Western Kentucky quarterback Brandon Doughty threw for 441 yards and a touchdown as the Hilltoppers outscored Louisiana Tech last night 41-28. Bulldog quarterback Jeff Driskel threw for 357 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. This was the Conference USA opener for both teams. Tech will travel to Manhattan, Kansas to face Kansas State on September 19.

Southern scored 20 points in the first quarter and never looked back as the Jaguars routed Mississippi Valley State 50-13.

The NFL season got underway last night as the New England Patriots defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 28-21. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw for 288 yards and four touchdowns, three of those to tight end Rob Gronkowski.

The Saints open their regular season Sunday afternoon at Arizona. The Black and Gold are looking to rebound after a disappointing 7-9 campaign last season. Saints radio color analyst Hokie Gajan says preseason injuries have him concerned heading into the season opener…

The Franklin Parish High School football team returned to the gridiron last night for the first time since the death of Tyrell Cameron. Cameron died after colliding with another player during a punt return last Friday night. The Patriots fell to Wossman 43-18.

Brees and the Saints take on Arizona this Sunday. The Saints are a two-and-a-half point undergo. The NFL season gets underway tonight with Pittsburgh at New England.

It will be an emotional night in Wossman, where the Franklin Parish football team will play its first game since the death of Tyrell Cameron. Tyrell died last Friday after colliding with another player during a punt return. The game between Wossman and Franklin Parish was moved up to tonight, because visitiation for Tyrell is tomorrow night.

LSU and Mississippi State will have to wait until 8:15 on Saturday night to kick-it off. After waiting for last Saturday’s game to be cancelled, the Tigers know what it’s like to wait around. LSU defensive tackle Christian Lacouture says they’ll be ready to go…

Louisiana Tech will play its second game of the season tonight when they face Western Kentucky in a battle featuring the two best teams in Conference USA. The Hilltoppers held on to beat Vanderbilt last week, while the Bulldogs easily defeated Southern.

The Jaguars are also in action tonight as they take on Mississippi Valley State in a game that will be on ESPN-U at 6:30.

And on Fox Sports New Orleans, it’s the top ranked team in Class 3-A, Parkview Baptist, facing Riverside Academy in the LHSAA Game of the Week.

Bulldogs Head Coach Skip Holtz says there’s also two good quarterbacks in this game, Jeff Driskel for Louisiana Tech and the Hilltoppers Brandon Doughty, who was the nation’s passing leader last season…

Also tonight…Southern is at Mississippi Valley State. The Jaguars won this contest last season, 44-13. Kick-off for this one is at 6:30 and it can be seen on ESPN U.

The Saints continue to get ready for their regular season opener against Arizona on Sunday. It doesn’t look like, safety Jairus Byrd and running back CJ Spiller will play. Both did not practice yesterday. But cornerback Brandon Browner did practice, which is a good sign, especially with Kennan Lewis out for the first couple of games.

In other NFL news…the Panthers have reportedly signed linebacker Luke Kuechly to a five-year, 62-million dollar contract extension. The deal makes Kueckly the highest paid inside linebacker in NFL history.

LSU sophomore wide receiver Trey Quinn says he’s fully healthy for Saturday’s game against Mississippi State. Quinn was sidelined for a couple of weeks during fall camp because of a neck injury.

It will be an emotional night in Wossman tonight, where the Franklin Parish Patriots will take the field for the first time since Tyrell Cameron passed away. Cameron was playing on the punt team for the Patriots last week, when he suffered a broken neck after colliding with an opposing player. He died a short time later. Tonight’s Franklin Parish-Wossman game was moved up to Thursday, because the wake for Tyrell is tomorrow night.

Saints Coach Sean Payton expressed his dissatisfaction with quarterback Drew Brees jumping on a crocodile as he did in the NBC television show with Bear Grylls. Brees says he knew he would be out of his comfort zone by being out in the wild with snakes, but also didn’t feel he was going to seriously hurt himself

Payton does have a good sense of humor about the whole thing. Before Brees’ weekly press conference Payton put an alligator head on a chair next to where his star quarterback was speaking.

The Saints are getting ready for Sunday’s season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. Cornerback Brandon Browner and running Khiry Robinson both practiced yesterday according to the team’s injury report.

The Louisiana Tech football team faces a tough challenge on the road tonight as they battle Western Kentucky. Tech beat the Hilltoppers 59 to 10 last season in Ruston, but Western Kentucky has won six straight since then and Coach Skip Holtz believes his team is the underdog going into tonight’s match-up…

In other news…Saints safety Jairus Byrd will not play in Sunday’s season opener against Arizona. Byrd has reportedly been dealing with swelling in his knee that kept him from playing most of last season. But ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that Byrd should return to the lineup in either week two or three.

A New Orleans police department report says defensive end Cam Jordan is accussed of accosting a man and spraying champagne on a man and his girlfriend inside a nightclub early Sunday morning. But no charges have been filed.

LSU continues preparations for Saturday’s game against Mississippi State. The Bulldogs beat the Tigers 34-29 last season as State quarterback Dak Prescott rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown and threw for 268 yards and two more scores. The Hilltoppers were picked by the media to win the East Division, while the Bulldogs are the favorites to win the West division. Saints Coach Sean Payton is not happy with his quarterback after watching Monday night’s telecast of NBC’s Running Wild with Bear Grylls. In the episode, Drew Brees jumped on a live crocdile and stabbed it, plus he also rappelled a long way down into a cave. Payton says he thought Brees was going to be in some sort of “Sea World” type amtopshere and not the Panama wilderness…

In major league baseball action last night, former LSU pitcher Aaron Nola tossed seven strong innings in the Phillies five to nothing win over the Braves. Nola struck out a career-high seven and as he improved his record to six and two.

Sophomore quarterback Brandon Harris missed out on some valuable reps in a game atmosphere, because of Saturday night’s cancellation with McNeese State. So Harris will now get ready for his second road start of his career this Saturday against Mississippi State. It didn’t go very well for him at Auburn last year, but Harris says he’s more prepared this time around and the game comes easier to him…

Brooks Haack started against Kentucky, but it was Jalen Nixon who led the Cajuns on a furious rally to that resulted in UL Lafayette tying the game at 33 after trailing by 23 points.

The 14th ranked LSU Tigers are getting ready to face 25th ranked Mississippi State Saturday night in Starkville. The Bulldogs have been tough to be at home the last couple of years as they’ve recently expanded their stadium, plus there’s thousands of cow bells going off during the game. But Coach Les Miles is not worried about the cowbells..

Last year, Mississippi State came into Baton Rouge and beat the Tigers 34-29.

According to the NFL Network, Saints running back C.J. Spiller will not play in the team’s season opener this Sunday against Arizona. Spiller is recovering from minor knee surgery and should be back in uniform for Week 2. It appears that Khiry Robinson will return from injury in the near future. Robinson tweeted Monday that he was back in pads at practice.

Several Louisiana colleges have their home opener this weekend. The Ragin Cajuns, who nearly upset Kentucky last weekend, welcomes Northwestern State to Cajun Field. When UL Lafayette Coach Mark Hudspeth met with the media this week, he did not name a starting QB. Brooks Haack started against the Wildcats, but back-up Jalen Nixon led the Cajuns on quite a comeback. Saturday’s game can be seen on ESPN3.

Also this weekend, ULM hosts Nicholls State. It’s the season opener for the Colonels, while the Warhawks are coming off a 51-14 loss to Georgia. McNeese State hosts Incarnate Word, Grambling takes on Bethune-Cookman, while Southeastern Louisiana hosts Florida Tech.

NBA playoff seeding will now be based solely on team records. The league’s Board of Governors unanimously approved the change Tuesday. The ruling means a division championship no longer guarantees a top four seed in the conference playoffs. Teams in each conference will now be seeded from one to eight based solely on their won-loss record.

Mississippi State is ranked 25th in the latest AP poll that came out today, while LSU is ranked 14th. Ohio State is number one and Alabama is number two.

Louisiana Tech quarterback Jeff Driskel is the Louisiana Sports Writers Association offensive player of the week. Driskel threw four touchdown passes and for 274 yards in a blowout win over Southern.

The Saints are off today, but they are still looking at making some adjustments to their 53-man roster. The Black and Gold reportedly brought in a couple of kickers, Nick Novak and Caleb Sturgis for a tryout. And the Saints also had former New York Giant and Indianapolis Colt Hakeem Nicks in for a workout.

Louisiana Tech has a short week of preparation for its Conference USA opener against Western Kentucky. But Bulldogs quarterback Jeff Driskel should have a lot of confidence heading into this game. H was 12-of-15 for 274 yards in last Saturday’s win over Southern. Driskel also threw four touchdown passes. Driskel and the Dogs take on Western Kentucky Thursday at 7 PM.

The Saints are reportedly still looking at kickers. Seventh round pick Zach Hocker is the lone kicker on the roster, but the Black and Gold are also bringing in a couple of kickers for tryouts today. Former Charger Nick Novak and ex-Dolphin Caleb Sturgis both are getting a look by New Orleans after losing training camp battles with their respective former teams.

There are a couple of newly ranked number one teams in the high school football polls. Southern Lab is now ranked number one in One-A after blanking Bogalusa this past Friday. The Jaguars will host the Division Two state champions University High this Friday. Parkview Baptist also moved to the top spot in 3A. The Eagles rallied to beat Catholic High this past Friday and they’ll visit Riverside on Thursday in a game that will be televised on Fox Sports New Orleans.

Former LSU pitcher Louis Coleman has rejoined the Kansas City Royas after being called up from the team’s Triple-A team in Omaha. With Coleman up in the big leagues, LSU now has ten former players on Major League rosters.

Mississippi State went on the road for its season opener and beat Southern Miss.

LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva says they may notify fans as early as today on how ticketholders for the McNeese State game will be refunded.

The Saints are officially in game week. as they get ready for the season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. Coach Sean Payton did not speak with media Monday, but we should get better idea later in the week on the availability of several injured players like running backs CJ Spiller and Khiry Robinson, safety Jairus Byrd, and cornerback Brandon Browner.

Driskel had the most efficient performance of any quarterback in the country going 12-for-15 for 274 yarda and four touchdowns in the Bulldog’s win over Southern. ULM’s Rashon Ceasar has been named the Sun Belt Conference’s Offensive student-athlete of the week. Ceasar had a career-high 13 catches, a personal best 153 yards, and two touchdown catches in the Warhawks loss to Georgia. ULM hosts Nicholls State Saturday.

The Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week is Southeastern Louisiana’s Harlan Miller. The junior from Kentwood had two interceptions in the Lions season opening win over Northwestern State. Southeastern hits the road to take on Ohio University Saturday, while the Demons travel to face UL-Lafayette.

In the latest F-C-S Coaches poll…S-L-U is ranked 18th, while McNeese State remains at number 23.
