Because of Saturday night’s cancellation, LSU quarterback Brandon Harris missed out on some valuable reps to get himself ready for this Saturday’s game against Mississippi State. But Coach Les Miles says Harris prepared well for the Cowboys and expects that same level of preparation to continue for the new season opener…

Athletic Director Joe Alleva says they may notify fans as early as tomorrow on how ticketholders for the McNeese State game will be refunded.

Louisiana Tech had an impresive performance in its season opening win over Southern. The Bulldogs had nearly six-hundred yards of total offense in a 62-15 win over the Jaguars. But Tech has a quick turnaround this week, as they visit Western Kentucky on Thursday. The Hilltoppers upset Vandy last week.

The Saints are officially in game week. as they get ready for the season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. Coach Sean Payton did not speak with the media today, but we should get better idea later in the week on the availability of several injured players like running back CJ Spiller, safety Jairus Byrd, cornerback Brandon Browner and running back Khiry Robinson.

One other piece of NFL news…former Louisiana Tech Bulldog IK Enemkpali has reportedly signed with the Buffalo Bills practice squad.

ULM’s Rashon Ceasar has been named the Sun Belt Conference’s Offensive student-athlete of the week. Ceasar had a career-high 13 catches and a personal best 153 yards receiving in the loss to Georgia. Ceasar also caught two TD passes. The Warhawks are home this Saturday to host Nicholls State.

Southeastern Lousiaina’s Harlan Miller was named the Southland Defensive Player of the Week. The junior from Kentwood had two interceptions in the Lions season opening win over Northwestern State. In the latest F-C-S Coaches poll…S-L-U is ranked 18th, while McNeese is ranked 23rd.

ULM fell in their season opener to No. 9 Georgia in Athens 51-14. UL-Lafayette lost to Kentucky 40-33. The Wildcats scored a touchdown with less than a minute to go to escape with the 7 point win. Louisiana Tech beat Southern in Ruston, 62-15. Former Tech Coach Sonny Dykes and Cal beat Grambling State 73-14.

The New Orleans Saints have started toying with their roster. Safety Kenny Phillips has been waived along with defensive lineman Ashaad Mabry sources said Sunday. The Black and Gold take on the Cardinals on Sunday in Arizona at 3:05. Meanwhile, former Saints and Tulane QB Ryan Griffin has been claimed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Franklin Parish remains in shock over the death of 16-year-old Tyrell Cameron, who lost his life from an apparent broken neck sustained while playing football on Friday night. Matt Reynolds is the play-by-play man for the Franklin Parish Patriots and says Cameron was covering a punt and ran into a Sterlington player who was blocking for the returner…:

Tragedy struck at a high school football game in Winnsboro last night, as Tyrell Cameron, a sophomore for Franklin Parish, died from injuries he sustained while returning a punt in a game against Sterlington. Cameron was taken off the field on a stretcher in the fourth quarter and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The school tweeted out that Tyrell will live in the memory of those who loved him. They asked asked for prayers for his family.

Today is the first Saturday of the college football season. At six-thirty tonight in Tiger Stadium, LSU will host McNeese State. The Cowboys nearly upset Nebraska in Lincoln last year, but McNeese Coach Matt Viator says playing in Baton Rouge will be a bigger test for his team….

ULM is a big underdog heading into today’s game against ninth ranked Georgia. The Bulldogs are a 35-point favorite. In 2012, the Warhawks opened the season with a win over Arkansas. Georgia has a new starter at quarterback, Virginia transfer Greyson Lambert.

UL-Lafayette and Kentucky face off for the first time ever at six o’ clock in Lexington. The Cajuns have never defeated a team who plays in the SEC. Louisiana Tech opens its season by hosting Southern. The Jaguars are 0-7 against FBS schools. Southern will have its hands full with Tech running back Kenneth Dixon who is the school’s all-time leader in touchdowns.

Louisiana Tech’s former coach, Sonny Dykes, begins his third season at Cal by hosting Grambling State. The Tigers have lost all 13 games they’ve played against FBS teams since 1996. Cal has won 11 of its last 13 home openers. Kick-off is at 4 PM.

In the NFL…the Steelers traded former LSU punter Brad Wing to the New York Giants. Former Louisiana Tech star IK Ememkpali was cut by the Buffalo Bills.

Who will start at quarterback for UL Lafayette tomorrow night when the Cajuns visit Kentucky? It will be either Brooks Haack or Jalen Nixon and Coach Mark Hudspeth doesn’t plan on saying who will get the start prior to gametime.

Louisiana Tech cut the ribbon today on the 22-million dollar Davison Athletics complex. The 70-thousand-plus square building sits behind the south end zone. It features a weight room, locker room and coaches offices. The new facility has been described as a game changer for the program. The Bulldogs host Southern tomorrow night.

Big match-ups tonights in high school football. The LHSAA Game of the Week, which can be seen on Fox Sports New Orleans pits UHIGH versus Rummel. Also tonight…Teurlings Catholic hosts Calvary and North Webster is at Haynesville.

NFL teams are busy releasing teams as they get ready for the regular season. The Houston Texans have reportedly released former LSU running back Kenny Hilliard. The Dolphins have also said good bye to former Tiger Anthony Johnson, while the Steelers traded former LSU punter Brad Wing to the New York Giants.

And the NFL owners are reportedly discussing whether to change Commissioner Roger Goodell’s role in player discipline after losing in federal court over deflategate.

A big football weekend got started last night with the Saints finishing off the preseason without a win. Green Bay thumped New Orleans 38-10. There were some positives, Brandon Coleman who is fighting to be the Saints number three wide receiver, had four catches for 82 yards. Another wideout, Willie Snead, who is trying to make the team, had three catches for 31 yards, including a seven yard touchdown pass from Luke McCown. In the battle for third-string quarterback, Ryan Griffin was 7 of 13 for 56 yards, while Garrett Grayson was 8 of 19 for 71 yards and two interceptions.

Southeastern Louisiana began defense of its Southland Conference championship with a 34 to 20 win over Northwestern State. The Lions rushed for 438 yards. Quarterback D’Shaie Landor led the way with 125 yards on the ground.

And Duke dominated Tulane by beating the Green Wave 37 to 7 at Yulman Stadium.

It’s the opening weekend of the high school football season. Great game last night between Jennings and Kinder and it was Kinder who pulled off the victory 41-40. Tonight’s marquee match-ups are North Webster at Haynesville, Calvary Baptist hosts Teurlings Catholic, Parkview battles Catholic and Rummel visits UHIGH in the LHSAA Game of the Week.

There are some who LSU can be one of the four teams in the college football playoffs. We’ll see how they look tomorrow night when they host McNeese State in the season opener. Coach Les Miles says it’s nice to be recognized as one of the top teams in the country and the players believe they can compete with anyone…

The Saints face the Green Bay Packers tonight in the final preseason game of the year. It’s a big game for former Tulane quarterback Ryan Griffin. He’s expected to take plenty of snaps and needs a good performance to make the team. Kick-off is at 6 PM.

Griffin’s alma mater, Tulane, begins its season tonight as the Green Wave host Duke. Tulane went three and nine last season and lost to the Blue Devils.

In Natchitoches…Northwestern State will host Southeastern Louisiana. The Lions are the two-time defending champs in the Southland. They have a new quarterback this season, UL Lafayette transfer D’Shaie Landor. S-L-U Coach Ron Roberts says Landor is a gifted player….

Is it possible Saints Coach Sean Payton could get some of his 2012 Bountygate suspension salary back now that Tom Brady won his case against the NFL? Legal analyst Chick Foret says the bad news is that Brady was covered under the collective bargaining agreement and coaches aren’t. He says the good news for Payton is that he has the same agent that helped Brady, Don Yee…:

Payton did not earn any of his $7.5 million dollar salary when he was banned from the team for an entire season.

Les Miles is hoping his youngest son will one day play for him at LSU. Tigers recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson has offered Ben Miles a scholarship to play at LSU. Miles is a fullback for the Catholic High Bears in Baton Rouge. And Coach says the scholarship offer is deserving:

The Saints final preseason game is tonight. The starters are not expected to play, but it’s a big game for those seeking a spot on the 53-man roster. The battle for place kicker needs to be settled, Dustin Hopkins and Zack Hocker have been competing against each other since July. Wide receiver is also a position to watch. Josh Morgan, Willie Snead and Joe Morgan are on the bubble.

Coach Les Miles says redshirt freshman William Clapp will start at left guard against McNeese State on Saturday night. Miles says junior Josh Boutte (Boo-tay) will start at right guard, while true freshman defensive end Isaiah Washington will not play, because of an arm injury.

Former LSU basketball star Jarrell Martin has suffered a fracutured left foot and he undergoes surgery today. The Memphis Grizzlies first round pick hurt himself while working out with another player.

And former Saint Scott Shanle is joining Cox Sports Television as he’ll be part of CST’s studio broadcast team for Saints pre and postgame shows.

The college football season starts tonight as Southland foes Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana face each other in Natchitoches. SLU has won the league title the past two seasons. They’ve scored a bunch of points, they’ve also been good on defense, leading the conference in points allowed and yards given up the last two seasons. Demons Coach Jay Thomas says the Lions are still impressive on defense…

Tonight at 8:30, Tulane hosts the Duke Blue Devils. Last season Duke dominated the Green Wave, beating Curtis Johnson’s team 47-13. Tulane also had five turnovers in that game. Tanner Lee threw three interceptions in that game and he’ll start at QB tonight.

According to a report from the NFL network, Saints cornerback Keenan Lewis will be sidelined the next four to six weeks after undergoing hip surgery. The 29-year-old has been dependable as he’s started every game in his first two seasons in New Orleans. The injury to Lewis means Delvin Breaux and Brandon Browner could be your starting cornerbacks week one. But Browner is also dealing with an injury.

The LSU football team and the Head Health Network are partnering up to study how impacts to the head effect players. H-H-N President Curtis Cruz says 24 players will have sensors in their helmets this season and the sensors will relay information to the training staff when the player is involved in contact, to determine if the hit was serious enough to bring on a concussion…

He says this study will give training staff a much better handle on how to treat concussions.

The Ragin Cajuns are looking to pull off the upset this Saturday as they visit Kentucky. The Wildcats have a new offensive coordinator in Shannon Dawson, who was previously at West Virginia. UL Lafayette Coach Mark Hudspeth says they have an idea on what they’ll see on Saturday, but they are preparing for a few surprises….

And the Independence Bowl says last year’s game between Miami and South Carolina generated about 18 million dollars in an economic impact for the Shreveport-Bossier City area.

Bad news for the Saints defense as cornerback Keenan Lewis will reportedly miss the next four to six weeks after undergoing hip surgery. Lewis’ injury adds to what is already a big list of players on defense that are injured. Safety Kenny Vaccaro and cornerback Brandon Browner didn’t play last week against Houston. Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe has been hurt since the preseason opener and safety Jarius Byrd remains on the physically unable to perform list.

The Head Health Network is partnering with the LSU football team to study how impacts to the head effect players. H-H-N President Curtis Cruz says science is just now coming to terms with what is significant as far as a critical threshold and accumulation of smaller hits…

The study will equip 24 players’ helmets with sensors to monitor impacts.

Coastal Carolina will join the Sun Belt Conference. The Chanticleers will begin competing in the league next school year, but won’t begin playing football in the league 2017. The Sun Belt has been looking for a 12th member so they can equally split the east and west divisions so they make geographic sense.

ULM will face Nick Chubb and the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday. It’s the first of eight games on the road for the Warhawks. They’ll also visit Alabama on September 26th. ULM Coach Todd Berry admits he doesn’t have much control over scheduling, because the university needs the income from playing the big-time programs…

The Ragin Cajuns, who return ten starters from last year’s nine-win team, will be at Kentucky, who went five and seven lasts season. Coach Mark Hudspeth says he’s anxious to see how his first-time starters will perform inside Commonwealth Stadium…

The Saints had to reduce their roster to 75 yesterday. Among the players released…wide receiver Nick Toon, cornerback Terrence Frederick, and outside linebacker Ronald Powell, who was a fifth round pick last season. The Black and Gold also traded wide receiver Jalen Saunders to New England for a conditional draft pick. Saunders is not needed, because of the emergence of Marcus Murphy as a kick returner.

In other Saints news, rookie cornerback P.J. Willimas has been placed on the season ending injured reserve list. Williams, a third round draft choice, has a reported torn hamstring.

The Black and Gold also claimed former Miami Dolphins cornerback Sammy Seamster off of waivers. The 6-foot, 205 pounder played in two game last season for the Dolphins as a rookie.

In the big leagues, Miami crushed Atlanta 7-1, the Astros fell to the Mariners 7-5, and Texas outscored San Diego 8-6. Houston now holds a three game lead over the Rangers in the American League West.
