An LSU Pennington Biomedical Research Center study finds obese children can see improved health by playing video games that require physical activity. Participants in the study completed three one-hour gaming sessions each week and had a fitness coach. Lead researcher Amanda Staiano says after six months the overweight kids reduced their body mass index by about three-percent and their cholesterol by seven percentiles.

A congressional candidate was arrested shortly after he qualified to run agaisnt US Representative Ralph Abraham in Louisiana’s 5th district. Billy Burkette of Pride was taken away in handcuffs as there was a warrant out for his arrest for impersonating a law enforcement officer. Burkette told reporters at the Secretary of State’s office in Baton Rouge that he’s the chief of police and chairman of the Louisiana Band of Choctaw Indians.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is mourning the death of one of its cadets. LDWF spokesperson Adam Einck says 38-year-old Immanuel Washington of Youngsville collapsed following a 2.5 mile run as part of physical training.

Nine people have signed up for the Secretary of State’s race, including interim Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin, who had said for months he would not seek the position. The Baton Rouge Republican said he changed his mind ten minutes before qualifying ended on Friday afternoon.

There are four other major candidates in the race . Former republican state legislator A.G. Crowe and Democrat Renee Fonentot Free, who works in the A-G’s office.

Also two current state lawmakers are in the field for the November 6th election…

A cadet with LDWF has died at Ochsner Medical Center in Baton Rouge, a day after being rushed to the facility.  LDWF spokesperson Adam Einck says 38-year-old Immanuel Washington of Youngsville collapsed following a 2.5 mile run as part of physical training.  Einck says Washington had vital signs when EMTs arrived.

Einck says Washington, who is a former Youngsville police officer, had been training to be an LDWF enforcement officer for a little less than a month.  Washington leaves behind a wife and two small children.

LSU is picked to finish fifth in the SEC West, according to journalists who attended the SEC Football Media Days. Alabama is once again the favorite in the West followed by Auburn, Mississippi State and Texas A-and-M. Tiger Rag Associate Editor James Moran says fifth place is even lower than he projected….

It’s the lowest LSU has been picked since the 1990s. Moran says LSU’s difficult schedule is contributing the low expectations…
