Tonight it’s the Congressional Baseball game and everyone in attendance will have Louisiana Congressman and U.S. House majority whip Steve Scalise in their thoughts. Scalise reportedly had a third surgery today since he was shot in the hip while at a ball field practicing for the game. LSU sent shirts and baseball hats for the players to wear to honor Scalise.

Saints minicamp ended today. Kenny Vaccaro told reporters that he wants to be one of the elite safeties in the league. Coach Sean Payon says he likes that Vaccaro is thinking that way…

A proposed budget for next fiscal year is one step away from final legislative passage, as the spending plan received approval by the Senate Finance committee, one day after House approval. Legislators are debating over whether to allocate 100-million dollars in case there is a revenue shortfall. There’s a chance the special session could end tomorrow as a budget deal is near. The Senate Finance Committee approved the nearly 29-billion dollar spending plan today, one day after the House approved it. So if the full senate passes the budget tomorrow without any changes, it will go the governor for him to sign it.

An extensive criminal justice reform package approved by the legislature is now law as the bills associated with the overhaul were signed by Governor John Bel Edwards today. Edwards says many of these measures were successful in other states when it came to reducing the prison population…

Lawmakers are close to reaching a budget agreement with just five days left in the special session. The House approved a spending plan that appropriates all of the available dollars, something they would not agree to do during the regular session. Jackson Representative Kenny Havard says no one got everything they wanted in this deal.

Cut 6 (07) “a shortfall”

House Republicans originally proposed to withhold more than $200 million to avoid midyear cuts. Houma Representative Tanner Magee says the spending plan isn’t perfect, but it’s probably the best they could do as far as reaching a compromise.

The bill does instruct the administration to hold back $60 million in case of midyear cuts, while appropriating the entire revenue forecast. Havard says no one wants to spend more money than we take in, but they had to come to an agreement.

The bill has the support of Governor John Bel Edwards, and Magee says he expects the Senate to approve it as well. He says he is cautiously optimistic lawmakers are moving in the right direction. He says it’s a relief they’re close to reaching an agreement.

The full Senate could pass the House approved budget on Friday.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise remains in critical condition, according to MedStar Washington Hospital. President Donald Trump says this has been more difficult for the Jefferson Parish Congressman than originally thought. He says Scalise is in some trouble, but he’s a fighter.

The hospital says the gunshot wound to his left hip fractured bones, injured internal organs, and caused severe bleeding. MedStar confirmed the bullet traversed the pelvis, and LSU Health New Orleans trauma surgeon Dr. John Hunt says that could pose some problems.

Scalise reportedly underwent a third surgery today. One of the procedures was necessary to stop the bleeding, as the hospital says Scalise was in shock. Hunt says what that means is the patient lost a lot of blood.

MedStar tweets that Scalise will need more operations. Hunt says it’s not uncommon for gunshot wounds impacting the stomach to result in multiple surgeries. He says typically patients will undergo one procedure at the beginning and then come back for more.

President Donald Trump says wounded Congressman Steve Scalise of Louisiana is in trouble, but hopefully will be okay. The No. 3 GOP leader from Jefferson Parish is in critical condition after being shot in the hip. One of his procedures since was necessary to stop the bleeding, according to the hospital. LSU Health New Orleans trauma surgeon Dr. John Hunt says what that means is the patient lost a lot of blood…:

The Advocate is reporting that doctors are still trying to locate the bullet.

State Police say a trooper is under arrest for allegedly using excessive force when taking someone into custody in New Orleans. They say Trooper John Neal is accused of kicking the suspect and bashing his head into a window while the suspect was handcuffed. Neal has been on forced leave since the February incident and is booked with on one count of simple battery.

The Senate Finance Committee approved the budget plan passed by the House on Wednesday, leaving the full Senate left to vote on it. The proposed $28 billion-plus operating budget will be reviewed by the Upper Chamber on Friday morning. Lawmakers have until Monday to pass a budget without forcing another special session.

The Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team had four players selected on the final day of the 2017 MLB Draft on Wednesday. Junior left-hander Gunner Leger was picked by the Miami Marlins, but he’s decided to return for his senior season.

LSU junior right-handers Hunter Kiel and Doug Norman were selected in the MLB draft Wednesday. Kiel by the Chicago White Sox, Norman was chosen by the Cincinnati Reds.

Former ULM baseball player Nathan Reynolds was selected by Arizona in the MLB draft.

The Diamondbacks also selected Nicholls State University pitcher Cole Stapler Wednesday.

Louisiana Tech left fielder Raphael Gladu was taken by the New York Mets, and the Colorado Rockies drafted Nate Harris.

It’s the final day of the Saints mini-camp. Starting center Max Unger is in a walking boot after undergoing surgery. Unger hopes to be ready for the regular season opener. Wide receiver Willie Snead hopes to sign a long term deal before the season starts. Defensive tackle Tony McDaniel was brought in for a tryout as the Saints are not sure about the future of Nick Fairley. McDaniel is 32 year and has played 11 seasons in the NFL.
