Former secretary of state and state lawmaker Al Ater has passed away. The Ferriday resident served as interim Secretary of State in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina hit. He was in charge of putting together a mayoral election for New Orleans in 2006. Ater was receiving treatment for brain cancer. He was 63.
