House lawmakers return to the floor this afternoon at 1:30 with less than 12 hours to go in the special session. The magic number is $99 million at this point when it comes to rainy day dollars to be used for the $304 million dollar deficit. 70 votes are needed. The special session must end at midnight.

A survey from the National Retail Federation finds many consumers plan to put their tax refunds into savings rather than spend. Denham Springs financial planner Matt Kennedy says we’ve seen this trend over the past eight years ever since the 2008 stock market crash…:

History was made in the Maravich Center last night as the LSU men’s basketball team lost its 14th straight game, which ties a school record. Auburn thumped LSU 98-75 in front of a sparse crowd. The last time LSU lost 14 straight, it was the 1966-67 season. That’s before Pete Maravich suited up.

Last night was a big night for the Southland Conference. UNO rallied back from a six to one deficit to beat fifth ranked LSU 11-to-8. The Tigers middle relievers got lit up. Hunter Kiel gave up four runs in less than inning, Collin Strall gave up another two runs and Russell Reynolds allowed four runs. UNO’s number eight hitter Owen Magee drove in four runs.

McNeese State scored a school-record 32 runs and had 29 hits in a 32-4 win over the ULM Warhawks. Ricky Ramirez set a new school record by scoring six runs as the Cowboys improved to 4-0.

Nicholls won its home opener as the Colonels defeated UL Lafayette three to one. Redshirt senior Mike Hanchar pitched seven standout innings and struck out nine in the victory.

And Southeastern Louisiana scored six runs in the seventh inning to beat Tulane eight to five in Hammond. Second baseman Carson Crites hit a three-run homer to snap a five-five-tie in the seventh inning.

Even though they got off to a competitive start letting the game tie four times late in the first half, the LSU men’s basketball team in the end dropped their 14th straight. It was to Auburn 98-75. That’s a tie for the longest losing streak in the program’s history which was last hit in back-to-back seasons, 1965-66 and 1966-67, half a century ago when Pistol Pete Maravich was a freshman and ineligible back then.

Also in men’s college hoops last night, Tulane dropped a heartbreaker to East Carolina 76-73. The Wave missed a trio of potential game-tying three-pointers in the final eight seconds.

In the NBA, the Pelicans’ newest members, Demarcus Cousins, aka Boogie, and Omri Casspi, who both come to The Big Easy from Sacramento, arrived in New Orleans on Tuesday. They will make their official introductions this morning during a 10:30am news conference, and suit up for the first time tomorrow night when the Rockets come to the Smoothie King Center.

It was an interesting night in college baseball throughout the state. LSU blew a 5 point lead and eventually ended up falling to UNO 11-8 in New Orleans. The Tigers are 3-1 and the Privateers improve to 4-0 on the year. Today LSU will host Hofstra at the Box. UNO hosts Jackson State.

And how bout this one. The McNeese Baseball team shattered the school’s record books with a 32-4 win over ULM in Monroe. It was the home opener for the Warhawks. The Cowboys improve to 4-0 will head to Arizona for a four game series starting tomorrow. The Warhawks continue their host this weekend with a weekend series against Southern Illinois.

SLU exploded for six runs in the 7th inning on Tuesday, rallying to defeat Tulane 8-5 in Hammond.

Nicholls took advantage of some poor pitching by UL-Lafayette in the 7th last night as the Colonels got by the Ragin’ Cajuns 3-1 in Thibodaux.

On the diamond today also is Grambling who plays Oklahoma this afternoon at 3.

It will take a two-thirds vote in the House to approve using money from the Rainy Day Fund, which means 70 yes votes. Some House GOP members say $99 million is too much to take from the state’s savings account and suggest $90 million. Alford says the deadline to reach an agreement is midnight.

Alford says it’s a possibility lawmakers will fail to pass a budget cutting plan by midnight. He says if that happens, the governor could call them back for yet another special session, or the budget shortfall could be resolved in other ways.
