Baton Rouge police have had a breakthrough in a nearly two-decade olf murder case.  Jeff Palermo has the story.

There’s been a slight decline in the composite average ACT score among Louisiana students. Last year the composite average was 19.5, but this year it is 19.2, which ranks 45th in the country. The U-S average is also down. Louisiana is one of 17 states that require high school seniors to take the college readiness test.

 

Baton Rouge Congressman Garret Graves has started a GoFundMe to cover the 100,000 dollar fine the SEC slapped LSU, after fans stormed the field following the Tigers upset win over Georgia. The account has raised over 15,000 dollars to date. Graves says if he was in the student section, he would rush the field too…

Baton Rouge Police believe a Texas death row inmate fatally shot 19- year-old LSU student Kassie Federer in her apartment in 1999.  Investigators say DNA has linked 49-year old Travis Green to the crime. Sgt. Don Coppola says he’s not sure of why Green had a connection with the Baton Rouge area, but says he may have been fleeing the Houston area following a murder.  Green is currently locked away for that killing that happened 11 days before the death of Federer.

The Saints are in Baltimore on Sunday to face the Ravens. Baltimore ranks number one in the NFL in total defense,. allowing 271 yards a game. They also lead the league in sacks as they have 26 of them. Linebacker Za’Darius Smith leads the way with 5.5 sacks.

The NBA season tips off tonight for the Pelicans in Houston as they will face the Rockets. Houston finished the regular season last year with the best record, winning 65 games. Coach Alvin Gentry likes the idea of beginning the season against the one of the NBA’s best teams…

Elfrid Payton and Julius Randle will make their regular season Pelicans debut tonight. Payton replaces Rajon Rondo, while Randle will come off the bench, but he’s still expected to log huge minutes.

The preseason SEC men’s basketball media poll came out today and the LSU Tigers are expected to finish fifth.

Meanwhile, Will Wade’s name came up during testimony in a New York federal courtroom, where a college basketball corruption trial is taking place.

A study claims Louisiana is bleeding jobs and cash due to the state’s worst in the nation TORT policy, that fosters what advocates say is an environment of frequently frivolous lawsuits. Louisiana Lawsuit Abuse Watch Executive Director Lana Venable noted beyond just macroeconomic effects, TORT policy can have a month to month impact on the average Louisianan and used the state’s sky-high auto insurance premiums as an example.

The first legal crop of medical marijuana is expected to be picked this week. G-B Sciences is growing the medicinal marijuana and they say the product could be ready to ship next month. But state regulations make it unclear on when the medical pot will be available to patients. The state department of agriculture still needs to find a third-party to test the product.
