And there’s concerns about quarterback Drew Brees throwing shoulder. Brees took a big hit in the first half and admitted it affected a few of his throws. Payton said today it’s too early to tell if Brees will play this Sunday against Carolina. A report from the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says sources within the team are concerned Brees could miss several games.

After his career-high 228 yard and three touchdown performance against Auburn, LSU running back Leonard Fournette is considered a favorite to win the Heisman after three weeks of the college football season. But Fournette says he’s not thinking about postseason awards…

Fournette was named the co-offensive player of the week in the SEC. Offensive tackle Vadal Alexander was named the SEC Offensive lineman of the week as he helped the Tigers rack up 485 total yards of offense in the win over Auburn.

And the SEC announced today that LSU’s next home game against Eastern Michigan will kick-off at 6 PM on October third.

There is some sad news to report involving the LSU football program. Former reserve tight end Tyler Edwards was found dead over the weekend in his car. Authorities in Monroe say he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.He was 26-years-old.

Ohio State remains ranked number one in the A-P poll. Michigan State is second, Ole Miss is tied with TCU for third and Alabama has fallen to 12th.

The Saints are licking their wounds after a 26-19 loss to Tampa Bay. It was another tough day for Drew Brees and the New Orleans offense. Their longest passing play was 24 yards to Marques Colston. Brees took a big hit in the first half and the veteran QB admits the hit on his shoulder affected a few of his throws, but wouldn’t use that as an excuse.

Louisiana Tech is recovering from an exhausting triple-overtime loss to Kansas State on Saturday. A 31-yard touchdown pass on 3rd and 16 is what ended up beating the Bulldogs. Tech is now 1-and-2 on the season and will face Conference USA foe F-I-U this Saturday.

After taking last Saturday off, UL Lafayette and ULM are back in action this weeknd. The Cajuns will host Akron, while the Warhawks will take on a Crimson Tide club that’s feeling salty after losing to Ole Miss.

Northwestern State lost 62-13 to Mississippi State last weekend, but the Demons get back into Southland play this Saturday as Northwestern will host Central Arkansas.

McNeese State is 2-0 in the league after beating Stephen F Austin 28-14. Quarterback Daniel Sams was really productive as he rushed for 164 yards and a touchdown and he threw for 134 yards and another score. McNeese this Saturday will host Mississippi College.

LSU’s Leonard Fournette is the biggest star in college football after his jaw dropping performance before a national TV audience in Saturday’s 45-21 win over Auburn. Fournette had a career-high 228 yards rushing and three touchdowns. The sophomore says he had a blast running around and through Auburn tacklers…

Fournette’s showing through two games has him as an early front-runner for the Heisman Trophy.

Tulane quarterback Tanner Lee threw for 277 yards and a touchdown as the Green Wave blasted Maine 38-7. Ohio defeated Southeastern Louisiana 35-14, Incarnate Word beat Nicholls State 20-10, McNeese State got past Stephen F. Austin 28-14, and Mississippi State crushed Northwestern State 62-13.

It took Kansas State three overtimes to defeat Louisiana Tech 39-33. The Bulldogs held a 10-6 lead at the half, but the Wildcats came back to take the lead late in the fourth quarter. Tech kicker Jonathan Barnes’ 45 yard field goal as time expired sent the game to extra time. The Bulldogs couldn’t answer Kansas State’s touchdown in the third overtime. Tech quarterback Jeff Driskel had another impressive outing, throwing for 314 yards and one touchdown.

The Saints are 0-2 on the season after losing to Tampa Bay 26-19 in front of home crowd at the Mercedes Benz Superdome. The Saints had a brief lead in the 2nd quarter, but the Buccaneers took control in the 3rd quarter and three New Orleans turnovers were too much to overcome. Coach Sean Payton says the Bucs were the better team…

It will be hot and sweaty inside Tiger Stadium on Saturday, with high temperatures in the mid 90s. LSU is asking its fans to drink plenty of water and water bottles will be sold at discounted prices tomorrow.

A win for LSU will give them a 2-0 record in the SEC. After a solid win on the road last week, Coach Les Miles believes his team has enough talent to go a long way this season…

It will be interesting to see how many times running back Leonard Fournette will carry the ball on Saturday. Against Mississippi State, Fournette rushed the ball 28 times for 159 yards.

The other big game in the SEC West is between second ranked Alabama hosting 15th ranked Ole Miss. The Rebels beat the Crimson Tide last year.

Saints running back CJ Spiller is listed as questionable for Sunday’s home opener against Tampa Bay. Spiller returned to practice this week for the first time since undergoing knee surgery. Cornerback Keenan Lewis, safety Jairus Byrd and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe have been ruled out for the game against the Bucs. Tampa wide receiver Mike Evans is listed as questionable.

Jameis Winston will be making his first start on the road in the NFL on Sunday. Saints Linebacker David Hawthorne on how they’ll try to stop the former Heisman winner…

Saints running back CJ Spiller is not saying whether he’ll play this Sunday against Tampa Bay. Spiller returned to practice this week after undergoing knee surgery last month. Meanwhile, the Saints defense is getting ready to take on a rookie quarterback in Jameis Winston. Winston’s pro debut was not very good as he completed 16 of 33 passes for 210 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Could LSU quarterback Brandon Harris have a break out performance tomorrow against Auburn. Harris had a bad performance against the War Eagles in his first collegiate start last season, but Coach Les Miles says Harris is a much different player now…

Louisiana Tech heads to Kansas today where they’ll play Kansas State. The Wildcats are 2-and-0, with victories over South Dakota and Texas San Antonio. So far this season, K-S-U has not allowed a touchdown and the only points they gave up came on a 51-yard field goal last weekend. Kick-off is at two o’ clock.

In other action this weekend….first-year Nicholls State coach Tim Rebowe has his first Southland game as the Colonels visit Incarnate Word. McNeese State is at Stephen F Austin, while Southeastern Louisiana visits Ohio and Northwestern State travels to Starkville to play Mississippi State.

In the SWAC…Southern has its home opener as the Jaguars face Jackson State and Grambling State visits Alabama State. Tulane is home this weekend and they’ll take on Maine.

It appears New Orleans Saints running back CJ Spiller isn’t giving any hints as to when we will see him on the field. He had minor surgery on his knee in August and returned to practice this week. Spiller says they’re taking it one day at a time is unwilling to offer any clues as to whether or not he’ll be able to play in Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The New Orleans Pelicans have re-signed restricted free agent guard Norris Cole. Cole came to the Pelicans in February from Miami as part of a three way trade that involved Phoenix. In 28 games with the Pels last season, Cole averaged nearly 10 points and over three assists per game. Terms of the deal were not released.

Reserve guard Norris Cole is reportedly staying with the Pelicans. The 26-year-old has accepted the Pels qualifying offer of three-million dollars. Cole was traded to New Orleans from Miami during the middle of the season and the Birds went 18-and-11 after Cole arrived in the Crescent City.

In high school football tonight….the third ranked team in Class Two-A, Calvary Baptist visits the ninth ranked team in Five-A, the Byrd Yellow Jackets. That game can be seen on Fox Sports New Orleans as its the LHSAA Game of the Week.

LSU leads the NFL with 40 active players on opening day rosters. That’s three better than Miami of Florida. Ten of LSU’s 40 players are defensive backs.

And Louisiana Tech leads Conference USA in players in the NFL on opening week rosters. There are eleven former Bulldogs in the league.

And Grambling State is mourning the death of Doris Robinson. The widow of legendary Grambling football coach Eddie Robinson Senior. Mrs. Robinson passed away yesterday. She was 96.
