Governor John Bel Edwards is asking lawmakers to approve a $1500 teacher pay raise and $750 increase for support staff, President of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers Larry Carter is hopeful that’s a mere starting point and educators could see even more in their paycheck after this legislative session.

Carter is hopeful the raises could go even higher in an effort to attract and keep teachers from leaving the state. Carter says they are asking for even higher raises so Louisiana educators can reach the southern regional average sooner than later.

As for feedback from legislators on the pay raises, Carter says it’s mixed, while most support the raises others worry about the sustainability of pay raises in the future. But Carter says not making the investment could be even more costly.

Rising inflation is another reason Carter urges lawmakers to give teachers and support staff raises to keep them from leaving the profession or state sooner than later.

Lake Charles Senator Jeremy Stine is pushing the storm victims’ insurance reform package in his first legislative session. Stine says after two active hurricane seasons, many policyholders are just fed up with their insurance providers as they attempt to get money to repair their damaged home

Stine says he has bills that increase the penalties for insurance companies who fail to provide payment on a timely basis and double the fine a company could receive if the Insurance Commissioner determines they are acting in bad faith…

Insurance industry lobbyist Jeff Albright told the Advocate Newspaper that insurance companies have concerns with several of the bills filed for this legislative session and it’s difficult to pay out thousands of claims quickly after a catastrophe. But Stine calls his legislation a measured, reasonable approach and insurance companies who act in good faith will not be impacted…

LSU basketball has a storied history, but a murky future with major NCAA allegations to face and sanctions likely to follow. LSU alumnus and super fan James Carville believes LSU will survive this latest storm and come out ahead on the other side.

The LSU athletic program has taken a number of hits over the past few years, from an ongoing Title IX investigation to these latest problems with the basketball program. Carville says that athletic director Scott Woodward is up to the task of setting things right.

Whatever the program is going through, Carville doesn’t think it will have any impact on the support the players get as they enter the NCAA tournament, and that the team can overcome this adversity.

On this two-year anniversary of the first reported COVID death in Louisiana, Governor John Bel Edwards says he’s allowing the current public health emergency order to lapse without extending it. Edwards made the announcement during a joint session of the House and Senate…

The state has reported 16,913 COVID deaths. Edwards says the decision to end COVID-19 emergency declaration was not made lightly…

The state reported another 537 new COVID cases today.

During his annual State Of The State address, Governor John Bel Edwards announces he will not extend his COVID health emergency order. When it expires Wednesday, all state mandates and restrictions will lift. Louisiana reports just over 16, 900 COVID-related deaths over the two year pandemic. The Governor says this was a decision he didn’t make lightly…:

Louisiana mark 2 years today since the first CVOVID death in our state was reported. Mr. Edwards says just because the emergency order is ending doesn’t mean COVID is over.

Lawmen in Baton Rouge searching for a missing woman and her child find two bodies today. The remains were found in opposite ends of the city, but police believe they may be connected with the disappearance of the 24-year-old woman and her two-year-old son. They’ve been missing since March 5th. Neither body has been identified as yet.

Another New Orleans-based cruise ship passenger goes overboard in the Gulf. Last Friday, a man leaped over the rail of a Norwegian Cruise Lines ship. As of today, his body has not been found. The ship is en route back to New Orleans. Last month a woman jumped overboard from a Carnival cruise ship; also never to be seen again.

A Walker man accidentally shot and killed a 17-year old pregnant woman. 23-year-old Chad Blanchard, accidentally fired his handgun while riding in the back seat along Seigen Lane Saturday evening. According to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office. The bullet went through the back of Karrington Smith and she and the fetus were pronounced dead at a local hospital. Before her death, Smith tried to take the blame before investigators figured out what actually happened. Blanchard has been booked on counts of negligent homicide, third-degree feticide, and illegal use of a weapon.

The legislative session officially kicked off at noon today and there are a number of topics lawmakers will address Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says with several bills to expand the state’s medical-marijuana program, many conservative voters are still leery the expansion is moving the state closer to approving recreational marijuana use…

The NCAA tabbed LSU as a six-seed for the Men’s Tournament, but Will Wade will not be joining the Tigers in Milwaukee, where they will play 11th-seeded Iowa State out of the Big 12 on Friday night. Assistant Kevin Nickleberry takes the reigns after Wade was terminated by LSU for alleged major recruiting violations within the program over a number of years. Nickelberry says the players were heartbroken when they learned of Wade’s firing, but they’ll be ready to play in the NCAA Tournament…

LSU has now advanced to three straight NCAA Tournaments, but the search for a new head coach will be impacted, just how much will depend on how harsh the NCAA is with its punishment.

Good news on the diamond for LSU as they completed a three-game home sweep of the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. The Tigers outscored the Wildcats 28-8 over the weekend, including a 15-0 shutout on Sunday. Four players had three RBI and Ma’Khail Hilliard struck out six over six scoreless innings as LSU improved to 13-3.

Kim Mulkey and the LSU women’s basketball team are staying home for the start of the NCAA tournament. The P-MAC will host first and second-round contests for the first time in 8 years, with the third-seeded Tigers taking on Jackson State this Saturday. When Mulkey was the head coach at Baylor last season, her Lady Bears beat Jackson State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, so she’s familiar with them…

Without Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum, the Pelicans snapped their four-game losing streak with a 130-105 grounding of the Houston Rockets. Jonas Valanciunas led the way with 32 points and 10 rebounds in just 27 minutes. Rookie Jose Alvarado collected the first double-double of his career with 16 points and 10 assists. The Pels close out their four-game homestand against the Phoenix Suns tomorrow night.

Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon and House & Senate insurance committee leaders announce a package of bills aimed at benefiting homeowners affected by major storms, like Hurricane Ida last summer. Senate Bill 134 clarifies that policyholders can collect additional living expense benefits when they have to evacuate; even if an official evacuation order has not yet been announced.

Baton Rouge Senator Cleo Fields thanked State Police Lieutenant Johnny Brown for appearing before the committee and was upset when he was reminded he could only ask hypothetical questions regarding LSP procedure due to the federal investigation into the death of Ronald Greene. Fields voiced his frustration that those who’ve shared information with the committee face consequences for doing so.

The 2022 regular legislative session begins at noon. Legislators will spend the next three months determining how to spend two-point-eight billion dollars in revenues as a result of coronavirus pandemic aid and state surplus dollars. Redistricting, anti-transgender bills, abortion legislation, and allowing for the carrying of a concealed handgun without a permit are other issues.

Insurance reform will be a big topic during the course of the three-month long legislative session that begins today. Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says the package of the bills will improve the overall picture for all involved…

One of the bills filed would require insurance companies to pay for expenses if the policyholder is forced to evacuate due to an approaching storm.

State Police Lt. Johnny Brown appeared before the State Police Oversight Committee and told the panel he recommended the firing of one of the troopers involved in the 2019 fatal arrest of Ronald Greene. Brown was also asked about the slow release of body camera footage but he couldn’t give more information because the case is under federal investigation…

Brown made that revelation as he was questioned by Monroe Senator Katrina Jackson…

Greene died in 2019 in State Police custody. Body camera video shows he was beaten and tased before his death. A federal investigation is ongoing, but no charges have been handed down.
