The 14th annual Louisiana Book Festival takes place tomorrow in Baton Rouge. The event brings in about 30-thousand people to the State Library and State Capital. Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser expects a great crowd as the weather is predicted to stay nice and cool. He says the festival is free and there is food and music along with great books…:

The man who plowed his pickup truck into a crowd of spectators at the Endymion parade last February has pleaded guilty. Neilson Rizzuto is convicted on 11 felony counts of vehicular negligent injuring and will be sentenced on January 12th. Authorities say Rizzuto’s blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit the night of the crash.

Getting people who drive trucks to buckle up is still a problem in Louisiana. That’s according to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission. Executive Director Katara Williams says the seat belt usage rate has consistently increased annually in the Bayou State since 2009, with about 89% of drivers of cars buckling up, but only 82% of those in trucks:

Alexandria and Baton Rouge drivers and passengers had the lowest rates when it comes to wearing seat belts.

Tomorrow is National Prescription Drug Take Back day. A recent American Medical Association study revealed 42 percent of prescribed medicine for post surgical pain was not used, and 67 percent of patients had leftover medicine. State Police spokesman Bryan Lee says these drugs are commonly taken from people they know…:

It’s homecoming weekend at Grambling State University, and security will be beefed up for the game in the wake of the double murder that happened this week on campus. An arrest has been made in that case, but school officials want to take precautions to ensure everyone is safe.

Southeastern Louisiana hosts one of the top teams on the FCS level this Saturday in Strawberry Stadium. The Bearkcats are ranked fifth in the coaches poll and are averaging 45 points a game. An arrest has been made in the case of the double murder on the campus of Grambling State University this week. The Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office says they’ve booked a freshman student, 19-year-old Jaylin Wayne, on murder charges in the deaths of Earl Andrews and Monquiarious Caldwell, both 23. It’s been a somber week at GSU which was supposed to be a homecoming celebration. Students are holding a peace walk today instead of a pep rally.

An arrest has been made in the shooting death at Grambling State University this week.  Jaylin Wayne is charged with first degree murder in the alleged shooting deaths of 23-year-olds Earl Andrews and Monquiarious Caldwell.  Wayne turned himself in last night after learning he was wanted.  The shooting happened outside some dorm rooms following a disagreement.

President Trump calls the opioid crisis a “national shame” and “human tragedy” and he intends to do something about it.  By creating a public health emergency, it will allow for the prescribing of medicine commonly used to treat substance abuse.  Chief of Staff for the state department of health Andrew Tuozzlo says there is a nasal spray that is an effective and valuable tool for someone who has overdosed…

An arrest has been made in the double homicide which occurred on the campus of Grambling State University this week. Authorities say Jaylin Wayne faces first degree murder charges. Earl Andrews and Monquiarious Caldwell, both 23, were killed in the courtyard of dorm rooms at GSU early Wednesday. Wayne, a freshman at the university reportedly surrendered to law enforcement after learning a warrant had been issued for his arrest. It’s homecoming week at Grambling, and students have decided to hold a peace walk today, instead of a pep rally.

The CDC reports Louisiana is one of 20 states with a significant increase in opioid deaths — 478 fatal drug overdoses in 2014. Firefighters say the flames raged for 30 minutes before coming under control, then the toddler was found during a search of the home.
