Two law enforcement officers and the suspect are injured in a shooting in Tangipahoa Parish early this morning. State Police Trooper Shelby Mayfield says while the extent of the injuries required the officers to be admitted into the hospital, they are expected to recover.

Deputy Superintendent of Education, Jenna Chaisson says this shows that the young students are ready to learn.

Third graders showed the most growth, improving by five points. Second grade increased by four points, first grade by 2 and kindergarten by 1 point. Chaisson says this is the third year, the Department of Education has administered a statewide literacy screener.

Chaisson is pleased with the steady progress of young students over the last five to six years. She credits policy shifts and dedicated educators.

In Tangipahoa Parish an overnight traffic stop escalated into a shooting where an Independence police officer was shot. Authorities say during the initial stop around 3;00 AM, a Tangipahoa Parish deputy was threatened with a gun and a chase began. During the second stop the suspect allegedly fired multiple shots and struck an Independence police officer in the leg. The suspect then ran into the woods, stole a car, and fled to Amite. The suspect who has not been identified was later arrested. The injured officer was treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

A five-year-old Slidell boy is killed, and his grandmother is charged in his death. Police chief Daniel Seuzeneau says the boy was sitting in front of 55-year-old Kristen Anders’ SUV yesterday morning when Anders got in and pulled out of the driveway, not realizing the boy was in front of the vehicle.

Anders ran over the boy and killed him instantly. Tests showed that Anders was under the influence of alcohol and nervous system suppressants.
