Around one o’ clock today, hundreds of LSU students gathered on the parade grounds to watch the peak of the Great American Eclipse. The last time the majority of the sun was eclipsed by the moon in the U.S. was 1979. Sean Mahoney, a sophomore majoring in Mechanical Engineering, says he waited for hours in line to receive a pair of protective glasses.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Metairie is telling his colleagues that he will wait until his doctors give him the okay, before he returns to the Capitol. A spokesperson for the Republican lawmaker says Scalise was on a conference call with GOP legislators today to discuss spending bills. Scalise was shot in June in the hip and is undergoing inpatient rehabilitation, after undergoing several surgeries.

The department of children and family services has collected more than half a million dollars in child support payments through MoneyGram so far this year. Child Support Enforcement Director Lydia Scales says it’s made it easier for noncustodial parents who are unbanked to pay their child support, because they can now make payments in cash.

Minden Police arrest a 25-year-old for allegedly taking a two-month old child from his home and leaving him underneath an I-20 overpass. Authorities are still trying to determine why 25-year-old Kyshaun Wilson kidnapped the toddler and left the infant under a bridge. Wilson is friends with the people who lived at the home taking care of the baby. Wilson reportedly told a homeless person he left a child under a bridge in Minden and the child was found sleeping under the Sibley exit.

Louisianians are getting a view of the eclipse right now, and spectators throughout the country were able to see it streamed live thanks to the help of some LSU students. A NASA based program, with the help of LSU, broadcast the historic event with a high-altitude balloon. The 2017 Tigers will begin the season at No. 13 in the Associated Press Top 25. LSU’s November opponent, Alabama, is No. 1, followed by Ohio State, Florida State, USC and Clemson.

There were no winners of Saturday night’s Powerball jackpot drawing, and the big prize now goes to $650 million dollars. The cash value of the Wednesday jackpot is $411.7 million.

It’s eclipse time. Citizens from across the US are gazing at the sky today as, and in Louisiana we’re seeing about 80% of the sun blocked. That’s according to LSU astronomy professor Michael Cherry says who says the best time for us will be between 1 and 2 p.m…:

He says the total eclipse is visible in a path about 70 miles wide from Oregon to South Carolina.
