The seventh ranked LSU women’s basketball team returned to the win column last night with a 79-63 win over Georgia. Flau’Jae Johnson had 21 points, including a 35-footer at the buzzer to end the third quarter.

The Cajuns men’s basketball team got a nice win on the road as U-L Lafayette defeated Troy 72 to 69. Louisiana Tech also a winner on the road… over Middle Tennessee 85 to 74.

A new city has emerged as a candidate for an NHL expansion team – New Orleans. NHL Network analyst – and former NHL goalie – Kevin Weekes says an ownership group had a productive meeting with Deputy NHL Commissioner Bill Daly. Weekes says while the identity of this ownership group is currently unknown, they are hockey people from top to bottom.

New Orleans joins a long list of cities pursuing NHL expansion teams, including Houston, Atlanta, Quebec City and Phoenix.

No official word from the Saints, but it’s been reported that head coach Kellen Moore has hired Doug Nussmeier as offensive coordinator. Moore and Nussmeier have coached with each other for several years and Nussmeier is the father of LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.

In baseball…LSU begins a series today against Omaha. First pitch at Alex Box is at 4 PM. And the Ragin Cajuns will host 23rd ranked Nebraska. ULM is also home against Houston Christian.

Louisiana Tech baseball is in Hattiesburg this weekend for a three-game series against former Conference USA rival Southern Miss. The Bulldogs opened the season by sweeping a four-game series from Maine. Tech Coach Lane Burroughs likes how well his team played defensively

Southern is mourning the death of Safeties coach Sean Wallace who died of pancreatic cancer. Wallace was also an outstanding player for the Jaguars and is in the school’s athletic hall of fame as he helped Southern win a Black College National Championship in 1993.

In a move that many expected, Saints coach Kellen Moore has reportedly chosen Doug Nussmeier as his offensive coordinator. Moore and Nussmeier worked together in Dallas, with the Chargers and were on the same staff in Philadelphia that just won the Super Bowl. Host of the Locked on Saints podcast, Ross Jackson, says Moore will call plays, but Nussmeier will have a big role in offensive game planning…

Nussmeier is a native of Oregon, played college football at Idaho and the Saints drafted him in 1994 in the fourth round. He is also the father of LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.

Trey Holly is trying to get back with the LSU football team. For that to happen, he must be cleared of a weapons charge he faces for a shooting that took place last February in his hometown of Farmerville. Holly has said he was not involved in the incident that resulted in two people being shot. A trial date of July seventh has been set and if Holly is found to be not guilty, he’s expected to be back with the LSU Tigers.

No firm decisions were made on the future of the College Football playoffs after a meeting in New Orleans involving the athletic directors of the SEC and Big 10. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey says he’s in favor of changing the seeding for next season, no automatic byes, seed the teams one through 12 based on their. After the 2025 season, the C-F-P could expand to 14 or 16 teams and it’s likely the SEC will move to a nine-game conference schedule to match the nine conference games the Big ten is playing.

Multiple media outlets are reporting that Saints head coach Kellen Moore has hired Doug Nussmeier as his offensive coordinator. Nussmeier is following Moore to the Big Easy as both were in Philadelphia last season, helping the Eagles win the Super Bowl. They will work to improve an offense ranked 30th in total yards last season.

LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker told on-3-dot-com that linebacker Harold Perkins will play the STAR position. By playing the star position, Perkins will be asked to rush the passer and play in coverage. Attempts to play him at inside linebacker did not work out.

A big hockey game tonight as the USA takes on Canada in the 4 Nations Face-off championship. Governor Landry tweeted about it and in his post, the governor says it’s time for Louisiana to have an NHL team. ESPN reported  a group met with NHL officials about bringing an expansion team to NOLA.

The seventh ranked LSU women’s basketball team look to get back in the win column tonight after last Sunday’s loss to Texas. The Lady Tigers host Georgia at 8 PM. Aneesah Morrow is listed as questionable with an undisclosed injury on the injury report.

 

Also at 8 PM tonight, the Louisiana Tech men’s team begins a three-game road trip tonight at Middle Tennessee.

A trial date is set for a suspended LSU running back in connection with a shooting a year ago. Andrew Greenstein reports.

SEC and Big Ten athletic directors met in New Orleans yesterday to discuss the future of the college football playoff, which is expected to expand to 14 to 16 teams for 2026. No firm decisions have been made. But based on reports, there seems to be agreement that seeding needs to change. Get rid of the automatic byes and seed teams 1 through 12 based on their ranking.

Kevin Weekes of ESPN says a group has been met with NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly about bringing a professional hockey team to New Orleans. It’s unknown who exactly met with NHL officials. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has not publicly committed to the idea of expanding to 33 teams, but it’s believed the league would like to have a team in the Phoenix area again.

It was just too cold for LSU baseball to play at Nicholls last night. So the two teams will play in Baton Rouge on Monday instead. Instead of the Tigers hosting the Colonels on April eighth. That game will now be played in Thibodaux

Tulane and Southeastern Louisiana played in those miserable conditions yesterday and the Green Wave won five to three to improve 4-and-0.

Basketball…the ULM men’s team fell to 7-and-21 on the season with a loss to Texas State 80 to 63.

The seventh ranked LSU Lady Tigers host Georgia tonight. Double-double machine Aneesah Morrow is listed as questionable on the SEC injury report. She hasn’t missed a game in four seasons.

Suspended LSU running back Trey Holly will stand trial July 7th  for his alleged role in a shooting that injured two people in his hometown of Farmerville last February. Holly is facing one felony count of illegal use of a weapon or dangerous instrumentality.  Holly has not been able to participate in team-related activities since his arrest, but he is still going to school at LSU, according to Small. If Holly is found not guilty, he’s expected to be reinstated.

The Tigers won their fourth straight game to start the season yesterday by beating Southern 13 to 1. LSU continues to be excellent on the mound. Conner Ware started yesterday and threw three shutout innings. Coach Jay Johnson…

LSU begins a tough stretch of games to close out the regular season when it hosts second ranked Florida on Saturday.

Saints head coach Kellen Moore is filling out his staff as he’s reportedly hired two more assistant. Scott Tolzien will be the Black and Gold’s new quarterbacks coach. Moore and Tolzien worked together in Dallas. Also, Joel Thomas is returning as running backs coach. He spent last season with the Giants. Thomas was on Sean Payton’s staff from 2015 to 2018 and during that time the Saints led the NFL in rushing touchdowns.

Zac Cowan came out of the bullpen and pitched three innings, allowing an unearned run. Ethan Frey hit his first home run at LSU. The Tigers are at Nicholls tonight.

The Colonels lost to Omaha five to two last night. The Ragin Cajuns scored seven runs in the seventh inning to defeat Texas Southern 14 to 11. J-R Tollett was the winning pitcher as he allowed one run in four innings of relief and struck out a career-high five hitters.

Jake Haggard drove in four runs as ULM trounced Grambling 17 to 2.

New Saints head coach Kellen Moore continues to fill out his staff as he’s reportedly hired two more assistant coaches. NFL insider Ian Rapoport says Scott Tolzien will be the Black and Gold’s new quarterbacks coach. Moore and Tolzien worked together in Dallas. Tolzien is described as a rising young coach. Sources say McMahon will also have a larger NIL budget to help bring better players to Baton Rouge. McMahon was asked to respond to the report at a press conference yesterday…

LSU’s early signing recruiting class announced in December is ranked as the sixth best in the country. Tonight, the Tigers host South Carolina. The Gamecocks are winless in SEC play.

A lot of college baseball during the day in Louisiana today. LSU hosts Southern at 2 PM. Grambling is at ULM for a 2 PM first pitch. The Ragin Cajuns host Texas Southern at 3 PM, and McNeese was scheduled to play at top ranked Texas A-and-M tonight, but that game has been cancelled because of inclement weather.

The McNeese Cowboys improved to 15-and-1 in Southland Conference play with an 88 to 82 win over Southeastern Louisiana last night. The victory clinched a double-bye in the league’s postseason tournament. Coach Will Wade…

McNeese can clinch at least a share of the Southland regular season title on Saturday with a win over A-and-M Corpus Christi.

Also in the Southland, Nicholls upended UNO 78 to 62 as the Colonels got 19 points from Byron Ireland. Northwestern State lost at home to Lamar 75 to 65.

Southern maintained a three-game lead for first place in the SWAC with a 66 to 57 win over Texas Southern last night. The Jaguars are at Grambling this Saturday. The Tigers routed Prairie View A-and-M 70 to 48 last night.

LSU will reportedly bring back men’s basketball coach Matt McMahon for a fourth season and increase the NIL budget in the hopes better players will lead to more wins. The Tigers are 2-and-10 and in 15th place in the SEC. McMahon was asked on Monday about the report that he will not be fired after this season…

LSU will host South Carolina tonight at 8 PM. Trey’ Dez Green will not play in the game. McMahon says Green, who is also on a tight end on the football team, needs to focus on academics.

The McNeese Cowboys dribbled past Southeastern Louisiana 88 to 82 in Hammond last night to move within one of game claiming at least a share of the Southland Conference title. McNeese had five players in double figures led by Javohn Garcia, who had 18 points. Joe Charles added 17.

Lamar hit eight three-pointers in the second half and defeated Northwestern State 75 to 65. Nicholls completed a season sweep of UNO by beating the Piraveters 78 to 62. Byron Ireland had 19 points to lead the way.

Southern and Grambling were winners in the SWAC last night. The Jaguars defeated Texas Southern 66 to 57 to improve to 12 and 1, while Grambling pounded Prairie View A-and-M 70 to 48.
