The LSU-Alabama game is still over a week and a half away and the hype is building. Tigers running back Leonard Fournette appeared on SEC Now with Peter Burns and played a game of “fact or fiction.” Leonard was asked if LSU will beat Alabama this year and Fournette said fact.

And Michael Casagrande of the Birmingham News, Press-Register and Huntsville Times, says he’s been verbally threatened on twitter by a reverend after he suggested that LSU has a chance to beat the Crimson Tide on November fifth.

There are signs that Saints cornerback Delvin Breaux is getting closer to returning to action. Breaux broke his fibula in the season opener and since then he’s been drinking a lot of milk in the hopes returning sooner than later. Breaux says he tested his leg out during defensive back drills and is waiting for the team’s medical staff to allow him to return to practice on a full-time basis. New Orleans hosts Seattle this Sunday.

Louisiana Tech is getting ready to play Rice this Saturday at Joe Aillet Stadium. The Owls won their first game of the season last week as they defeated Prairie View A-and-M 65-44. Bulldogs Coach Skip Holtz says the Owls show a lot of different looks on offense and they snap the ball quick…

Louisiana Tech is 5-3 overall, 3-and-1 in Conference USA and the leader in the Western Division

In the Southland, Southeastern Louisiana is 4-1 and in third place in the league. The Lions host Central Arkansas this Saturday. The Bears are 5-0 in league play. In the SWAC Western Division, Grambling and Southern are tied for first, with 4-0 records. Southern is at Alcorn this Saturday, while Grambling hosts Arkansas Pine-Bluff.

LSU and Alabama will once again get the only CBS prime-time spot of the season, kicking off in Tiger Stadium at 7pm on November 5th. This will be the sixth straight year CBS has aired LSU-Bama at night and the 10th year the network puts on this highly anticipated game in college football. Both 19th-ranked LSU and top-ranked Alabama have open dates on Oct. 29 leading up to the annual clash of SEC Western Division standouts.

LSU running back Leonard Fournette and center Ethan Pocic were named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week and Offensive Lineman of the week, respectively. Fournette rushed for 284 yards on 16 carries in the Tigers win over Ole Miss. Pocic led the team with 12 knockdown blocks.

In Tiger basketball news, eight former LSU players are on NBA rosters. Tim Quartermann has made the Portland Trail Blazers roster as an undrafted rookie, but the Dallas Mavericks cut Keith Hornsby.

More conference honors: In the Southland, McNeese State’s kicker Gunnar Raborn was named Special Teams player of the week. In the SWAC, Grambling quarterback Devante Kincade is the Offensive Player of the Week, and the Tigers defensive back Joseph McWilliams is Special Teams player of the week.

Louisiana Tech looks to make it five victories in a row when they host the Rice Owls on Saturday. Rice has really struggled this year as they just 1-and-6. But Bulldogs Coach Skip Holtz says don’t look at the records…:

For the sixth consecutive year, the LSU-Alabama game on November 5th will have a nighttime kick-off. CBS will televise two games that day and it has decided to air the Tigers clash with the Crimson Tide at 7 PM.

LSU running back Leonard Fournette was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week. After missing the last two games, the New Orleans native rushed for 284 yards and three touchdowns on just 16 carries.

There’s been some who have suggested that Fournette should just sit out the rest of the season, so he doesn’t risk a serious injury that could impact his future NFL career. Fournette says he wanted to be on the field with his teammates…

Ten penalties and two turnovers kept the Saints from winning on the road yesterday as they dropped a 27-21 contest to the Kansas City Chiefs. New Orleans is 2-and-4 on the year and in third place in the NFC South, two games back of first-place Atlanta. The Falcons lost 33-30 in overtime. Also in the NFC South, Tampa Bay improved to 3-3 with an easy 34-17 win over San Francisco. Up next for the Saints, they host Seattle. The Seahawks tied Arizona six to six last night.

The Pelicans have finalized their roster by waiving foward Alonzo Gee and keeping six-year veteran guard Lance Stephenson. Gee will still receive one-point-two million dollars from the Pels. General Manager Dell Demps says they decided on Stephenson, because they needed a playmaker with Tyreke Evans and Jrue Holiday not available to start the season. The season opener is Wednesday night at home against Denver.

LSU running back Leonard Fournette said he’s not 100-percent an ankle injury, but you would never know it, by how he ran the ball in Saturday’s 38-21 win over Ole Miss. Fournette set a single-game rushing record at LSU with his 284 yards on the ground. Fournette sat out the two previous games and Coach Ed Orgeron says it was good to have Fournette back…

Fournette has an extra week to rest the ankle as the Tigers do not play again until November 5th against Alabama.

In other action on Saturday, Louisiana Tech won its fourth straight as the Bulldogs defeated FIU 44-24. New Mexico clobbered ULM 59-17, Elijah McGuire rushed for two touchdowns and 112 yards as the Cajuns defeated Texas State 27-3. Tulsa easiliy defeated Tulane 50-27.

The Saints simply made too many mistakes in order to win on the road yesterday as the Black and Gold lost to Kansas City 27-21. New Orleans was penalized 10 times and had two critical turnovers. Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium is one of the toughest venues to play in the NFL for opposing teams. The crowd seemed to affect the Saints, but Payton says it’s not the reason why they lost…

The Saints host Seattle this Sunday. The Seahawks and Arizona played to a strange six-six tie last night in Phoenix.

The Pelicans tip-off a new season on Wednesday night when they host the Denver Nuggets. The team announced today that is releasing Along Gee and keeping Lance Stephenson. Stephenson averaged seven points a game in the preseason.

Saints Quarterback Drew Brees threw for 367 yards and three touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to overcome several mistakes that led to a 27-21 win for Kansas City. The biggest sports story in the nation right now is that the Cubs are going to the team’s first World Series in 71 years. Chicago and the Indians begin play tomorrow night in Cleveland. It’s reported that the the combined 174 years without winning the World Series between the two franchises is the most in MLB history.

Louisiana Tech got their fourth straight win Saturday with a 44-24 victory over FIU. The loss snapped the Panthers three game winning streak.

Gambling State defeated Mississippi Valley State 59-10 on Saturday for the Tigers’ fourth straight W.

UL-Lafayette keeps bowl hopes alive with a 27-3 win over Texas State. Southern pounded Arkansas Pine Bluff 49-17. McNeese beat in-state rival Northwestern State 48-27. SLU defeats Houston Baptist 37-3. Nicholls State fell to Sam Houston 38-21. Tulane fell to Tulsa 50-27. ULM lost to New Mexico 59-17.

 

 

07:30 LRN Sportscast October 22nd

LSU and Ole Miss meet again tonight in Tiger Stadium for an 8:15 PM kickoff. Running back Leonard Fournette returns to the field tonight for the Tigers after missing the last two games with an ankle injury. Ole Miss has had trouble stopping the run this year, while Rebels Quarterback Chad Kelly goes up against an LSU defense that’s allowed just six touchdowns this season.

Louisiana Tech’s offense has been tough to slow down lately and the Bulldogs are looking for their fourth straight win when they visit F-I-U. The Panthers are 3-0 in Conference USA and have not lost since Ron Cooper took over as interim head coach.

Nicholls State hosts Sam Houston State at 2:30. The Bearkats are ranked number one in the FCS and have won nine straight over the Colonels, who are off to their best start in the Southland since 2005.

Also in the Southland…Southeastern Louisiana is at Houston Baptist and Northwestern hosts McNeese for homecoming.

If UL Lafayette wants to play in a bowl game this year, they’ll need to get a win tonight in San Macros. The 2-and-4 Cajuns visits a 2-4 Texas State team. The Bobcats rank 124th in the nation in total defense.

ULM is at New Mexico as redshirt freshman Will Collins will make his first start at quarterback for the Warhawks.

Also today, Tulane is at Tulsa, Grambing is at winless Mississppi Valley State, Southern hosts Arkansas Pine Bluff and Louisiana College hosts Belhaven at 6 PM.

The Saints bring the NFL’s top passing attack to Kansas City, where they’ll visit the Chiefs tomorrow. New Orleans has won two straight. K-C is 3-2 and beat Oakland last week, but lost two starters on defense for the year in that game because of injuries, linebacker Justin March-Lillard and defensive end Allen Bailey.

High School football last night…Neville thumped Tioga 41-3, St. Thomas More walloped Teurlings Catholic 42-14 and Catholic rallied to beat St. Amant 31-28.

Saints linebacker Stephone Anthony was added to the injury list for Sunday’s game at Kansas City and he will not play against the Chiefs, because of a quad injury. Daniel Lasco, Sterling Moore and Andrus Peat have all been ruled out. Left tackle Terron Armstead is listed as questionable.

Louisiana Tech’s high powered offense is in Miami for tomorrow night’s game against FIU. Bulldogs quarterback Ryan Higgins ranks second in the country in passing yards per game. Wide receiver Trent Taylor has 75 catches. Carlos Henderson had 326 receiving yards in one game last week and Jarred Craft has rushed for over 700 yards. But Higgins says none of the players are competing for the numbers….

Ole Miss brings the best pass offense in the SEC to Baton Rouge on Saturday night when they visit the LSU Tigers. The Rebels have five receivers who have caught 15 passes or more, but they had some critical drops in a loss last week to Arkansas. Rebels Coach Huge Freeze expects them to bounce back…:

Saints left tackle Terron Armstead says he is going to try and play this Sunday against the Chiefs. Armstead has been out with a knee injury and hasn’t played since week two, and the Saints are especially thin at that tackle spot with Andrus Peat going down in the first half of the game last week against the Panthers. New Orleans is looking to run their record to 3-3.

Both teams have won three in a row, but the Bulldogs have averaged 56 points a game in their last two contests. In the NBA, the Pelicans final preseason game was a heartbreaker last night as the team blew a 23 point lead, and eventually fell 114-111 to the Orlando Magic in overtime at Amway Center. It’s the fifth loss in a row for the Pels. Anthony Davis returned and finished with 33 points and 13 rebounds. The Pelicans will open the 2016-17 season at home against the Denver Nuggets on Oct. 26.

The Saints are getting ready for their trip to Kansas City, where they’ll face the 3-and-2 Chiefs. Kansas City’s defense is led by Marcus Peters. who has five interceptions in five games this season. Last year, the former Washington standout had eight picks as a rookie. New Orleans Quarterback Drew Brees says he’s well aware of the 23-year-old cornerback…

UL Lafayette will visit a struggling Texas State team on Saturday night. The Bobcats have lost four of their last five games. They have also allowed 40 points in five of their six games this season. Coach Mark Hudspeth says they’ve spent more time this week trying to improve the Cajuns…

Grambling State has announced that head football coach Broderick Fobbs has received a two-year contract extension. His current deal was set to expire after this season. Fobbs will not receive an increase in pay, but his assistant coaches will get paid more. Grambling is 19-8 since 2015.

The Saints play in one of the most difficult venues for opposing teams in the NFL this Sunday when they visit the Kansas City Chiefs. Saints Quarterback Drew Brees has yet to throw for over 300 yards in a game on the road this season, but knows New Orleans offense can be just as good on the road as it is at home if they execute…:

Saints offensive tackle Terron Armstead is back but limited at practice. Armstead hasn’t played since week 2 of the season after suffering a knee injury in the loss to the Giants. Cornerback Sterling Moore did not practice Wednesday. Moore has been one of the better performers in New Orleans secondary.

The Ragin Cajuns look to snap a three-game losing streak on Saturday night when they visit Texas State. UL Lafayette is coming off a 24-0 loss to Appalachian State and Coach Mark Hudspeth says it’s obvious they have to figure out a way to put some points on the board…:

The Monroe-News Star is reporting that Grambling football coach Broderick Fobbs has received a two-year contract extension. Grambling is 4-1 on the season and 3-0 in SWAC play this year. They are tied with Southern for first place in the West division. The Jaguars are home to take on Arkansas Pine Bluff on Saturday.
