The Louisiana High School Coaches Association has hired Terence Williams as their new director. The former Redemptorist and Donaldsonville football coach is the second full-time director of the LHSCA, succeeding Gary Duhe who held the position for the past two years.

Former Dutchtown standout wide receiver Shelby Christy announced on twitter that he’ll be transferring to U-L Lafayette. Christy signed with Mississippi State out of high school, but didn’t play in the 2013 or 2014 seasons because of injuries. Due to NCAA transfer rules, he will not be able to play this season.

In last night’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game, Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout became the first player to hit a lead off home run in the game in 38 years as the American League defeated the National League 6-3. Trout also became the first player to take home the game’s MVP award two years in a row. Former LSU Tiger DJ LeMahieu went 0-2 at the plate for the National League. With the win, the American League champion will get home field advantage in this year’s World Series.

UNO has released its 2015-16 basketball schedule and it features the Privateers bringing back some non-conference in-state rivalries. UNO will face Tulane on December 2nd and UL-Lafayette on December 21st. The Privateers finished last season with an 11-18 record and their first Southland Conference Tournament appearance since 2010.

Former LSU Tiger star DJ LeMahieu will start at second base for the National League All-Star team in tonight’s midsummer classic. LeMahieu will bat ninth. On the season, he’s hitting .311 with four home runs and 35 RBIs.

At the SEC football Media Days, the newest coach in the league, Florida Jim McElwain met with reporters. He’ll bring his Gators to LSU on October 17th. McElwain takes over for the fired Will Muschamp, who struggled to put together a quality offense in Gainesville. McElwain says there’s talent on his roster to win games…

Tulane and H-L Bourgeois High School is mourning the loss of one of their star football players. JaJuan Dawson’s body was recovered from a Dallas-area lake last night in an apparent drowning. He was 37-years-old. Dawson was a three-time All-Conference USA selection in the late 1990s.

Louisiana Tech places four players on the preseason All-Conference USA Team, they are Vernon Butler, Kenneth Dixon, Trent Taylor and Xavier Woods.

The body of former Tulane and H-L Bourgeois High School football star JaJuan Dawson was found in a Dallas-area lake by dive teams last night. Dawson reportedly fell out of a rented boat during a family outing. Authorities say he was not wearing an life jacket. Dawson spent three seasons in the NFL.

Louisiana Tech places four players on the preseason All-Conference USA Team, they are Vernon Butler, Kenneth Dixon, Trent Taylor and Xavier Woods.

And McNeese State announces that three of their coaches have signed three-year contract extensions…football’s Matt Viator, men’s basketball Dave Simmons and women’s basketball Brooks Donald Williams.

The LSU football team will have two tough conference games in the month of September. On September 12th, the Tigers will visit Mississippi State and then on the 19th they’ll host Auburn. Auburn has a new quarterback, six-foot-five Jeremy Johnson from from Montgomery, Alabama. The junior signal caller says SEC defenses will have trouble slowing down Auburn’s offense…

Louisiana’s top high school football prospect is transferring to IMG Academy in Florida. Shea Patterson, who led Shreveport’s Calvary Baptist to two straight Division 3 state championships, will complete his high school career at the sports academy in Bradenton, Florida. Patterson is committed to play college football at Ole Miss.

Louisiana Tech defensive backs Adairius Barnes and Xavier Woods are on the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List. The award is given annually to college football’s best defensive back. ULM’s Mitch Lane is also on the list.

UL Lafayette’s Shawn Long has been named to the 2015 US Pan American Men’s basketball team, which will compete in Toronto later this month. Former LSU Tiger Anthony Randolph is also on that squad. Team USA will open the basketball competition by taking on Venezuela on July 21st.

The New Orleans Pelicans summer league team remains unbeaten in league play after their 89-83 win over the Brooklyn Nets yesterday in Las Vegas. Bryce Dejean-Jones lead the way for the Pels with 26 points followed by Seth Curry’s 20. The NBA Summer League’s single elimination tournament begins Wednesday.

The Major League Baseball All-Star game is tonight in Cincinnati and a former LSU Tiger will be on the field. Colorado Rockies second baseman DJ Lemahieu will start for the National League and bat 9th in the lineup. Lemahieu was a member of LSU’s 2009 national championship team.

The LHSAA and its officials have reached a tentative agreement that will prevent a work stoppage by referees this fall. Referees were asking for a raise and other things. Louisiana High School Officials Association President Paul LaRosa is not saying publicly whether the agreement struck on Sunday will result in more pay for refs…:

He says says they are holding off on releasing any details of the agreement to the public, until they can speak with their officials…

Officials threatened to strike and not show up when volleyball and football games started in August, unless they received a pay raise and other stipulations, like improved security at games.

The Walton County Sheriff’s office has released the arrest report of former Saints assistant coach Aaron Kromer, who was arrested on Sunday on a misdemeanor battery charge. The report alledges Kromer threw a boy to the ground and punched him in the face over an argument involving beach chairs near his home in Florida.

SEC football media days get underway today in Hoover, Alabama, which is the unofficial start to the college football season. Hundreds of reporters attend this event to hear from SEC coaches and players. LSU running back Leonard Fournette will be there and Braden Gall, with Athlon Sports, says the running back will find out what its like to be a star football player in the SEC…

Fournette, LSU football coach Les Miles, and two other players will go before the large contingent of media on Thursday.

Former Ruston High School football coach, Jimmy “Chick” Childress has died. Childress coached the Bearcats for 12 seasons and brought home four Class 4-A state championships in 1982, 1986, 1988, and 1990. Childress was inducted into the Louisiana High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. Childress was 83 years-old.

After a four hour meeting in Baton Rouge Sunday, it appears the high school football season will kick off without delay. The Louisiana High School Officials Association and the LHSAA have reportedly reached a tentative agreement that will put officials on the field in time for fall sports. Specific details of the agreement have not been released and it is unknown if official received any pay increase.

The Pelicans continue to roll in NBA summer league play after defeating Dallas 90-86 in Las Vegas. Seth Curry scored 25 points for New Orleans. Larry Drew II added nine points, five assists, and two steals as the Pels improve to 2-0. NBA Summer League play continues through July 20th.

The Pels have signed their first free agent of the offseason that wasn’t one of their own. Small forward Alonzo Gee has agreed to a two-year deal with New Orleans. The 28-year-old split time with Denver and Portland last season.

The executive committee of the louisiana High School Officials Association is set to meet tomorrow as referees across the state are planning to go on strike. The association’s president Paul LaRosa says they are seeking signed contracts with schools that stipulate pay and other conditions, including security at games. LaRosa says officials are tired of promises of more pay, which is why a work stoppage maybe necessary…

LaRosa says officials have only received two pay raises in the last 25 years, but a story in the Baton Rouge Advocate reports football refs have received five pay raises since 1990-91.

Tonight at John L Guidry Stadium at Nicholls State it’s the Iberiabank Air-it-Out and Papa John’s quarterback challenge, which is the marquee event of the Manning Passing Academy.

LSU linebacker Kendell Beckwith and safety Jalen Mills are on the Bronco Nagurski Watch List, which goes to the defensive player of the year. Louisiana Tech defensive back Xavier Woods is also on the Nagurski Trophy Watch List, while ULM defensive lineman Gerrand Johnson was named to both the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List and the Outland Trophy.

In the NBA….former LSU Tiger Jarell Martin has signed with the Grizzlies. Memphis drafted Martin in the first round last month after he averaged 14 points and seven rebounds last season at LSU.

NFL fans are mourning the death of former Alabama and Raiders quarter Ken Stabler. He died at the age of 69 after a losing a battle to colon cancer. Stabler played for three seasons for the New Orleans Saints before retiring after the 1984 season. The native of Foley, Alabama, threw for nearly 28-thousand yards in his 15-year career and led Oakland to a Super Bowl Victory.

LSU offensive tackle Vadal Alexander has been named to the Outland Trophy Watch List. Linebacker Kendell Beckwith and safety Jalen Mills is on the Nagurski Watch List. While ULM defensive lineman Gerrand Johnson was named to both the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List and the Outland Trophy.

Northwestern State has added former Edna Karr Star Glenn Irons to its roster. Iroans was a Class 4-A all-state selection in 2013 and signed at Nebraska out of high school. But Irons left the Cornhuskers program after Bo Pelini was fired.

NFL fans are mourning the death of Former Raiders and Saints quarterback Ken Stabler, who died as a result of complications associated with colon cancer.

The Pelicans have reportedly signed free-agent forward Alonzo Gee to a two-year contract worth 2.75 million dollars. Gee is 28-years-old. He played with five teams during his six seasons, averaging seven points and three rebounds a game, while shooting 33-percent from three-point territory.

Here’s the latest with the watch list in college football….LSU’s Vadal Alexander is a preseason nominee for the Outland Trophy, which goes to the best interior lineman in the country. Louisiana Tech defensive tackle Vernon Butler is on the Outland Trophy Watch List after registering 13.tackles for a loss last season.

ULM defensive lineman Gerrand Johnson is on both the Bronko Nagurski and Outland Trophy Watch List. Johnon led the Warhawks with 93 total tackles last season.

And Louisiana Tech safety Xavier Woods is also on the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List. The junior from West Monroe had six interceptions last season, two of them were returned for touchdowns.
