A six-year-old south Louisiana girl shot during a balloon release has died; and as such, charges against four men are upgraded to second-degree murder. The four charged in the shooting of Riley Francis are Rickey Chaney, Daylon Andrus, Ja Andrea Kentrell Willis and Kimmy Ray Dauntain Junior. Lafayette Police Sergeant Robin Green says two were arrested in Texas, one in Lake Charles and the fourth in Lafayette.

The mother of Bryan Vasquez, the 12-year-old boy who drowned in a lagoon near his home last month, has been arrested. New Orleans Police Deputy Superintendent Nicholas Gernon says Hilda Vasquez had a pattern of abusing her non-verbal autistic son; she was convicted of abusing him when he was just three months old.

On this date in 1935 – 90 years ago – former Governor Huey Long was shot inside the State Capitol. Two days later, Long, who was a U.S. Senator at the time, would die at the age of 42 as a result from injuries suffered in that shooting. Retired LSU College of Business Dean Richard White wrote a book on Huey Long’s life; he said there were two Huey Longs – first, there was the Huey Long before his impeachment.

The mother of Bryan Vasquez, the 12-year-old non-verbal autistic boy found dead in a lagoon last month 12 days after disappearing from his home has been arrested. New Orleans Police Deputy Superintendent Hans Ganthier (GAHN-thee-ay) says 34-year-old Hilda Vasquez was arrested yesterday.

Police say Hilda Vasquez had a history of abusing her son, dating back to when he was an infant.

It was 90 years ago today when former Governor Huey Long was shot inside the State Capitol. Two days later, Long, who was a U.S. Senator at the time, would die at the age of 42. Retired LSU College of Business Dean Richard White wrote a book on Huey Long’s life; he said all in all, Huey Long was a fascinating man.

It appears that injuries to a couple of key players for LSU aren’t as bad as initially feared. Coach Brian Kelly said center Braelin Moore and tight end Trey’Dez Green both have a chance to play Saturday night against Florida. Moore sprained an ankle on the first play of Saturday night’s win over Louisiana Tech, while Green injured a knee in the fourth quarter.

The mother of the 12-year-old New Orleans boy whose body was pulled from a lagoon near the home he disappeared from 12 days earlier has been arrested. Andrew Greenstein reports.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff deputies say an impaired driver killed a 19-year-old on Saturday in a three-vehicle crash in Moss Bluff. The victim, Gideon Capitano, died from his injuries early Sunday morning. Deputies say 24-year-old Shelby Wood showed signs of impairment and performed poorly in sobriety testing and is now facing several charges including vehicular homicide.

 

LSU Football Coach Brian Kelly was upset on Saturday night about his team’s performance in a 23-7 win over Louisiana Tech. Kelly expressed frustration in the lack of a run game, but he says after watching the tape, the offense did several good things…

The mother of the 12-year-old autistic boy found dead in a lagoon has been arrested and charged with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and negligent homicide. The Orleans Parish coroner ruled the child’s death to be a drowning with blunt trauma consistent with an alligator attack. Detectives also say the mother was cruel and negligent. Deputy superintendent for the NOPD, Nicholas Gernon, says 34-year-old Hilda Vasquez was arrested previously for abusing Bryan when he was just three months old…

Gernon would not go into detail as to the circumstances of DCFS returning Bryan to the home or when it happened.

Sherrard (SHARE-id) Crespo with VIA LINK, which is one of the organizations putting on the event, says the event will be in the Formal Gardens at the Capitol this morning.

There are 51 ICE detainees housed in Angola with plans to hold more than 400. ACLU Louisiana legal director Nora Ahmed says immigration detention is a civil process to ensure court appearances, not punishment for criminal behavior…

Angola has a notorious reputation because it was once slave plantation. In the 1960s and 70s, there were numerous incidents of extreme violence and even in recent history there have been accusations of inhumane conditions.

U-S Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem says they absolutely chose Angola to send the worst of the worst ICE detainees because of its reputation…

ACLU of Louisiana says the housing of undocumented immigrants convicted of serious crimes at the Louisiana State Penitentiary is a dangerous disregard of the legal system. There are 51 ICE detainees in Camp 57 at Angola with plans to hold more than 400. ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan says the plan is for these detainees to eventually be sent back to their home country…

The Department of Health and other organizations are hosting 988 day at the Capitol today. Sherrard (SHARE-id) Crespo with VIA LINK says mental health is a major issue and unjustifiably stigmatized.

She hopes state and federal funding of the 988 suicide helpline continues.

Governor Landry’s wallet is 900 dollars lighter this morning. Steven Procopio, the president of the Public Affairs Research Council, says Landry was fined over non-disclosure of trips he took on other people’s aircraft while he was attorney general. Procopio says the trips were paid for by others but were for public purposes. He says we will never know if the fines are appropriate because of changes in the laws that govern ethics investigations.

Governor Landry had to pay a 900-dollar fine due to travel paid for by others on other’s aircraft during his time as attorney general. Public Affairs Research Council President, Steven Procopio says there was nothing illicit about these flights. They were all for a public purpose related to his duties as attorney general.

Fines could have been as high as ten thousand dollars per occurrence.

Today, 9/8 is 988 day and the Department of Health and other organizations are hosting an event at the Capitol. Sherrard Crespo with Via Link expresses concern of suicide rates, especially among younger Louisianans.

ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan says detainees will have access to a legal library and spaces to meet with their attorneys and she adds, the facility meets the organization’s standards.

The mother of the Bryan Vasquez, the 12-year-old non-verbal special needs boy found dead in a lagoon last month was arrested yesterday. Bryan had been missing for 2 weeks. The coroner reported cause of death as drowning and blunt force trauma from an alligator attack. Hilda Vasquez faces negligent homicide and second-degree cruelty to juveniles charges. NOPD officials report finding a pattern of negligence and abuse by Hilda Vasquez. They say Hilda Vasquez cause multiple serious injuries to Bryan when he was only three months old.
