Nicholls State has its first conference game under first-year head coach Tim Rebowe. The Colonels are at Incarnate Word, who lost to McNeese last weekend. In the SWAC, Grambling is at Alabama State and Southern hosts Jackson State.

The Saints offense could get a lift this weekend if running back CJ Spiller returns. Spiller has been sidelined by a knee injury, but practiced yesterday for the first time since undergoing surgery. Spiller hasn’t had much time to work with Drew Brees. But the veteran Q-B is optimistic the two can click right away….

Saints running back CJ Spiller returned to practice yesterday for the first time since undergoing knee surgery. Spiller did not participate fully, but it’s still a sign he maybe able to play this Sunday against Tampa Bay.

Reserve guard Norris Cole is reportedly staying with the Pelicans. The 26-year-old has accepted the Pels qualifying offer of three-million dollars. Cole was traded to New Orleans from Miami during the middle of the season and the Birds went 18-and-11 after Cole arrived in the Crescent City.

And Grambling State is mourning the death of Doris Robinson. The widow of legendary Grambling football coach Eddie Robinson Senior. Mrs. Robinson passed away yesterday. She was 96.

Southeastern Louisiana Coach Ron Roberts says he’s looking at resting his starting quarterback, D’Shaie Landor, for Saturday’s game at Ohio. Landor sprained his knee last week.

There’s sad news coming out of Grambling State. The wife of legendary football coach Eddie Robinson, Doris Robinson, passed away this morning. A university spokesperson says Robinson had been in the hospital after suffering from a recent illness. She was 96-years-old.

The Saints are back at work today getting ready Sunday’s home opener against Tampa Bay. Coach Sean Payton said today in a teleconference with reporters that he would like to see his defense put more pressure on the quarterback. New Orleans failed to register a sack last week against Carson Palmer and the Cardinals. This Sunday its rookie Jameis Winston, who will be making his first start on the road.

The UL Lafayette baseball program has released its 2016 schedule. The highlight of the non-conference schedule is a trip to Houston to play in the Houston College Classic. which also features Texas Tech, Rice and TCU. The Cajuns will also have to travel to South Alabama and Troy once league play starts.

Former All-SEC pitcher Randy Wiles has passed away after a brief battle with cancer. Wiles was a star at LSU in the early 1970s.

The Wildcats are 2-and-0, with wins over South Dakota and Texas-San Antonio. K-S-U has not allowed a touchdown yet this season and Bulldogs quarterback Jeff Driskel says they are a very sound on defense…

The Ragin Cajuns and ULM are off this weekend. UL Lafayette Coach Mark Hudspeth is thankful for the bye week, because gives his team time to deal with several injuries.

The Warhawks will get more work in with redshirt freshman quarterback Garrett Smith, who has been sharp through two games.

Based on what happened in the Mississippi State game, it appears LSU will have more success rushing the passer this season. The Tigers D-line only had 10 sacks in 13 games last year, but in the season opener, LSU’s defensive line recorded three sacks. One of the sacks was by new starting defensive end Lewis Neal. Defensive line coach Ed Orgeron on Neal and fellow starting defensive end Tashawn Bower…

The Black & Gold placed safety Rafael Bush on injured reserve, re-signed safety Kenny Phillips, and realeased veteran running back Tim Hightower.

In high school football…North Webster is the newly ranked number one team in Three-A, while Kentwood is the new number one in in One-A.

Because of a significant injury to safety Rafael Bush, the Saints have reportedly re-signed safety Kenny Phillips. Phillips hasn’t played a game in the NFL since 2012, but was with the Black and Gold during training camp. There’s a chance he could start this Sunday against Tampa Bay. New Orleans has also added running back Tim Hightower to the roster.

Coach Les Miles was asked if he would describe the game plan as conservative, but the Tigers head man said the offensive production would have been better if penalties did not negate 200 yards of total offense…

LSU Police announce they have arrested a 21-year-old Cut Off man for allegedly climbing a security fence and entering a secure area behind Mike the Sixth’s habitat on the LSU campus. It happened around the start of the McNeese State game, but Mike was in Tiger Stadium. Trent Paul Boudreaux, who is not an LSU student, was cited, but not booked in jail.

If the Saints want to reach the playoffs this season, they’ll need to do a better job in the red zone. They had four trips inside the Cardinals 20-yard line on Sunday, but came away with only one touchdown. Former Saints tight end Jimmy Graham was a weapon near the goal line, but he’s gone. Coach Sean Payton says they can’t use Graham’s departure as an excuse…

It looked like the Saints were on the verge of pulling off a come from behind win on the road, but a couple of fourth quarter touchdowns by the Cardinals resulted in a 31-19 loss for New Orleans. The Saints played several rookies and first-time starters. Rookie linebacker Hau-oli Kikaha forced a fumble and receiver Willie Snead made his NFL debut by reeling in a 63-yard pass from quarterback Drew Brees that led to one of four field goals by new kicker Dustin Hocker. But 1st-year cornerback Delvin Breaux was penalized four times. Coach Sean Payton says the Saints inexperience showed at times…

That second game is this Sunday against Tampa Bay. The Bucs had a brutal opening to the season as they were blasted by Tennessee 42-14.

On September 26th, get ready to wake up early to watch the Tigers. LSU’s road game against Syracuse in the Carrier Dome will kick-off at 11 AM and it will be televised by ESPN or ABC. LSU’s home opener is this Saturday against Auburn. Kick-off for that one is at 2:30.

LSU running back Leonard Fournette is must-see television. The Heisman Trophy candidate rushed for 159 yards and three touchdowns in the Tigers two-point win over Mississippi State on Saturday. Fournette had 28 carries, and Coach Les Miles says he has no problem giving him the rock…
