Deaf students have filed a discrimination suit against the Louisiana community college System, alleging they struggled in school because they couldn’t get interpreters and other accommodations for their disability. The Causeway headed into New Orleans was closed by crews after a truck flew off the bridge overnight into Lake Pontchartrain. Officials say the Coast Guard, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s deputies and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office are searching with a boat and helicopter, but have thus far only been able to recover the truck, not the driver. More on this as it develops.

Some good news on the unemployment front.  Louisiana’s unemployment rate dropped to 4.6 percent in December.  It’s been nearly ten years since the rate was that low.  It’s a one-point-four-percent decrease from December 2016.  The biggest job gains came in construction, manufacturing, leisure and hospitality and education and health services.

“Feed Your Soul” is the new brand Louisiana will use to promote tourism.  Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser says they’re taking the slogan on the road in Atlanta, Houston, Dallas and Washington D.C. on Mardi Gras Day Feb. 13th

The new slogan replaces Pick Your Passion the state has used for the last seven years.

It’s been five years since New Orleans last hosted a Super Bowl.  Since then, the city has put in attractive bids to host the game for 2018 and 19, but lost to Minneapolis and Atlanta, with their new stadiums.  President and CEO of the New Orleans Sports Foundation Jay Cicero says they’re not sure what the NFL will be looking for when they ask for bids for Super Bowl 57 in 2023…

Reaction to Governor John Bel Edwards’ worst-case budget proposal is rolling in. The Administration presented a plan to lawmakers showing deep cuts in order to fill a one billion dollar shortfall coming this summer as a one-cent sales tax falls off the books. Edwards suggested the plan is what would happen if lawmakers don’t increase tax revenues. State Treasurer John Schroder says before Louisiana raises anymore taxes on the public, it should show exactly how its spending money…:

Schroder says Louisiana needs to get its spending under control, but recognizes it won’t be easy to do.

A thirty-three-year-old Livingston Parish teacher was arrested Monday and charged with three counts of carnal knowledge of a juvenile. Ashley Meyer is an Albany High School teacher, and has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.

Louisiana’s new tourism slogan is Feed Your Soul. Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser says they found that in this state, you’re always in the moment, which is why they chose that one…:

The governor made clear that the proposal was not one he wanted to present if lawmakers couldn’t come to an agreement on how to avoid the fiscal cliff.

The wife of former US Senator David Vitter, Wendy Vitter, was formally nominated by President Donald Trump to be a federal judge in New Orleans. Mrs. Vitter will need the US Senate’s approval to take the bench, and if confirmed, she will be a judge on the U.S. District Court for the state’s Eastern District.

The LSU men’s basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak in SEC play following a 77-65 win over Texas A&M inside the PMAC last night. Duop Reath finished with 21 points and 8 rebounds, while Tremont Waters added 15. The Tigers led by 19 points in the second half. The Aggies pulled within 10, but Waters was able to drain a shot from deep with 2:20 left to secure the win.

The LHSAA Annual Convention convenes today and on Friday, high school principals will vote on a number of proposals. A vote will NOT be taken on whether to end the split playoff in football. But North Vermilion Principal Tommy Byler has a proposal to even up the number of schools that play each classification in an effort to prevent one or two win teams from making the playoffs on the non-select side…:

ULM has hired former Ouachita High head coach John Carr as the Warhawks wide receivers coach. Carr spent the past two seasons as offensive coordinator at Jones County Community College in Mississippi. In 2017, Jones County went 8-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Carr also gained experience at three other high schools in north Louisiana in addition to Ouachita, including Neville, West Monroe and West Ouachita.

New Orleans put in attractive bids to host the Super Bowls in 2018 and 2019, but lost to Minneapolis and Atlanta, who have new stadiums.  Cicero says they’re not sure what the NFL will be looking for when they ask for bids for the Super Bowl in 2023.

Generally, teams who have either built a new stadium, or moved to a new city will get offered the game strait up, without having to bid against other teams.

They are building a new stadium in Las Vegas, which will make them an attractive host city for the Super Bowl. Cicero says since a lot of the new stadiums have hosted Super Bowls he hopes New Orleans will get to land one after 2022.

The governor presented a doomsday budget that includes an 80 percent cut in funding for TOPS. On top of TOPS, The higher education budget included an additional 26-million dollar cut. Higher Ed dodged budget cuts last year, and President of the University of Louisiana System Dr. Jim Hendersonsays it had a big impact…

Henderson says cutting TOPS would be a betrayal of hard working students.

Congressman Clay Higgins is aiming to pass a bill that would bolster existing immigration laws. The St. Landry Parish Republican says the Obama Administration created a bureaucratic situation that is keeping the Trump Administration from hiring more boarder guards.

Higgins would like 10,000 more boarder agents.

The recent cold snap could cause the strawberry crop to be pushed back a couple of weeks.  There are nine to 12 commercial growers in Tangipahoa Parish.   Whitney Wallace from the LSU Ag Center says those farmers took extra precautions during the brutally cold weather and expects the crop should come through just fine…

Tonight at 8 PM, the LSU men’s basketball team will look to snap its three-game losing streak as they host Texas A-and-M. The Tigers leading scorer, freshman Tremont Waters, has struggled in SEC play as he’s failed to score in double figures in three of the last four games. Coach Will Wade says he’s going through some adversity and this is a learning process for him…

Wade is also looking for more consistent play from several other players as well, including Brandon Sampson and Daryl Edwards.

After winning in double overtime over the Chicago Bulls last night, the Pelicans are off today. They’ll be in Charlotte tomorrow night. New Orleans has won five of its last six.

Philadelphia’s Eagles Doug Pederson is the first person with ties to Louisiana to be a head coach in a Super Bowl. He coached at Calvary Baptist in Shreveport and also is a former ULM quarterback. Ex-Calvary Baptist assistant coach Terry Slack says Pederson’s faith is a driving force in his personal and professional life…

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reports Maryland has hired Matt Canada as its offensive coordinator. Canada recently left LSU and as part of the separation, he’ll get one-point-seven million dollars to coach somewhere else.

Louisiana Tech released its football schedule for next season. The Bulldogs open the year at South Alabama and the home opener is the next week against Southern. Tech will travel to LSU on September 22nd and open Conference USA play by visiting North Texas on September 29th.
