Tonight at 6:35, LSU will face Northwestern State in the final non-conference game of the regular season. The 5th ranked Tigers are 7-and-6 in midweek games this year. Coach Paul Mainieri says it’s been disappointing they’ve lost to many of their state foes, but overall it’s been a good season….

The Tigers are 35-17 on the season and Mainieri believes LSU has put itself in the converstation to be a national seed.

Also on the baseball diamond tonight, 28th ranked McNeese State hosts Houston and Southeastern Louisiana faces 17th ranked Southern Miss in Biloxi.

Former Texas Tech receiver Jonathan Giles has announced he intends to transfer to LSU. Giles will not be eligible to play this season, but he’ll have two years of eligibility starting in 2018. Giles also considered Florida State and Oregon. He caught 69 passes for 1,158 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns last season.

Former LSU Tiger Davon Godchaux has signed a rookie contract with Miami. The Dolphins selected the defensive lineman in the fifth round last month.

And former Cajuns wide receiver Al Riles has signed with the Colts, while ex UL Lafayette linebacker Otha Peters inks a deal with Seattle.

Good news for Louisiana Tech basketball fans. ESPN’s Jeff Goodman reports Bulldogs guard Jacobi Bykins has withdrawn from the NBA draft and he’ll return for his senior season.

Tonight is the NBA draft lottery and the Pelicans have a four-percent chance of landing a top three-pick.

LSU hosts Northwestern State tonight in the final non-conference game of the season for both teams. The Tigers will start freshman right-hander Todd Peterson on the hill. The Florida native will make his third start of the season and Coach Paul Mainieri says Peterson will audition to be the team’s fourth starter in the postseason…:

LSU has won eight of its last ten and they now lead the SEC West by one game over Mississippi State, who they’ll face for a three-game series starting on Thursday.

Tigers junior-right hander Alex Lange was named the SEC Pitcher of the Week, after firing a five-hit shutout to defeat 13th-ranked Auburn last Thursday. Nicholls State redshirt senior pitcher Mike Hanchar has been named Southland Conference Pitcher of the week. The six-foot-five southpaw threw his first career complete-game shutout against UNO last week.

The McNeese State baseball team, tabbed as the No. 28 club in the country by Collegiate Baseball, takes on Houston today. The Cowboys hold a 1 ½-game lead over Southeastern in the Southland Conference standings.

The Lions square off against No. 15 Southern Miss today in a neutral site contest in Bilxoi.

UNO takes on Tulane in New Orleans.

New Orleans Pelicans owner Tom Benson and Executive Vice President Mickey Loomis announced Monday that they are going to keep coach Alvin Gentry and general manager Dell Demps. Loomis said this is the best course of action moving forward. Both Demps and Gentry are under contract through next season.

The Saints have made about a dozen roster moves, adding offensive players heading into voluntary off season non-contact practices.

The LSU football team has picked up a commitment from transfer receiver Jonathan Giles from Texas Tech. Giles caught 69 passes for over 1100 yards and 13 touchdowns as a sophomore last year. He’ll have to sit out 2017 before having two years of eligibility.

The LSU baseball team is in first place in the SEC West, one game ahead of Mississippi State, entering the final week of the regular season. The Tigers will host Northwestern State tomorrow and Coach Paul Mainieri says they’ll start freshman right-hander Todd Peterson on the hill and hope he can go five innings. Mainieri says Peterson is auditioning to be a fourth starter in the post season.

LSU’s Alex Lange has been Snake EC Pitcher of the Week. Lange tossed a five-hit shuout against Auburn last week. Nicholls State redshirt senior pitcher Mike Hanchar has been named Southland Conference Pitcher of the week. A statement from the New Orleans Pelicans says general manager Dell Demps and head coach Alvin Gentry will be back next season. Gentry is heading into his third season, while Demps has been the GM since 2010 and the franchise has made two playoff appearances.

LSU Head Football Coach Ed Orgeron appeared on the SEC teleconference today and discussed why he called for competition at starting quarterback, even though Danny Etling started 10 games last season. Orgeron says they have a new offense and wanted to give everyone a chance, but “O” admits that Etling is the clear cut favorite…

Three teams from Louisiana will be in the NCAA Baton Rouge softball regional. LSU is the top seed, while the Cajuns will be the second seed and McNeese State is the third seed. Louisiana Tech will be in the Tuscaloosa Regional.

After sweeping Auburn, LSU baseball leads the SEC West with an 18-9 record. The Tigers own a one-game lead over Mississippi state after losing two of three from Georgia. The Tigers will square off against the Bulldogs for a three-game series starting on Thursday in Starkville. It will be the final three games of the season.

McNeese State continues to lead the Southland Conference with a 20-7 record. The Cowboys are coming off a non-conference sweep of Creighton and they’ll finish the regular season with a home game against Houston on Tuesday and then a three-game series against Lamar.

Southeastern Louisiana swept Central Arkansas to finish off conference play with a 20-10 record. The Lions will take on Southern Miss on Tuesday in Biloxi.

The Ragin Cajuns took two of three from Texas State, ULM has lost 10 in a row after getting swept by Troy and Louisiana Tech is tied for third in the Conference USA standings after sweeping Marshall.

Former LSU star Alex Bregman blasted a grand slam last night as the Astros defeated the New York Yankees 10-7. Bregman’s uniform number is two and before the game the Yankees retired Derek Jeter’s number two jersey. The win for Houston puts them seven games ahead of Texas for first place in the American League West.

The Advocate newspaper is reporting Pelicans General Manager Dell Demps and Head Coach Alvin Gentry will return next season. Demps has been on the job since 2010 and the team has made two playoff appearances during that time. Gentry will be entering his third season as head coach.

LSU played some of their best baseball here in the home stretch and wrapped up a sweep of Auburn this weekend with a 9-1 win in game three. The Tigers have won eight of its last nine Southeastern Conference games to climb atop the SEC West. They’ll host Northwestern State tomorrow night.

UL-Lafayette clinched their Sun Belt Conference series following a 4-3 victory over Texas State. This keeps the Cajuns in second place in the SBC West Division.

ULM fell to Troy for all three games. Tulane got an 11-4 conference win over Houston. Nicholls State beat in-state foe UNO 8-7. Southeastern edged Central Arkansas 3-2. Louisiana Tech got the win over Marshall 6-4.

McNeese State completed a three-game sweep of Creighton and continue to lead the Southland with a 20-7 record.

Grambling State clinched the western division title on Sunday and will be the No. 1 seed in the west entering the SWAC baseball tournament. The Tigers did this by way of Southern defeating Texas Southern Sunday and the Jaguars are also headed to post-season play.

Last week it was reported Saints center Max Unger suffered a foot injury that required surgery. At the team’s rookie mini camp, Coach Sean Payton said the goal is to have Unger back by Week 3 of the preseason. Payton said he was aware of reports calling for Unger to possibly miss the start of the regular season and his response was, “Don’t get me started.”

Former LSU star Alex Bregman is making big news in the baseball world today as last night he clubbed a first-inning grand slam, the first of his pro career, to help the Astros beat the Yankees 10-7 in New York. And it was all in front of his idol, former Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter who had his No. 2 jersey retired Sunday. Bregman also wears No. 2.

The LSU softball team has been selected as the NO. 13 overall seed for the NCAA Championships and will host the Baton Rouge Regional this weekend with UL-Lafayette, McNeese State and Fairfield. All three teams come in as conference champions. Louisiana Tech softball, also conference champions, will be headed to the Tuscaloosa Regional as the No.3 seed.

Michael Papierski’s (Puh-pear-ski’s) two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning was the difference as the LSU Tigers defeated Auburn five to three to win the series. LSU had a 3-0 lead, but Auburn tied it by scoring one run in the 6th inning and two more in the 7th inning and then Papierski hit the two run shot to win the game. Zach Watson also hit a two-run homer for the Tigers and Zach Hess was the winning pitcher, while Hunter Newman earned his 8th save. LsU goes for the sweep this afternoon at noon. They remain a half-game back of Florida and Mississippi State for the overall in the SEC.
The Ragin Cajuns scored two runs in the eighth to beat Texas State 8 to 7. A throwing error by the Bobcats was the difference in this game. JOe Robbins drove in three runs and Dylan Moore earned the win in relief.
Troy trounced ULM nine to one.

 
For the 18th time this season, Louisiana Tech came from behind to win a game. Jordan Washam had two doubles to lead the way in a 7-5 win over Marshall. Casey Sullvian was the winning pitcher, his first of the season.
In the Southland, McNeese defeated Creighton five to one, The Cowboys snapped a one-one tie by scoring four runs in the 9th inning. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak.
Northwestern State knocked off Abilene Christian 10-3. Demon hitters drew 12 walks. UNO upended Nicholls State six to two. Shawn Semple won his eighth game of the season.
southeastern Louisiana and Central Arkansas were rained out, they’ll play a doubleheader at 2 PM today.
The state high school baseball tournament wraps up today. Yesterday, Elizabeth, Choudrant, Grace Christian and Ascension Episcopal all won state championships last yesterday.
Today’s Five-A title game will be West Monroe versus Central, the 4A title game is Tioga versus Neville. The two-A title contest is Sterlington versus Lakeside.

When Alex Lange is on top of his game, LSU is tough to beat. The junior right-hander threw a complete game shutout last night as the Bayou Bengals blanked the Auburn Tigers four to nothing. Lange struck out nine and allowed only one runner past second base all night. Game 2 is tonight at 7.

The Saints began their rookie minicamp today. Former Breaux Bridge and LSU star Travin Dural starts his quest to make the team as an undrafted free agent.

An early morning crash in the Village of Tangipahoa claimed the lives of two people, including the former Mayor of the Village of Tangipahoa and retired NFL player Michael Dyson, according to State Police. Trooper Dustin Dwight says the 48-year-old Dyson was traveling down US 51 on his motorcycle at a high rate of speed…:

LSU Head Coach Ed Orgeron is not expecting four-star defensive tackle signee Tyler Shelvin to join the team in June, because he’s not been academically cleared to participate.

At the state baseball tournament, the big upset happened in Class 3A as fifth seeded Iowa advanced to the title game by blanking top seeded Brusly 12 to 0. Iowa will face South Beauregard in Saturday’s title game.

Alex Lange was oustanding last night as he helped the LSU Tigers secure a four to nothing victory over the Auburn Tigers. Lange threw his second straight complete game as he allowed just five hits and struck out nine. The win moves LSU within a half game of Florida and Mississippi State for the overall lead in the Southeastern Conference. Game two is tonight at 7 PM. Jared Poche will get the start, after receiving his degree this morning. Keegan Thompson starts for Auburn. He has an ERA of 2.08.

In other action tonight….Louisiana Tech looks for its fifth consecutive series victory as they host Marshall for the final home series at J-C Love Field.

The Ragin Cajuns are also home this weekend to face Texas State. UL Lafayette has lost back-to-back series for the first time since 2015.

In the Southland, Southestern Louisiana will host Central Arkansas. The Lions are in third place in the league standings, the Bears are in fourthe place. Nicholls and UNO are on the bubble to make the Southland tournament. They play each other this weekend. Game one is tonight in Thibodaux.

State Police say the 48-year-old Dyson was driving his motorcyle at a high rate speed when he hit a vehicle that was backing from a parking spot along U-S 51. The driver of that other car was also killed. Dyson played for the Browns and Ravens in the 1990s and caught 353 passes.

The Atlanta Falcons have signed former LSU Tiger Duke Riley. The Dirty Birds selected Riley in the third round of last month’s draft.

Four-star LSU defensive tackle signee Tyler Shelvin will not be with the team this summer as he’s not been academically cleared to join the program.

Parkway quarterback Justin Rogers lists LSU, TCU and North Carolina as his top three schools. Rogers plans to announce his verbal commitment on May 31st. According to rivals-dot-com, TCU is the front-runner.

Louisiana Tech has landed a commitment from West Feliciana athlete Davon “Smoke” Harris. He’s five-foot-six, 170 pounds and also had an offer from Tulane.

An SEC West showdown between LSU and Auburn begins tonight at Alex Box Stadium. The Tigers are 15-9 in league play, one game back of Mississippi State for first place in the West. Auburn is one game back of the Tigers at 14-10.

It’s the final home weekend series of the regular season for LSU. Shortstop Kramer Robertson will be one of several seniors who will be recognized during during senior day activities on Saturday….

Kramer and the Tiger hitters will face some quality starting pitching in this series. Tonight, junior left-hander Andrew Mitchell will take the mound, tomorrow it’s junior right-hander Keegan Thompson and Saturday it will be Casey Mize, who has an ERA of 1.39. First pitch is at 6:30 and it can be seen on ESPN Two.

At the state baseball tournament in Sulphur, Ouachita Christian has advanced to the Division Three state championship game by beating St. Charles Catholic seven to one. O-C-S will face Riverside on Saturday in the state title game. Fourth seeded Riverside routed top-seeded Opelousas Catholic seven to two.

In Division Two, eighth seeded St. Louis Catholic thumped University High 11 to 6. The Saints will play Teurlings Catholic on Saturday at noon. The Rebels won easily over St. Thomas More seven to one.

Conference softball tournaments are underway….LSU plays Tennessee tonight in Knoxville. The Tigers held off a late rally to beat Missouri six to five yesterday.

In the Sun Belt, the Cajuns blanked South Alabama six to nothing. Alex Stewart struck out a dozen hitters to improve her record to 23-3.

Louisiana Tech plays FIU in the Conference USA Tournament this afternoon.

In the Southland…sixth seeded Northwestern State stayed alive with a four to one win over Sam Houston State. The Demons will face Central Arkansas tonight at 5:30.
