46 percent of LSU Health New Orleans graduating medical students participating in the National Resident Match Program this year chose to remain in Louisiana. That is down from 49 percent staying in state last year and 64-percent in 2012. Dr. Steve Nelson says it’s a trend that could cost Louisiana some great doctors…

Louisiana is two million dollars short on its funding for voucher students this year. The money is appropriated every June, and covers the cost of state students to attend charter and private schools, instead of public schools. Department of Education spokesperson Sydni Dunn says the state is short this year, and if more money isn’t appropriated next year, could be short by an even wider margin.

Despite talk of budget cuts to public colleges and TOPS, a record 23-thousand students have applied for entry at LSU for the academic year that starts in August. The school’s chief enrollment officer, Jose Aviles, says they  hope for an incoming freshman class of 58-hundred, but TOPS funding is a factor…

A 13-hit attack by the LSU Tigers helped them defeat Missouri 7-5 to clinch the series on Sunday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium. The top two hitters in LSU’s lineup, Zach Watson and Brandt Broussard, each had three hits. Watson drove in two runs and scored twice, while Broussard had an RBI and a run scored. Ma’Khail Hilliard pitched six solid innings for his fifth win of the year.

In other action over the weekend, Louisiana Tech swept a series from Rice that ended on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep over Rice. The Bulldogs have won nine of their last 12 meetings with the Owls. And senior shortstop Dalton Skelton has a 13-game hitting streak. And Grambling took two of three from Southern.

ULM, UL-Lafayette and Tulane all lost series this past weekend. McNeese State swept Stephen F Austin. The Cowboys beat the Lumberjacks 5-1 for the their sixth win in a row on Sunday. Southeastern Louisiana has a five game winning streak after sweeping Lamar.

After getting shot down by the Rockets on Saturday night, the Pelicans responded with a 108-89 win over the Boston Celtics last night in the Smoothie King Center. Anthony Davis led the way with 34 points and 11 rebounds. Check Diallo (De-al-OH) had a season-high 17 and Nikola Mirotic ( (Knee-cola) Mear-uh-tich) poured in 16 points. Before the game, it was announced head coach Alvin Gentry was fined 15-thousand dollars for his criticism of the refs following the loss to Houston. The Pels host Dallas on Tuesday the first of three consecutive games.

LSU faces Utah tonight in the second round of the NIT. The Utes are 20-11 on the season and Tigers Coach Will Wade says they are very good on the defensive end of the floor…

A report from America’s Health Ranking says the rates of maternal mortality and teen suicide have risen over the last two years in Louisiana. UnitedHealthcare Chief Medical Officer Dr. Mark Peters says we are one of the worst states when it comes to taking care of expecting mothers.

Cut 4  (12) “other states.” 

The maternal mortality rate increased 28 percent to 44.8 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2017, while the infant mortality was down 11 percent.  Teen suicides were also up seven percent. Peters says mental health is a nationwide issue that Louisiana in particular lags behind on.

Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, and West Virginia made up the five lowest ranked states. Peters says they all have something in common, low state healthcare funding.

Cut 6 (11) “state programs.”

The good news is that the uninsured rate for women 18-40 was down 34 percent. Peters attributes this to the Medicaid expansion in 2016.

National studies find a high number of physicians set up their permanent practices in areas where they complete their residency program. Nelson says a decline of 18 percent in the last five years is a concern and it’s up to the legislature to provide a stable source of funding for higher ed…

Nelson says the future medical achievements and the new physicians that will fill our hospitals and medical practices come from Louisiana, not elsewhere…

Dunn says if the legislature doesn’t come up with another two-million dollars to fill the shortfall for this academic year, schools that are educating voucher students would be on the hook to pay for their educational expenses.

The state’s voucher program is paid for by a special line-item appropriation in the budget. It currently enrolls 6,600 students statewide. Dunn says it’s possible money that funds public schools may have to be redirected to cover some of the costs of the voucher program for next school year.

The Tiger Excellence Award is for nonresident students who have ACT scores of 28 or 29 and then there’s the Transformation Merit Scholarship. Aviles says that’s for students who have a 26 or 27 ACT and those are students most universities are trying to attract….

LSU freshman right-hander Ma’Khail Hilliard gave up his first two runs of the season in the first inning, but that was it, as Hilliard pitched six solid innings to help the Fighting Tigers beat Missouri 7-5 in the rubber match of the three-game series. Mainieri is impressed with how Hilliard was able to bounce back….

LSU had 13 hits on Sunday.  But they had a couple of runners thrown out on the base paths and made two errors in the field. Mainieri says it’s nice to take the series, but they have to play better to win on the road at Vanderbilt next weekend…

Tom Benson’s will has been filed in Orleans Parish Civil Court and the billionaire made it clear that his daughter and grandchildren will not get a penny from him. The document was signed in July 2015, shortly after a judge found him mentally competent to handle his own affirs. Meanwhile, the Saints and Pelicans say ownership of the teams will be a smooth transition to Mr. Benson’s wife Gayle.

Details of Tom Benson’s last will are coming out. According to the Advocate newspaper, Benson made it clear in 2015 that his daughter or grandchildren would never receive another penny from him. Mr. Benson has also left all of his property to a trust and he also made it clear that he wanted his wife, Gayle, to run both the Pelicans and the Saints.

West Baton Rouge elementary school teacher Melissa Blank will not face charges after she was accused of roughing up a female student who was misbehaving and then prevented the rest of the class from leaving her classroom. Assistant District Attorney Tony Clayton says after investigating what happened on February seventh, it didn’t rise to criminal misconduct. Her attorneys Beau Brock and Yigal Bander say their client is pleased with the D-A’s decision.

The Storm Predicition Center says there’s a slight chance for severe weather across north Louisiana tomorrow. There’s a marginal risk for severe weather for northwest Louisiana today.

A settlement has been reached in a lawsuit filed by the family of Victor White against Iberia Sheriff Louis Ackal and a deputy. White was fatally shot when handcuffed inside a patrol car in 2014. The coroner ruled it a suicide, White’s family disagreed. Terms of the settlement are not known.

Representative Robert Johnson’s proposal is backed by Attorney Generals across the country. Johnson says businesses shouldn’t have the ability to dictate how victims respond to abuse.

Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis told W-W-L Radio the ownership transition from Tom Benson to Gayle Benson will be a smooth one and the organiziation will remain stable. Loomis says Mrs. Benson has been involved pretty much from the day she and Mr. Benson got marrried.

Gayle Benson has released a statement saying she’s heartbroken over the passing of her husband. She says the Saints and Pelicans organiziations will move forward successfully together.

Details of Mr. Benson’s will have become public. It makes it clear that his wife shall run the professional sports franchsies. And that his daugther and her grandchildren do not get a single penny from him. It’s still unclear if a legal challenge is coming. His estranged former heirs argued Mr. Benson was not mentally fit to make these type of decisions late in his life.

The Pelicans play their first home game tonight since the passing away of Mr. Benson. They take on the Houston Rockets in the first game of a stretch of five games in six days.

The LSU baseball team won its SEC opener last night as the Tigers defeated Missouri four to two. Zack Hess got the win to run his record to 3-2. He struck out eight and allowed just two runs on three hits. But he walked five, including three in a row in the seventh. Austin Bain earned the save and Beau Jordan homered, while Zach Watson drove in two runs.

Louisiana Tech trounced Rice 8-2 and the two teams will play a doubleheader today. Georgia Southern doubled up the Ragin Cajuns six to three. Grambling outslugged Southern 10-6. Nicholls won in extra innings 5-4 over Houston Baptist, Southeastern Louisiana defeated Lamar 6-4, McNeese beat Stephen F- Austin seven to five. Tulane and UNO both lost.

Former LSU star Tyrann Mathieu has signed a one-year contract with the Houston Texans. The Saints have agreed to a five-year contract extension with punter Thomas Morstead. And the Black and Gold have reportedly reupped with pass rusher Alex Okafor for two more years.

The proposal by Representative Robert Johnson is part of a nationwide effort, Johnson says victims stand a better chance to reach a favorable conclusion if they seek litigation for sexual harassment claims instead of potentially more company friendly options. He says when human dignity is on the line, a judge needs to be called.

Arbuckle says he’s accomplished much in his tenure as sheriff. He started with only 75 employees and about a half million dollar surplus…

Mr. B’s widow, Gayle Benson, is the new owner of the Saints and Pelicans. She released a statement saying she’s heartbroken but thankful for the fans devotion to their teams and city. She also said she’s surrounded by wonderful leadership and they’ll move forward successfully together.

The Saints have signed pass rusher Alex Okafor to a two-year, 10-million dollar contract. He recorded 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles, before injuring his achilles in week 11 and missing the rest of the season.

SEC play begins tonight weather permitting for the 16th ranked LSU Tigers who host Missouri. Zack Hess will start on the mound for the Bayou Bengals, while Missouri will counter with six-foot-seven right-hander Bryce Montes De Oca. Coach Paul Mainieri says he’s one of the best pitchers in college baseball…

In the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, Arkansas becomes the first SEC team to be eliminated. The seventh seeded Razorbacks lost to Butler 77-62. Seventh-seeded Texas a-and-M advanced with an 73-69 win over Providence. Former North Caddo star Robert Williams had 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Aggies.
