Congressman Ralph Abraham says he has received assurances from Governor Edwards to keep the LSU Health Medical School in Shreveport open.  Edwards says his administration has worked for more than a year to provide quality medical care to northwest Louisiana, and they are looking to improve the access to health care in the region.  LSU officials and hospital representatives are negotiating with Ochsner (oxner) Health System to take over as hospital manager.

The embattled National Flood Insurance Program is set to expire on Friday if Congress doesn’t take some sort of action. Congressman Clay Higgins hopes they will be able to come up with something to give home owners information on flood-insurance coverage and rates. Central and southern Louisiana are in store for heavy rains over the next couple of days.  An arctic cold front moved in yesterday plummeting temperatures and bringing a lot of moisture.  Phil Grigsby with the National Weather Service says the strong winds will drop the wind chill to near freezing…

As the cold air continues making a push south, Grigsby says some people may see a wintry mix Thursday night into Friday morning…

The weekend will be clear, but Grigsby says you still will need warm clothing if you’re heading out during this extended cold period…

A new study from the University Council on Gender Equity finds that LSU male professors make significantly more than female professors, in some cases a difference of 20 to 30 thousand dollars a year. Assistant Accounting Professor Christine Cheng says these numbers are preliminary but noteworthy.

A spokesman for LSU says the data used in the report is missing variables such as some salary offers being based on experience, education and other market factors. Cheng says additional research needs to be done where outside factors are considered but these numbers are correct.

The report took the total wages and calculated the average monthly pay of professors. Cheng says there are many factors that go into each teacher’s salary, but it’s alarming that a male professor could make 20-thousand dollars more than a female doing the same job. She says they plan to dive deeper into these numbers.

The House has already passed a five-year re-authorization of the NFIP, but the Senate is very wrapped up in dealing with the tax reform legislation right now. Congressman Clay Higgins predicts there will be a brief extension to buy some time..:

Louisiana’s Medicaid program is spending at a slower pace than expected.  The forecast shows they may spend as much as 650-million-dollars less, which could give the program a surplus in six months.  30-million-dollars of that money would go to a state general fund surplus that could be spent elsewhere in state government…

The Advocate is reporting that LSU’s coaching staff will get a combined $115,000 in bowl bonuses.

The Advocate is reporting that LSU’s coaching staff will get a combined $115,000 in bowl bonuses. Coach O will get an extra 25 grand for leading the team to the Citrus Bowl on New Years Day. Position Assistants getting 10 grand and coordinators earning 15. The bonuses are subject to approval by the LSU Board of Supervisors at its annual fall meeting Friday.

With the end of the season looming, talk of juniors who won’t return to LSU is heating up. Tiger running back Derrius Guice, widely considered to be a first round draft pick in 2018, said he’s not going to make a decision on whether or not to come back to LSU until after the bowl game. Tiger Rag Associate Editor James Moran says Arden Key is another player likely to leave LSU and be picked in the first round. He says also expected to go pro are cornerbacks Donte Jackson and Kevin Toliver…:

ULM will be looking for some new quarterbacks as they’ve lost their second and third string play callers on the same day. Garrett Smith is leaving Monroe, after losing the starting QB job to Caleb Evans. Smith is now looking to transfer to another school. Shortly after Smith’s announcement, third string QB Will Collins also said he’d be leaving ULM. He didn’t play at all this season.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that Falcons Coach Dan Quinn is appealing to fans to be in their seats for the Saints game tomorrow night, instead of “using the coasters.” The Dirty Birds new home, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, features clubs suites and other amenities that may be keeping fans from being 100% focused on the game. Quinn said when the Saints come to town, they need fans to make it as loud as they can.

KLFY in Acadiana is reporting that those in the running to replace outgoing Ragin Cajuns Head Coach Mark Hudspeth include LSU Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada, former Florida OC Doug Nussmeier and Penn State Defensive Coordinator Brent Pry.

Meanwhile things will start to dry out in North Louisiana by tomorrow, and temperatures are expected to be in the low 50s for the afternoon.

Authorities say a man has died after driving his car into Lake Pontchartrain. His passenger survived after a rescue, but one of the rescuers disappeared during the rescue. The Coast Guard search for the missing good Samaritan continues as best it can in the rain and wind. The vehicle was in the parking lot of the Blue Crab Restaurant New Orleans when it accelerated into the lake and patrons jumped in to try to save the occupants. The missing man is identified as an employee at the Blue Crab.

Secretary of State Tom Schedler says it’s time to replace Louisiana’s voting machines. Schedler says tampering with the current machines is remote, but a new system would further decrease chances. He says if approved by the state Division of Administration, the new touch screen system would provide better confirmation for voters.

A cold front has crossed Louisiana bringing the Bayou State the coldest weather of the season. State Climatologist Barry Keim says by Friday and over the weekend, we’ll see temperatures in the 30s in the morning with afternoon highs in the 50s. He says there’s also a chance for a light freeze across northern parishes.

Keim says even as the front moves offshore, clouds and rain will stay in the forecast.

Secretary of State Tom Schedler says he is seeking to replace voting machines, and maybe the way we vote. He says an option they are exploring is a way to let voters cast ballots in their precinct, even if they are in another part of the state. He explains how it would work in his case, since he is a registered voter in another parish, but lives in Baton Rouge..:

Louisiana’s new state treasurer John Schroder was sworn into office Tuesday evening. The Republican fills the remaining two years of the term vacated by John Kennedy, who left the job after winning election to the U.S. Senate.
