The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s office has charged two of its deputies in the fatal shooting of a man inside a vehicle last week. 29-year-old Isaac Hughes and 35-year-old Johnathan Louis have been booked with manslaughter. They were involved in the shooting of Daniel Vallee. Sheriff Joe Lopinto says their investigation has determined that lethal force was not needed as Valee refused to step out of his vehicle in Marrero on February 16th.

The state has published a 189-page report that details how it plans to spend 600-million dollars in federal disaster recovery funding for Hurricanes Laura and Delta. Executive Director of the Office of Community Development Pat Forbes says the state is seeking public input and they’ll also conduct a series of forums to get more input from the public…

A major project to widen Interstate 10 through Baton Rouge calls for even more lane closures and congestion for an already-congested stretch of highway. DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson says work will begin soon on Phase 1 of the 5-phase project, and when fully underway motorists will have to endure long periods of lane closures through the construction zone…:

The lane reductions will take place in 2024 and the expansion will extend from LA 415 in West Baton Rouge Parish to the I-10–I-12 split.

When an Alexandria funeral home was unable to locate nearby relatives of a 94-year-old Air Force veteran who passed away, they contacted the baseball coach at Holy Savior Menard High School to see if he could help. Coach Jordan Marks considered it an honor and volunteered six seniors on his team to serve as pallbearers for Ralph Lambert’s service.

And since the funeral, Marks says he heard from several members of the community thanking him and his players for stepping up.

Louisiana has submitted its action plan to the feds for spending $600 million in federal aid in the recovery from Hurricanes Laura and Delta. The state proposes using the grant money for homeowner assistance, creating affordable housing, and other programs. Nearly $200 million would be dedicated to infrastructure needs. Pat Forbes, executive director of the Office of Community Development, says those dollars remove a tremendous burden from local governments.

Cut 10 (11) “…that match instead.”

Now the state will conduct a series of forums to get input from the public. Forbes says this is something the state has been actively doing over the last 18 months, but additional comment is needed to comply with HUD regulations and to further guide spending priorities.

Cut  11 (12)  “…what they think.”

Forbes says this is just the beginning as lawmakers at both the state and federal levels continue to fight for additional dollars to accelerate the state’s rebuild.

Entering the season, expectations for LSU’s baseball offense were sky-high. The Tigers did nothing to lower those after posting a program-record 51 runs in their opening series against Maine. Cade Doughty did his part, with five extra-base hits, including two home runs and 12 RBI on his way to winning SEC Player of the Week honors. He likes where the Tigers are right now in their approach at the plate.

Opposing pitchers have plenty to worry about as LSU rolls out multiple All-American candidates in its lineup each night. What makes the Tigers even scarier is that they’re still learning first-year coach Jay Johnson and each other. After batting .571 over the weekend, Doughty says there’s more he’s capable of if he sticks to the basics.

The LSU women’s basketball team continues to roll. The Tigers beat number 17 Florida on Sunday, 66-61. With the victory, LSU claims sole possession of second place in the SEC standings and climbs to number eight in the A-P rankings. It’s the highest the Tigers have been since the 2007-08 season when they reached the Final Four. Before beating back the Gators, Kim Mulkey told her team to enjoy the moment.

Alexis Morris scored a game-high 20 points for LSU.

After a three-game sweep of Maine where LSU scored a program-record 51 runs, it should come as no surprise that one of the Tigers has earned the first SEC Player of the Week award of the new season. Sophomore infielder Cade Doughty was selected for the honor after batting .571 with three doubles, two home runs, seven runs scored, and 12 driven in over 14 at-bats.

The U-L Cajuns took two of three from 14th-ranked Cal-Irvine, the defending Big West Conference Champions, over the weekend. UNO won three games over three different opponents at the Andre Dawson Classic, while UL-M dropped two of three against Southern Illinois. Louisiana Tech swept its three-game set with Wichita State, with reliever Kyle Crigger earning Conference USA Pitcher of the Week honors after picking up a win and a save in two scoreless appearances.

Dennis Allen continues to fill out his staff, as University of Tennessee receivers coach Kodi Burns has been hired for the same role with the New Orleans Saints, according to a report by ESPN. The Saints have struggled to find consistent production at the wideout position over the last two seasons with Michael Thomas missing 26 of the 33 games in that time. Last season, Marquez Callaway led the team with 698 yards, the lowest total for a Saints top receiver since Eric Martin’s 675 in 1986.

Back in Baton Rouge, LSU’s new receivers coach and passing game coordinator, Cortez Hankton, will remain with the team after interviewing with the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams for their vacant offensive coordinator position. Hankton joined Brian Kelly’s staff last month after four seasons with the Georgia Bulldogs.
