Saints Quarterback Drew Brees, who was limited once again during yesterday’s practice, continues to says he is confident he’ll be able to take the field on Sunday at Carolina despite a bruised rotator cuff. If Brees is not cleared to play, veteran backup and former Louisiana Tech star Luke McCown will lead the Black & Gold. The Saints and the Panthers kickoff at noon Sunday and the game will be televised on Fox.

LSU’s only Heisman trophy winner Billy Cannon is super excited about Leonard Fournette’s chance to win college football’s most prestigious award. Fournette is considered a front-runner to win the Heisman after running for 387 yards and 6 touchdowns in the first 2 games of the season. Fournette has also rushed for 100 yards in four consecutive games, dating to last season, scoring nine touchdowns in those contests. Cannon says he hopes he can watch Fournette receive the Heisman…

Can ULM beat Alabama again? These two schools meet on Saturday afternoon in Tuscaloosa in a rematch of the 2007 game that saw the Warhawks upset Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide 21-14. ULM Coach Todd Berry says that game won’t have an impact on what happens tomorrow..

In high school football action last night: Teurlings Catholic upended Breaux Bridge 14-7, Byrd crushed Captain Shreve 42-13, New Iberia sailed past Lafayette 35-14, Vermilion Catholic beat Highland Baptist 44-13, it was Loreauville over Delcambre 38-14, and Southern Lab destroyed Ascension Catholic 46-7.

Also on the Saints injury report today is Linebacker Danell Ellerbe who is listed as limited. Cornerback Keenan Lewis is also listed as limited for the first time this week. The team confirmed today that guard Jahri Evans, Jarius Byrd and Brandin Cooks did not practice on Thursday. The Saints and the Panthers kickoff at noon Sunday and the game will be televised on Fox.

Syracuse is planning to start a walk-on junior college transfer versus the 8th ranked LSU Tigers Saturday. Zack Mahoney would be the third different starting quarterback for the Orange as the other two have been injured. Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer likes what Mahoney brings to the field…:

LSU pitching coach Alan Dunn was named the National Pitching Coach of the Year by Collegiate Baseball. Coach Paul Mainieri is always singing the praises of Dunn who has molded many All-American pitchers in Baton Rouge including Alex Lange.

Tonight on the New Orleans Saints, LHSAA Game of the Week. Arkansas commitment Cole Kelley leads Teurlings Catholic into Breaux Bridge to take on the Tigers. Teurlings has won the last four meetings between these longtime rivals in Acadiana. Kick-off on Fox Sports New Orleans is at 7 PM.

The University of Akron has made a change at quarterback ahead of Saturday’s game against UL-Lafayette. Coach Terry Bowden announced that sophomore Tommy Woodson will make his third career start, and first this season, against the Ragin Cajuns. The Zips lost in Woodson’s two starts last season, with the quarterback turning the ball over six times. However, Woodson threw for 207 yards and a touchdown last week in Akron’s win against Savannah State.

Syracuse continues their preparations to face eighth ranked LSU Saturday at the Carrier Dome. So far SEC defenses have not been able to slow down Tiger running back Leonard Fournette this season. Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer understands the challenge his defense faces, but he’s not the only talented skill position player on LSU’s offense…

Not only is the Syracuse football team preparing for LSU, the city of Syracuse is getting ready for the thousands of Tiger faithful expected to head their way for Saturday’s game. The Syracuse Convention and Visitors Bureau reports that some bars will be opening as early as 8am to accommodate fans and plan to have enough alcohol on hand ahead of kickoff. It’s reported that about 7,500 LSU fans are planning to make the trip to the “Emerald City”.

A top priority for the Warhawks will be to slow down Bama running back Derrick Henry. The junior is averaging nearly seven yards a carry. This is ULM’s first trip to Tuscaloosa since 2007, when the Warhawks upset the Crimson Tide 21-14.

The Ragin Cajuns Athletic Foundation says donations have topped the two million dollar mark for a second consecutive fiscal year. The 2015 amount comes on the heels of a successful year for Ragin Cajuns athletics that included a fourth straight bowl victory.

Northwestern State Coach Jay Thomas says he’ll continue to play multiple quarterbacks this Saturday as they face Central Arkansas. So far this season, Joel Blumenthal has thrown for the most yards and has completed 65-percent of his passes. Both teams are looking for their first Southland Conference win of the season.

Saints Coach Sean Payton told reporters on a teleconference this morning that Quarterback Drew Brees is day-to-day. Payton would not elaborate anymore on Brees’ injured rotator cuff. If Brees can’t play this Sunday against Carolina, Luke McCown would get the start. Payton said he won’t talk about hypothetical situations.

LSU’s defense has played well under its new defensive coordinator Kevin Steele. Steele says the transition has been smooth….

The Tigers are at Syracuse this Saturday. Because of injuries, the Orange will likely start a walk-on at quarterback. Hi sname is Zack Mahoney and was listed as the team’s fifth string quarterback when the season started. Its also possible that Austin Wilson and AJ Long will see some snaps as well.

The Ragin Cajuns are getting ready to play the Akron Zips, who are 1-and-2 and coming off a 52-9 win over Savannah State. UL Lafayette is ninth in the country in rushing yards per game, averaging just over 300 yards a contest. Coach Mark Hudspeth expects the Zips to try and take away their running game…

It’s been reported that orthopedic surgeon and LSU alum Dr. James Andrews examined the MRI scans of Brees’ injured shoulder and confirmed the original diagnosis that the veteran QB has a bruised rotator cuff. This means there’s a chance number nine will play against the Panthers, depending on how well his shoulder responds to the treatments he’ll get this week.

LSU could face Syracuse’s third, fourth and even fifth string quarterbacks in Saturday’s game at the Carrier Dome. The Orange’s starter suffered an achilles injury in the season opener and then freshman Eric Dungey suffered a helmet-to-helmet hit last week and is not expected to play Saturday. Tigers defensive coordinator Kevin Steele says Syracuse is more of a running team anyways…

There are wide-ranging reports on the health of Saints quarterback Drew Brees’ shoulder. The NFL Network said Brees could miss several games, while ESPN’s Ed Werder said that treatment on his injured shoulder will determine if he can play this Sunday at Carolina. Saints sideline reporter Kristian Garic says an M-R-I showed no structural damage, so now it depends on how Brees’ shoulder responds…

If Brees can’t play this Sunday against Carolina, former Louisiana Tech standout Luke McCown will get the nod.

Louisiana Tech kicker Jonathan Barnes has been named a Lou Groza Award “Star of the Week”. Barnes connected on three field goals and three extra points in the Bulldogs’ triple-overtime loss to Kansas State Saturday. The Baton Rouge native currently leads all Bulldog scorers with 37 points this season. Tech looks to get back in the win column this Saturday when they host Florida International at Joe Aillet Stadium. That game will be televised on Fox College Sports beginning at 1:30PM.

After a career-high 228 yard and three touchdown performance against Auburn, LSU running back Leonard Fournette is considered an early favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. Les Miles was asked about the Fournette for Heisman Talk and the Lsu Head coach says that’s not his focus at the moment…
