On August 1st a new law forbidding officers from using the smell of marijuana as probable cause to search one’s house goes into effect. New Iberia Representative Marcus Bryant’s House Bill 629 won final passage and was signed into law by the governor. He says his bill codified federal statute into state law. Bryant says it is needed, now that a growing number of citizens are using legal medical marijuana. He says those patients shouldn’t have to worry about what happens if a police officer shows up at their door…

A woman has been arrested in St. Martin Parish for stabbing an officer. Sheriff’s Captain Ginny Higgins said 26-year-old Ashley Burton, who is from Las Vegas, is now charged with attempted murder of a police officer, resisting arrest, simple escape, possession of narcotics, and more. Higgins says the deputy Burton stabbed has been treated and released from medical care…:

Deputies in St. Martin Parish arrest a woman for stabbing an officer during an arrest. Sheriff’s Captain Ginny Higgins says some St. Martinville residents called them to report a suspicious woman, knocking on doors and asking to be given a gun. When a deputy stopped 26-year-old Ashley Burton to question her, she tried to flee on foot, struggled with the officer and then stabbed him. Higgins says, when Burton fled the vehicle and the deputy, she left something very important in the car…:

Burton is now charged with attempted murder of a police officer, drug possession and more.

Starting Monday, a new law takes effect stating police cannot use the smell of marijuana as probable cause for a warrantless search or arrest. New Iberia Rep. Marcus Bryant brought the bill and says medical marijuana patients shouldn’t have to worry about this happening to them…:

Again the new law takes effect August 1st.

River Ridge Senator Kirk Talbot says punishment could be up to 20 years in prison with fines up to $50-thousand. He says some criminal steal dozens in one night, and sell them in bulk…:

The NSU Demons basketball team adds Florida prep hoops star Hansel Enmanuel to its 2022 recruiting class. His stats make him a standout, yes…but also amazing is he has only one arm. Demons coach Corey Gipson says that challenge makes Enmanuel even more determined…:

Saints coach Dennis Allen says tight end Taysom Hill has injured his ribs and will be out for a little bit. Hill missed the spring workouts to recover from surgery on his left foot.

Much of the media attention at Saints training camp is on the offense, who now has a healthy Jameis Winston and Michael Thomas, plus the additions of receivers Chris Olave and Jarvis Landry. But Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan says the defense will take this team where it wants to go…

LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson announces the signings of five Division one transfers. Right-handed pitcher Christian Little of Vanderbilt, North Carolina state third baseman Tommy White, Vandy shortstop Carter Young, UCLA Pitcher Thatcher Hurd and Air Force pitcher and utility player Paul Skenes, who earned first team All-American honors last season. Also Young was a 17th round draft choice by the Orioles, but decided to play at LSU instead.

A state appeals court has reinstated Louisiana ban on abortions. The First Circuit Court of Appeal granted a preliminary injunction to put the ban back in effect, after a district judge had blocked the trigger laws. The appeal was filed by Attorney General Jeff Landry. So abortion clinics must once again close their doors.

Higgins says Burton also left two small kids in her car, when she dashed away. They are now in the custody of Children & Family Services.

A cop in New Roads, in Pointe Coupee Parish, is on administrative leave; accused of sexually assaulting a teenage male. New Roads Police Chief Kevin McDonald says the officer has been on the job 8 months and has a clean record. He says the investigation is still active. We’re withholding the officer’s name because he hasn’t yet been arrested or punished.

Starting Monday, stealing catalytic converters will be a specified crime in Louisiana; one with harsh penalties. River Ridge Senator Kirk Talbot sponsored the measure during the legislative session. He says most frequently the parts are stolen from pickups and SUVs…:

Under the new law, those convicted of stealing catalytic converters could face fines up to $50-thousand and jail time of up to 20 years.

The Florida prep star dominated the hard wood in high school with one arm. Demons Coach Corey Gipson says it doesn’t even dawn on him that Enmanuel has a disability

Enmanuel is from the Dominican Republic and he had his left arm amputated at the age of 6 after a wall collapsed on it. Gipson says it’s clear that life challenges have made the three-star recruit even more determined…:

Enmanuel is 6’4″ and in his senior season he averaged 26 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 block a game. Gipson says the Enmanuel family showed the program the type of passion and love for the game that they look for at NSU. He says Enmanuel is a great player, with a great attitude

The new law also requires catalytic converters have a registration number to track sales and transfers. If the value of the cataltyic converters stolen is greater than $25,000, jail time would be 10 to 20 years.

The bill was authored by New Iberia Representative Marcus Bryant, who says there are still warrantless searches and arrests being made, simply because an LEO smelled weed. He says the new law makes it clear for police…:

Higgins says, when Burton fled the vehicle and the deputy, she left two small kids in the car. They’re with DCFS now and the deputy is expected to be just fine. Burton face numerous charges, including attempted murder of an LEO.

State Attorney General Jeff Landry filed an appeal today of Baton Rouge Judge Don Johnson’s ruling allowing abortion clinics to remain open. He’s also requesting speedy consideration to stop Louisiana’s three abortion clinics from performing procedures while the case is under appeal. A state law declared most abortions illegal with the overturning of Roe vs Wade, but legal challenges have been underway ever since.

Saints Coach Dennis Allen says he’s been impressed with quarterback Jameis Winston’s leadership during the first few days of training camp. Winston has better receivers to throw to this season with free agent addition Jarvis Landry and the selecting of Chris Olave in the draft. There’s also the return of Michael Thomas. Thomas has caught over 500 passes in his career and in the last season he was healthy, he was named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year. Over in Tampa Bay, Buccaneers pro bowl center Ryan Jensen went down with a knee injury and the fear is that he tore his ACL and will miss the upcoming season. The 31-year-old center agreed to a three-year 39-million dollar contract in March.

An All-American at Air Force announces he’s transferring to LSU to play baseball for the Tigers. Right-hander Paul Skenes was the Mountain West Conference Co-Pitcher of the Year with a 10-3 record and 2.73 ERA in 15 starts as a sophomore. He can also slug. At the plate Skenes hit .314 with 13 homers and 38 RBIs.
