Louisiana Tech is now 5-0 in Conference USA after a 59-10 win over Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers came into the game as one of the highest scoring teams in the country. Bulldogs Coach Skip Holtz says the gameplan coming into the game was to beat them in a shootout…

It turns out the Bulldogs didn’t have to score many points as they gave up just one first quarter touchdown to Western Kentucky. With the win, Louisiana Tech is bowl eligible.

Grambling State is also undefeated in its conference play. Quarterback Johnathan Williams threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns as the Tigers downed Texas Southern 35-7. Grambling is 6-0 in the SWAC.

Southern kept pace with Grambling in the SWAC Western Division, with a 28-21 win over Alabama State. Freshman Austin Howard threw for 291 yards and two touchdowns.

The Ragin Cajuns are still undefeated in Sun Belt play after winning their homecoming match-up Saturday. U-L Lafayette beat South Alabama 19-to-9 to improve to 4-0 in the Sun Belt. The Cajuns were led offensively by Elijah McGuire who had 90 yards receiving and 116 yards rushing and a touchdown. Coach Mark Hudspeth had high praise for McGuire after the game…

The Cajuns did not allow any points in the 2nd half and they held the Jaguars to 66 yards rushing.

McNeese State is in a three-way tie for first place in the Southland Conference after beating Northwestern State 35-28. The Cowboys now own 10 straight victories over the Demons. Dylan Long had three rushing touchdowns for the 2nd consecutive game. McNeese shares the conference lead with Sam Houston State and Southeastern Louisiana.

It’s homecoming in Ruston and Lafayette today. The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs have the chance to become bowl eligible with a win over Western Kentucky at two o’ clock at Joe Aillet Stadium. The Bulldogs are also seeking to go 5-and-0 in Conference USA play.

The Ragin Cajuns will host South Alabama for homecoming. Last year the Jaguars beat U-L Lafayette 30-8. Coach Mark Hudspeth remembers that game well and knows South Alabama is not your typical homecoming opponent…

Kick-off at Cajun Field is at 4 PM.

ULM has an 11 A-M kick-off in College Station today where they’ll face Texas A-and-M. The Aggies started 5-and-0, but they’ve lost their last three games and may start freshman Kyle Allen at quarterback.

McNeese State goes after its tenth straight win over Northwestern State when the two teams meet at Turpin Stadium at Six P-M. The Cowboys have won their last two games, while the Demons gave up 58 points in a loss to Central Arkansas last week.

Nicholls State has a good opportunity at its first win of the season when they host Incarnate Word, who has just one win. Both of these teams have struggled to put points on the board, but Nicholls should play inspired in front of a homecoming crowd.

In the SWAC…Grambling State returns from the bye week to visit Texas Southern. The Tigers are looking to improve to 6-0 in the league. Quarterback Jonathan Williams has been terrific for Grambling. He had three passing and two rushing touchdowns two weeks ago against Arkansas Pine Bluff.

Also today, Southern hosts Alabama State.

At the Smoothie King Center, the Pelicans will take on the Dallas Mavericks at six P-M.

Tech’s defense will be tested by the Hilltoppers ability to throw the football. They are averaging 410 passing yards a game and they beat Old Dominion 66-51 last week.

U-L-M visits Texas A-and-M and kick-off is set for 11 A-M in College Station. The Aggies are averaging 364 passing yards a game, but A-and-M Coach Kevin Sumlin has reportedly made a change at quarterback. True freshman Kyle Allen will get the start.

In high school football last night…Byrd beat Southwood 34-12, Natchitcohes Central over Pineville 35-20, Parkway knocked off Haughton 57-28 and Thibodaux blanked South LaFourche 35-0.

The Louisiana Tech men’s basketball team is receiving votes in the preseason A-P Top 25 poll. When you count up the Bulldogs votes, they are ranked 37th. LSU is also receiving votes and they are ranked 38th.

Running back Mark Ingram rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns as the Saints beat the Carolina Panthers 28-10 last night in Charlotte. Quarterback Drew Brees threw for 297 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score as the Black and Gold improved to 4-4 on the season and took over first place in the NFC South. The win snaps a seven game losing streak on the road for the Saints.

It’s homecoming weekend on the campus of U-L Lafayette. The Ragin Cajuns, who are undefeated in the Sun Belt, will face conference rival South Alabama, who has just one loss in league play. Coach Mark Hudspeth says there’s a lot of great events around campus celebrating homecoming, but his players have to worry about the game…

Three players have been ruled out for the Saints tonight. Running back Pierre Thomas, linebacker David Hawthorne and fullback Austin Johnson. This is the second straight game Thomas will miss because of a shoulder injury, while Hawthorne hurt his hand in the Green Bay win.

Former LSU Tiger Jarvis Landry has been named the A-F-C Special Teams Player of the Month. Landry leads the NFL with a 31-yard kickoff return average.

Tonight in the Sun Belt Conference, Georgia Southern hosts Troy. Georgia Southern and the Ragin Cajuns are both undefeated in league play and tied for first in the Sun Belt. U-L Lafayette hosts South Alabama this Saturday. The Jaguars are 4-and-1 in the Sun Belt this year and last season they beat the Cajuns 30 to 8.

The Panthers starting left tackle, Byron Bell, is out because of a knee injury. But running back DeAngelo Williams returns after missing the last six games because of injuries.

LSU and Alabama are both off this Saturday, which gives them extra time to get healthy for their match-up in Death Valley on November eighth. The Crimson Tide’s leading rusher TJ Yeldon has not practiced this week and has been seen wearing a walking boot. But Bama’s Nick Saban anticipates Yeldon will return to practice on Monday.

Jimmy Anderson of Lake Charles has been named the interim executive director of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association. Anderson will fill the role once served by Kenny Henderson, until a person can take over the position on a full-time basis. Anderson is a past president of the LHSAA and currently serves as a rules compliance officer in Lake Charles.

In high school football action today…John Curtis will face De La Salle. Both teams have six wins on the season. It will be the 600th game for legendary Patriots head coach J-T Curtis.

In college basketball…Stephen F Austin has been picked to win the Southland Conference based on a poll of the league’s coaches. Northwestern State received a first-place vote and is expected to finish second. McNeese State is projected to finish in fifth place. Tulane is expected to finish in last place in the American Athletic Conference.

In the NBA,,,the Pelicans are off today. They don’t play again until Saturday, when they host the Dallas Mavericks.

LSU is the first school in the country to use a special mouthguard that monitors the impact of hits to a player’s head. Jesse Harper, president of I-One Biometrics says the mouthguard has tiny electronic pieces inside and it provides information to the trainers on the sidelines, so they can monitor for possible concussion activity….

The Pelicans frontcourt of Omer Asik and Anthony Davis combined for 40 points, 34 rebounds, and 14 blocks as New Orleans opened the NBA regular season with a 101-84 win over the Orlando Magic last night at the Smoothie King Center. Davis led all scorers with 26 points. Former UL-Lafayette standout Elfrid Payton started for the Magic and had 4 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds in his NBA debut.

For the third time this season, the University of Louisiana at Monroe will play a team out of the S-E-C this weekend. The Warhawks are at Texas A-and-M for an 11 A-M kickoff Saturday morning. Coach Todd Berry says whether it’s a team out of the SEC or Sun Belt, he wants his team to prepare the same way…

LSU Atheltic Director Joe Alleva released a statement yesterday encouraging Tiger fans to remain in the seating areas the next time LSU has a big win in Death Valley. Alleva says LSU represents the achievement of victory with dignity and they do no want to sacrifice safety or sportsmanship. The school has been fined five-thousand dollars for violating the SEC’s policy against fans rushing onto the field or court.
