Parts of New Orleans saw widespread flooding over the weekend after downpours overwhelmed the city’s pumping stations, according to officials. They said some neighborhoods saw up to 10 inches of rain in just a few hours on Saturday, which is too much for the 24 pump stations to handle even though they were all operating.

A letter US Senator John Kennedy sent to East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome has sparked an investigation by the legislative auditor’s office. More students are getting their education at home instead of traditional classrooms. According to the state department of education, 26,000 students are home-schooled, while 4,000 more are enrolled in online charter schools. Former LSU stand-out Jalen Collins, a cornerback for the Falcons, has been suspended for 10 games for violating the NFL’s police on PEDs. Collins missed the first four games last season while under suspension for the same reason. Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said in a statement he is extremely disappointed in Collins and decisions going forward will be based on what team leaders feel is best for the team.

Armand “Mondo” Duplantis, a soon-to-be-senior at Lafayette High School, became the youngest athlete to reach the men’s pole vault final at the world championships Sunday in London. The 17-year-old was one of 8 competitors to clear 18 feet, 8 and a quarter inches in the qualification round. Duplantis now has the opportunity to participate in the 12-man final tomorrow.

Former Chicago Bear Jay Cutler has decided to hold off on retiring for a bit as sources indicate the quarterback agreed to terms Sunday with the Dolphins who are looking for a Ryan Tannehill replacement. Cutler’s deal is reportedly worth $10 million dollars for one year.

President Donald Trump has nominated state Judge Terry Doughty of Rayville and Lafayette attorney Michael Juneau as federal judges in the Western District of Louisiana. There are now four vacancies in that district now that Patricia Minaldi retired to seek treatment for alcoholism.

The hurricane forecast team at Colorado State increased their storm prediction total by one and now anticipate 11 named storms for the remainder of the season. State Climatologist Barry Keim says the total number of storms has been increased to 16. He says this isn’t a big change but it still shows conditions are conducive for an active season.

A 20-year-old Alexandria man has been arrested on charges of second degree murder in connection to the fatal shooting a 29-year-old man yesterday. Authorities in Rapides Parish say Desmond Harris was found by police at around 7 p.m. after they responded to the shooting that took place just before 2 p.m. The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

The state Department of Health reminding parents to make sure their kids are up to date on their vaccinations as the new school year approaches. LDH Immunization director Doctor Frank Welch says students entering sixth grade also need a meningitis vaccine. He says kids have to get that shot before they’re exposed to the disease….
