It was an emotional night in the Mercedes Benz Superdome last night as the Saints Drew Brees became the NFL’s all-time passing yards leader. He surpassed Peyton Manning’s record on a 62-yard touchdown pass. Once he broke the record late in the first half in a 43-19 rout of Washington, Brees also thought about the people who are no longer here to see him reach this milestone.

Brees passed both Brett Farve and Manning last night.

The win also improves New Orleans record to 4-1 heading into the bye week. The Saints next game is October 21st in Baltimore against the Ravens. Brees is 0-4 all-time against the Ravens. It’s the one franchise he’s yet to beat. Kick-off for that game is at 3:05.

Despite the loss to Florida, 13th ranked LSU is still in position to win the SEC. The road is not easy as they have top ranked Alabama coming up on the schedule and this Saturday the Tigers host 2nd ranked Georgia. Coach Ed Orgeron says they can’t afford to look too far ahead…

Both McNeese and Nicholls moved up one spot in the F-C-S Coaches poll. The 5-and-1 Cowboys are ranked 9th, while the 4-and-2 Colonels are ranked 11th. Nicholls is at Abilene Christian for a 2:30 kick off on Saturday, while McNeese has the week off.

One of ULM’s top receivers, Xavier Brown, will miss the rest of the season because of a shoulder injury. He will be able to redshirt, because he only played in four games this season.

Life-threatening storm surge is expected on the Florida coast as Hurricane Michael continues to churn towards the panhandle. It currently has maximum sustained winds of 110-miles per hour and more strengthening is expected.

A mother in her 20s and her one-year-old child were struck by bullets in what Shreveport police are calling a drive-by shooting. Authorities say the two victims sustained non-life threatening injuries. Shreveport Police Corporal Angie Willhite says detectives began collecting evidence early this morning…

Willhite says they hope a nearby resident saw something to help provide a description of the vehicle used by the shooter.

A UL-Lafayette professor has been given a 250,000 dollar grant to take an in depth look at how south central Louisiana seafood makes it from the water to your dinner plate. Dr. Geoffrey Stewart got the grant from the US Department of Agriculture. Stewart says he’s looking to better understand that supply chain, and look for ways to improve its efficiency.

Shreveport police say they are looking for the person responsible for a drive-by shooting into a home early this morning, wounding a woman in her 20s and her one-year-old child. Both were shot in the leg and both are expected to survive their injuries. Corporal Angie Willhite says they need the public’s help in solving this crime…

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries would like to use some of the money the state has received from BP as result of the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill to improve Queen Bess Island in Barataria Bay. It’s a key nesting location for the brown pelican. Coastal resource scientist manager Todd Baker says they want to build up the island so it’s at least two thirds of it are above the tidal range…

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is hoping to get approval to use some BP cash to rebuild the brown pelican habitat on Queen Bess Island. It’s home to the site of the first effort to reintroduce pelicans to the Pelican State in 1968. Coastal Resource Scientist Manager Todd Baker says the crucial habitat has taken a beating over the last 50 years.

18-year-old Mason Andrews of Monroe is now the youngest person to ever circumnavigate the globe in an airplane after returning home over the weekend from a journey around the world that began July 22nd. Andrews says the adventure was taxing at times, and that the scariest part of his journey was over Saudi Arabia, where he had to be locked in during a dangerous bout of weather for nearly half a day.

The Saints also won routing Washington 43-19. Brees threw three touchdown passes two of them to Tre’Quan Smith. Mark Ingram returned from his four-game suspension and scored the first touchdown of the game on a two-yard run. He rushed for 53 yards on 16 carries.

 

Second-year cornerback Marshon Lattimore left the game with a concussion. It’s the second concussion he’s suffered in his career. He’ll have a chance to rest, as the Saints have a bye week coming up and they’ll play again on October 21st against the Baltimore Ravens.

 

After losing to Florida on Saturday, LSU quarterback Joe Burrow says they have no time to sulk, because second ranked Georgia will be in Tiger Stadium on Saturday. LSU is going through its toughest part of the schedule, but Burrow says he’s up to the challenge…

Has Grambling State fixed its issues on offense? After scoring just 40 points in three losses, the Tigers erupted for 62 in a blowout win over Oklahoma Panhandle State. Sophomore quarterback Geremy Hickbottom was named SWAC Offensive Player of the week. The Mobile native threw for a career-high 297 yards and three touchdowns. Grambling is at Texas Southern this Saturday.

A 20 year old woman and her one year old child are recovering after they were shot in their home at around 3:30 this morning. Investigators say a car stopped in front of the home and someone started shooting. Cpl. Angie Willhite with the Shreveport Police Department says initially the injuries to the child appeared to be life threatening.

Several Secretary of State Candidates got combative yesterday after they were asked about controversy surrounding the bidding process for the state’s new voting machines. Candidate and Kenner Representative Julie Stokes says she’s incredibly concerned about the surprising, new price tag for the machines, numbers that were much higher than initially estimated.

A new study shows the divorce rate dropped by 18 percent between 2008 and 2016.  Researchers say this is likely because millennials are waiting to get married later.  Director of Tulane University’s Social Work Program, Parker Sternbergh says millennials are approaching marriage differently than previous generations.
