The first training camp practice of 2015 is in the books for the Saints. A steady rainfall fell through the first half of practice today, but Coach Sean Payton says the team did ok in the wet conditions….

According to Saints sideline reporter Kristian Garic, he says the play of the day was a diving interception by defensive back Keenan Lewis on a pass thrown by quarterback Ryan Griffin. Lewis also had a nice deflection of a pass thrown by Quarterback Drew Brees.

The LSU football team is ranked 13th in the preseason coaches poll which came out today. The Tigers go into this season with a new defensive coordinator, Kevin Steele, who replaces John Chavis. Saints training camp got underway this morning in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, without their top pass rusher from a season ago. Linebacker Junior Galette was a hot topic as team officials met with the media prior to the first practice. Coach Sean Payton says they wish Galette well and it was not an easy decision to let him go….

The Saints will look to fill the void left by Galette with former Cowboys linebacker Anthony Spencer and second round pick Hau’oli Kikaha (ha-OH-lee key KAH kah) from Washington.

Former UL-Lafayette linebacker Justin Anderson has reportedly signed a free agent deal with the Dallas Cowboys. Former LSU Tiger Stevan Ridley has been placed on the New York Jets physically unable to perform list. He’s still recovering from a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee.

The LSU Tigers, who are coming off an eight and five season and have question marks at the quarterback position, are ranked 13th in the preseason coaches poll. ESPN-dot-com college football writer Chris Low expects Brandon Harris to win the starting Q-B battle…

Suspended LSU quarterback Anthony Jennings could be back on the team soon as East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore says charges stemming from the QB’s arrest in June will likely be dropped. Jennings was arrested for unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling but Moore says the people renting that apartment have stated they don’t wish to pursue…:

Jennings has been suspended from team activities since his June arrest on a charge of unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling. But East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore says it’s likely that the charges against Jennings and two teammates could be dismissed. Moore says since the arrest, the people renting that apartment have asked that the charges be dropped…

LSU Coach Les Miles says the status of the players fully depends on the schedule of the DA.

After going seven and nine last season, the Saints are ready to turn the page as they begin training camp today. The roster has been overhauled since the last time New Orleans played a game and that includes the release of the team’s top pass rusher Junior Galette. General Manager Mickey Loomis believes all the changes made will result in more wins this season…

The Saints begin preseason play at Baltimore two weeks from today.

At the Southland Conference Media Day in Lake Charles, the Southeastern Louisiana football team is picked to finish second in the conference this season behind Sam Houston State. The Lions shared conference championship honors with the Bearkats last season. McNeese State is predicted to finish third in the league. Northwestern State is picked in the fifth spot, with Nicholls State coming in at the number 10 position.

The LSU Tigers report for fall camp a week from today. LSU Quarterback Anthony Jennings and two other players remain suspended after they were arrested for an alleged break-in. Coach Les Miles spoke at the Baton Rouge Rotary Club and East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore was in the audience….

Moore says the charges against Jennings and his teammates, Maquedius Bain and Dwayne Thomas, will likely be dropped, because the alleged victim in this case does not want to pursue charges. The D-A says he’s still waiting on some additional paperwork, before making a final determination about the case.

The first training camp practice takes place tomorrow for the Saints, who are seeking to improve on last year’s seven and nine record. New Orleans defense struggled last year, but NFL analyst Mike Detillier likes the additions that have been made to the defensive secondary…

For right now, Byrd is not healthy. He along with receiver Marques Colston and defensive tackle Glenn Foster are on the physically unable to perform list to begin training camp.

According to a poll of the league’s coaches, Sam Houston State has been picked to win the Southland Conference. The Bearkats received eight first-place votes. Southeastern Louisiana has been picked to finish second, McNeese State third, Northwestern State fifth and Nicholls State tenth in the eleven team league.

In major league baseball today….the Cubs beat the Rockies 3 to 2, Pittsurgh pounded the Twins 10-4, Cleveland clobbered Kansas City 12-1 and Detroit topped Tampa Bay 2-1.

Training camp begins today for the Saints who are required to report to the team’s facility in West Virginia. The team is ready to put behind last season’s disappointing 7-and-9 campaign. NFL analyst Mike Detillier says the Saints spent the offseason trying to improve their offensive and defensive lines and that’s where you’ll find your big training camp battles…

Detillier says it will be interesting to see if the Saints top draft pick, offensive tackle Andrus Peat, can perform well enough to earn a starting spot.

The Saints have released veteran defensive tackle Broderick Buckley after he failed a physical. Safety Jairus Byrd, wide receiver Marques Colston, and defensive lineman Glenn Foster have each been declared physically unable to perform. As soon as those players are healthy, they will be able to return to the field.

LSU men’s basketball coach Johnny Jones announces he’s hired Brendan Suhr as an assistant coach. Suhr won a pair of NBA titles as an assistant for Chuck Daly, who guided the Detroit Pistons to world championships in 1989 and 1990. Suhr has also spent time as an assistant for the Toronto Raptors, Orlando Magic and New York Knicks. He’s most recently been an assistant at Central Florida and the New Jersey native has been busy with his speaking and consulting firm known as Off the Court.

The Ragin Cajuns have announced that baseball coach Tony Robichaux has signed a new five-year contract keeping him in the UL Lafayette dugout through the 2020 season. The deal will pay Robichaux a base salary of 155-thousand dollars a year. He can also receive bonuses for winning Sun Belt championships and appearing in the NCAA Tournament.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has upheld New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s four-game suspension for his role in the “Deflategate” scandal. Brady and the Patriots are accused to using underinflated footballs during January’s AFC Championship game.

The Saints have arrived at their training camp facility in West Virginia. Tomorrow is the official reporting day, but some players have already taken physicals and one guy who did not pass was defensive tackle Broderick Buckley. He’s been released because of it.

The Saints report to training camp tomorrow at their practice facility in West Virginia. The Black and Gold have officially released linebacker Junior Galette, as the off the field issues became too much for the organization. Galette denies that he slammed several players and coaches in a twitter rant that purportedly belonged to his girlfriend.

Former LSU baseball player Chris Sciambra will compete for a spot on the Nicholls State football roster. While Sciambra’s baseball eligibility is all used up, he can compete in another sport for one season, so he’s decided to compete as a placecker and punter for the Colonels. Sciambra says he can kick mid 50 yard field goals.

In high school football recruiting news…Rummel quarterback Chase Fourcade has committed to Nicholls State. He’s the nephew of former Saints quarterback John Fourcade. And St. James quarterback Lowell Narcisse has committed to Auburn over LSU. He’s ranked as the nation’s third best dual threat quarterback by 24-7 sports.

LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri says infielders Grayson Byrd and Danny Zardon are transferring. Zardon is reportedly heading to Nova Southeastern, an NAIA school in Florida. Zardon hit .288 in a reserve role last season. Byrd hit just .212 and appeared in 24 games. He’s the son of former LSU star pitcher Paul Byrd.

Former LSU Tiger Kevin Gausman had one of his best starts as a major leaguer last night as he threw 7.2 shutout innings and struck out five, allowing six hits. Gausman received a no decision, but his Orioles defeated the Braves 2-to 1 in 11 innings on Matt Wieters walk-off home run.

The Houston Astros have promoted former LSU Tiger Alex Bregman to their High-A team in Lancaster, California.

On a conference call with reporters, Pelicans star Anthony Davis says he’s excited about the direction the team is heading and loves playing in New Orleans. Davis recently signed a five-year, 145-million dollar contract extension.

LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri announces that two players are transferring. Junior infielder Danny Zardon leaves the program for Nova Southeastern University. Zardon, who was never be able to lock down a spot in the starting lineup, will be immediately eligible to play for the Sharks. The other transfer is Grayson Byrd. Byrd had a .212 batting average appearing in 24 games last season. It has not been announced what school Byrd will attend.

Rummel quarterback Chase Fourcade has announced his commitment to play college football at Nicholls State. The 6-foot, 180 pound senior is entering his third season as a starter for the Raiders. In his junior season, Fourcade threw for over 1,600 yards and 17 touchdowns. Fourcade is the son of former Ole Miss linebacker Keith Fourcade and the nephew of former Saints quarterback John Fourcade. Fourcade chose Nicholls State over McNeese State.

Former LSU baseball player, Chris Sciambra’s college athletic career may not be over, just yet. Scambria will be competing as a placekicker and punter for the Nicholls State football team this fall. After graduating LSU this spring, Sciambra still has one year of college eligibility remaining. He says he would regret letting his last year of eligibility go to waste. Sciambra was a walk-on for the LSU football team last fall, but never appeared in a game.

McNeese State quarterback Daniel Sams has been named to the 2015 FCS National Performer of the Year Trophy Watch List.

The Saints have officially released Junior Galette and the pass rusher apparently went on twitter to bash his former employer. It’s believed that Galette used his girlfriend’s twitter account to say that Drew Brees’ arm strength is diminishing, wide receiver Marques Colston is washed up and he took some personal shots at Coach Sean Payton and his leadership style. Galette was released last week by the Saints as the team reportedly had gone tired of his act.

College football analyst Phil Steele says he expects LSU will surprise people in the upcoming college football season, but he still likes Alabama to win the SEC West. Steele says the Crimson Tide’s defense will be salty…

When the two played together at LSU, they reached the Final Four every year. The Lynx begin the W-N-B-A’s second half on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Sparks.

In college football…McNeese State’s Daniel Sams has been named to the 2015 FCS National Performer of the Year Trophy Watch List.

The Saints are expected to officially announce the release of pass rusher Junior Galette today. News broke on Friday that Galette was let go and news reports came out this weekend, he was a problem in the locker room.

Former LSU star Aaron Nola earned his first major league win yesterday as he helped the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 11 to 5. Nola threw seven plus strong innings and also drove in a run at the plate.
