A study out of LSU attempts to help solve the problem of childhood obesity. Dr. Amanda Staiano with Pennington Biomedical Research Center says one in two Louisiana kids struggle with their weight. She says the goal of the TIGER Kids research study is to learn how much physical activity kids are getting, what they’re eating, and what can be done to improve their health.

Cut 3 (12) “be more active”

Staiano says they’re trying to tailor programs to help kids make healthy choices because one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to losing weight. She says they’re also interested in other aspects of kids’ lives because it’s not just diet and exercise that affect a person’s health.

cut 4  (10) “with their family”

Staiano says less than 10-percent of children are getting the recommended amount of physical activity every day. She hopes the technology they use in the study can help them encourage kids to be more active.

Cut 5  (09)  “to the park”

Staiano says they’ve already enrolled over 100 kids in the study, but they need over 300 to complete the study. She says parents can enroll their kids at PBRC.edu/HealthierLA.

The trial begins today for one Marksville City Marshal accused of fatally shooting a 6-year-old boy. 33-year-old Derrick Stafford is one of two officers accused of firing into the victim’s vehicle in November of 2015 killing an autistic child, Jeremy Mardis and injuring his father, Chris Few. Legal Analyst Tim Meche says the graphic body camera video will play a critical part in the case…

Cut 6 (08) “his career”

The body camera footage shows Few with his hands up inside the vehicle before Stafford and the other Marshal, Norris Greenhouse, Jr. began firing. Stafford is charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. Meche says Stafford claims he started shooting in self-defense.

CUT 7 (10)  “bodily injury”

There has also been talk that a third shooter could be involved. Meche expects Stafford’s and Greenhouse’s defense attorneys could bring that up during the trial.

Cut 8 (10) “their clients”

Greenhouse’s trail is set to begin June 12th.

All three of Louisiana’s US Attorneys have resigned or retired after US Attorney General Jeff Sessions called for mass resignations last week. US Attorney Walt Green of Louisiana’s middle district is the latest to step down. East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore is disappointed because he says Green is the kind of guy you want in a leadership position.

Cut 9 (11)  “particular party”

Moore says Green is an Independent appointed to office by former-President Obama. He says it’s not unusual for a new administration, particularly one of a different party, to want their own people heading departments. But that didn’t stop him from sending a letter to President Donald Trump asking that Green be kept on board.

Cut 10 (09) “and integrity”

Moore says Green received a letter Friday asking him to step down by Monday or he would be terminated. Lafayette area US Attorney Stephanie Finley and New Orleans-based US Attorney Kenneth Polite both announced their departure Friday. Moore says Green’s resignation could slow down the Alton Sterling investigation.

Legislation has been filed for the 2017 regular session that could put students in jail for bringing a toy gun to school. Bossier Parish Sheriff Julian Whittington urged Haughton Representative Dodie Horton to file the measure because fake guns look incredibly real nowadays. Whittington says painted pretend guns cause panic and chaos in schools…

If signed into law, a student could be fined up to 250 dollars or spend six months in jail. Whittington says the penalty is serious but so is the potential for a student getting shot…

Cut 13 (09) “number one”

Whittington says he requested the bill after a scare in Bossier last year where students brought in a fake and a real gun. He says when he thinks of a toy gun, he remembers green water guns he played with as a kid.
