119 million dollars in rainy day funding. GOP lawmakers would rather make more cuts to state spending.

Representative Steve Carter says the additional revenues from the tax could pay for a new Mississippi River bridge and the widening of I-10….

According to finance reports, the governor ended 2016 with $3.2 million on hand. UL-Lafayette political science professor Pearson Cross says it’s an impressive haul for Edwards’ first year.

Despite budget problems, floods and civil unrest from a police shooting, the governor has maintained a high approval rating. Cross says being well liked helps while raising money.

Arbuckle says it took over two hours to get to the helicopter yesterday, but they hope to finish the recovery by later today. He says the helicopter belongs to Terry and Pam Bailey of Center, Texas, which is just across the state line from Desoto Parish.

It’s believed the Baileys were travelling from Shreveport Downtown Airport to Center when the helicopter went down, possibly hitting several trees as there was reportedly a small fire when crews arrived at the scene.

The House Appropriates Committee is meeting again at this hour to work on budget legislation. Speaker Taylor Baras has a proposal that would take fees from certain agencies to put towards the deficit. But Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne calls the measure a cut to agencies and doesn’t see how it could work. The panel advanced the Rainy Day Fund measures on Wednesday.

the Natchez Democrat is reporting that, for the second time since December, the Police chief of Ferriday has been suspended. Mayor Sherrie Jacobs said the discipline of Arthur Lewis without pay for 30 days is related to administrative issues at the Ferriday Police Department. Jacobs had previous suspended Lewis in December after another incident within the department.

A House panel on Wednesday advanced a bill that would use only $74 million from the rainy day fund, instead of the $119 million the governor recommended. The meeting got heated yesterday as Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne argued to Republicans
