New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell says she will not reimburse the city for almost $30-thousand in travel upgrades during recent trips to Miami, D.C. and France. She says the additional dollars were for her (quote) “safety, not luxury.” Cantrell‘s extravagance is one reason cited for the recall petition against her.

 

So, imagine your 71-year-old friend who’s never been gator hunting in their life, tells you he caught one that he thought weighed around 400 pounds. You’d laugh at them, right? Well, Jerry Sepulvado of Calhoun did just that Wednesday on Lake St. John. He actually caught three gators and one was a real whopper…:

A Baton Rouge grocery store near LSU has temporarily converted its salad bar into a massive beer cooler, ahead of tomorrow’s LSU vs. Southern University tailgating and game. The game is sold out, tailgate crowds are expected to be of record-setting size…and Matherne’s market on Nicholson hopes to cash in on the adaptation. Kickoff is a 6:30 Saturday in Tiger Stadium.

It tells the story of Metairie native David Scotton, whose birth mother changed her mind on the abortion table and gave him up for adoption. David’s adoptive mother Susan says actor Kirk Cameron produced the movie after seeing a documentary about the Scottons…

The 2018 documentary on the adoption story of Scotton is called “I Lived on Parker Avenue. It was produced by Louisiana Right to Life. Susan Scotton says she’s amazed that the adoption of David has turned into a movie…

Susan Scotton says she thinks the move is especially timely after the overturning of Roe vs Wade.

David Scotton is in his twenties now. He has met his birth mother, and Susan says that the two mothers exchange periodic texts, especially on Mother’s Day.

Southern and LSU meet tomorrow in an historic football matchup, but to leaders of the two schools, it’s much more than a game. It’s a chance to bridge historic racial, cultural, and academic divides. Dr. Dennis Shields is Chancellor of Southern University.

The two schools have a new five year plan to collaborate more closely in a range of academic areas. But Shields says the new connections are about much more than agreements on paper.

He says that for the first time, deans and other academic leaders from both schools sat down and had face conversations.

He’s hoping that the game and celebration of both schools and Louisiana as a whole will make both schools stronger.

Detillier says a key for the Saints this season is to run the football better. He says New Orleans averaged less than four yards a carry…

Congressman Garret Graves says according to an independent study, Louisiana is the most overpriced state in the country for flood insurance. He says the non-profit group First Street did the analysis.

Graves says FEMA tried to raise flood premiums during the Obama Administration but there was an intervention and a second attempt during the Trump Administration was also circumvented.

Cut 13 (08) “…they’ve refused.” 

The rate hikes are significantly higher in Louisiana. Graves says he’s seen some premiums go from $560 annually to $8,000. He believes FEMA’s rate hikes are an overreach and there’s a bipartisan effort asking for transparency of the agency.

Graves says the agency should be investing in infrastructure to protect areas vulnerable to flooding instead of overcharging policyholders.

Graves says policyholders are seeing higher rates when they renew their flood insurance, and they will continue to climb each year without intervention.

This may come as no surprise, but Louisiana is the most overpriced of states for cost of flood insurance. An independent study by First Street made the conclusion. District 6 Congressman Garret Graves says he’s seen some premiums go from $560 annually to $8,000. He says attempts to jack up flood insurance were attempted under Presidents Obama and Trump…:

A teenage carjacker was shot and killed Thursday night, after he fired on Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s deputies trying to arrest him. The incident happened very near the Jefferson/Orleans parish line in Algiers. The suspect is not identified because he is only 16. No officers were hurt in the gunfire.

City policy says traveling city employees are required to seek the lowest fares available or reimburse the city for deluxe accommodations. Cantrell says the trips and expenses will help improve New Orleans.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is celebrating a successful breeding season for the endangered whooping crane. LDWF biologist Sara Zimorski says eight more chicks have reached fledgling stage in south Louisiana that’s out of the 15 that hatched….

The first wild-hatched Louisiana chick came in April of 2016, the first to hatch in the state in more than 75 years.

The Saints have reportedly reached a five year contract extension with center Erik McCoy. McCoy could make up to 64-million dollars in the deal and 40 million dollars is guaranteed. McCoy was a second round pick in 2019 and has played in 44 games in his first three seasons.

The death of Queen Elizabeth II ends the reign of Britain’s longest-serving monarch. At the age of 25, she succeeded her father, King George VI, after his death in 1952. LSU History Professor Meredith Veldman said even though the royal family no longer governs the United Kingdom…

Queen Elizabeth will be remembered for many things, but Veldman believes her sense of duty will be her lasting legacy.

And while the Queen also weathered several royal scandals, for example, the fallout from Princess Diana’s death, Veldman says ironically there’s more fascination with the royal family across the pond.

The statistical peak of the hurricane season is Saturday. Surprisingly, this is one of the calmest hurricane seasons in a while. NOAA predicted up to 20 named storms, but there have only been five named storms. State Climatologist Barry Keim says after two super active seasons, it’s nice to get a break

Louisiana’s whooping crane population has grown by eight this year to 76 as eight wild hatched chicks have fledged, which is the most in a single breeding season since whooping cranes were added back into the wildlife in 2011. LDWF biologist Sara Zimorski says dry conditions may have helped the chicks survive…

Whooping cranes are slow to mature and only one to eggs during a nesting attempt.

Social media in Houma is abuzz over reports of a live tiger being spotted in downtown Houma. The Houma police department told a New Orleans TV station that they’ve received multiple calls about a loose tiger, but they have not laid eyes on any exotic animal.
