According to the National Federation of Independent Business, today is a great day to shop local during the state’s tax free holiday weekend. The 4 percent state sales tax will be waived on retail items; up to 25 hundred dollars. N-F-I-B State director Dawn Starns says if more individuals shop at smaller stores, more jobs will be saved and the economy will bounce back quicker.

A New Orleans man has been arrested in connection to a double-homicide in Donaldsonville on January 26th. Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 26 year-old Quinton Jackson in the Crescent City, and charged him with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of 37 year-old Chad Nichols and 29 year-old Benny Booker. Authorites believe the shooting was a drug-related crime.

A Baton Rouge man faces a cruelty charge following alleged incident that sent his 3 month old daughter to the hospital with skull and rib fractures, bruising and a bloody mouth. Twenty-eight year-old John William Hope is charged with 2nd degree cruelty to a juvenile. According to an affidavit, the baby is in critical, but stable condition; with no brain activity reported. The report says Hope told his wife that the baby had fallen off a changing table.
