The Saints take on the Jaguars tonight in Jacksonville for the first preseason game of the year. You won’t see much of Drew Brees, or the other stars, but Saints Analyst Mike Detillier says it’s a chance for some unheralded players to make a name for themselves. Guys like QB Taysom Hill, who Detillier says could be the guy to back up Drew if he works on one thing…

It’s a big game for running backs Shane Vereen, Terrance West, Boston Scott and Trey Edmunds. The Black and Gold is looking for one of them to step up and fill the void of Mark Ingram, who is suspended for the first four games of the regular season.

LSU has suspended linebacker Tyler Taylor after they learned he was arrested in May for allegedly participating in a pawn shop burglary. Taylor had 32 tackles as a freshman last season.

At LSU’s practice yesterday, junior Justin McMillan and sophomore Myles Brennan took turns taking snaps with the first unit during drills that were open to the media. After practice, Coach Ed Orgeron gave an update on the quarterback situation…

Bad news for the ULM Warhawks, senior cornerback Rhoy Williams has suffered a torn ACL and he’ll miss the upcoming season. Williams played in 12 games last season and had 38 tackles.

NBA…the Pelicans will open the 2018-19 season by visiting Houston on October 17th in a game that will be televised by ESPN. The Pelicans have also signed six-foot-11 center Jahlil Okafor. Philadelphia used the 3rd overall pick in the 2015 draft on the former Duke standout, but he only averaged six points a game last season.

The New Orleans Pelicans will open the 2018-19 season by visiting the Houston Rockets on Wednesday October 17th in a game televised by ESPN. New Orleans will not play on Christmas Day, but they will be a part of the NBA’s lineup on Martin Luther King Junior Day as the Pels will travel to Memphis to face the Grizzlies in a game that will be televised at 4:30 on TNT. The rest of the schedule will be released at a later date.

The Pels have reportedly signed center Jahlil Okafor. The former Duke standout was the number three pick overall in the 2015 draft, but after a good rookie season, he hasn’t lived up to the expectations. In 22-games with the Nets last season, Okafor averaged just six points a game.

Former LSU wide receiver Jarvis Landry was the star of last night’s Hard Knocks episode on HBO. Landry went on a 98-second rant letting his fellow wide receivers on the Browns know that if they are not hurt, they should be practicing.

LSU’s first opponent, the Miami Hurricanes, will be without tight end Michael Irvin the Second, as he’s suffered a torn M-C-L. Irvin is the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin. Irvin the Second is expected to miss four months, after catching nine passes for 78 yards last season.

A big position battle is at cornerback opposite of Greedy Williams. Based on how reps are distributed, Kary Vincent is running with the first group along with Williams.

Louisiana Tech has off from practice today. Bulldogs Coach Skip Holtz says it’s too early to tell if they have another freshman stud on this team. Last year, cornerback Amik Robertson emerged as an one of their top players on defense, leading the team with five-interceptions.

Former SEC all-freshman defensive tackle Ed Alexander was not seen at practice during the portion that was viewed by the media. Head Coach Ed Orgerons said Alexander had suffered a minor setback after missing spring practice.

LSU’s baseball schedule for 2019 has been released and the Tigers will open the season versus ULM February 15th at Alex Box Stadium. The Bayou Bengals first road game will be February 20th against Northwestern State. The Tigers will also visit Texas and play the Longhorns during the first weekend of March. SEC play begins March 15th at home against Kentucky.

Veteran infielder Chris Reid is no longer with the team. Coach Paul Mainieri told Tiger Rag magazine that it’s a numbers issue as they didn’t have room for Reid on their 35-man roster. Reid hit .267 last season.

ULM softball coach Corey Lyon has resigned to become an assistant coach at Marshall. Lyon was 111 and 115 in four seasons in Monroe.

It lists former first round pick Sheldon Rankins and former fourth round pick David Onyemata as co-starters. It’s a sign Onyemata could be out playing Rankins during the first couple weeks of training camp.

Former Destrehan standout Glen Logan has a chance to start at left end for LSU this season. Logan, who almost transferred a year ago, says he’s become a much smarter player because of fellow defensive end Rashard Lawrence…

And LSU should learn by the end of the week regarding the status of junior cornerback Kristian Fulton. His appeal to the NCAA to end a two-year suspension for allegedly tampering with a drug test will be heard on Thursday in a conference call. Fulton’s attorney expects a decision from the NCAA on Thursday or Friday.

In the FCS Top 25 preseason poll, McNeese is ranked 17th, Nicholls is 18th.

Last year at this time, Saints running back Alvin Kamara was just hoping to make the roster. Now he’s one of the more popular players in the league. He’s also in a new Drake Video and is in this month’s edition of G-Q magazine…

Louisiana Tech will practice this morning in full pads for the first time during fall camp. Coach Skip Holtz says they will focus more on the running game, now that the pads are on.

The LSU Tigers have added three-star small forward Aundre Hyatt to the incoming recruiting class that’s ranked fourth in the nation.

The Saints have released wide receiver Brandon Coleman, with a failed physical designation. Coleman started training camp on the physically unable to perform list as he continue to recover from a neck injury suffered in last season’s playoff loss to Minnesota. Coleman had 23 catches last year, but there’s a lot of depth at wide receiver this season.

Former Louisiana Tech standout and Zachary native Boston Scott is trying to make the team as either a back-up running back or on special teams. Scott says as a way to get ready for his NFL career, he spent a week with Drew Brees and his trainer in San Diego….

Former LSU safety Rickey Jefferson has been added to the Saints 90-man roster. Jefferson was with the team during the rookie mini-camp.

LSU men’s basketball coach Will Wade has added another player to his roster for the upcoming season. Six-foot-seven Aundre Hyatt is expected to sign with the Tigers after visiting the Baton Rouge campus this past weekend. He’s from White Plains, New York and is a three-star prospect. Hyatt averaged 18 points a game at a prep school in Virginia last season.

Ohio State announces its investigation will be completed in the next 14 days into what Urban Meyer knew about the domestic abuse allegations against former Buckeye assistant football coach Zach Smith.

Saints rookie running back Boston Scott says he’s looking to make the team anyway possible through offense or special teams, possibly as a returner. The former Louisiana Tech standout has been compared to Darren Sproles and Scott says that’s a humbling comparison….

Former LSU safety Rickey Jefferson has been added to the Saints 90-man roster. Jefferson signed a reserve-futures contract with the Saints after the draft, but he was released after the rookie minicamp in May.

The Saints have also released receiver Brandon Coleman after he failed a physical. Coleman suffered a neck injury in the playoff loss to Minnesota. During camp, Coleman has been on the sidelines working with trainers, but still needs more time to get healthy.

The LSU football team hits the practice field for the first time on Saturday, but a projected starter on the offensive line will not be out there. Coach Ed Orgeron has announced right guard Ed Ingram has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of a team policy. Coach O doesn’t know how long the suspension will last. The coach says junior college transfer Damien Lewis will move to right guard at the start of camp.

There are plenty of new faces on offense. Ohio State graduate transfer Joe Burrow takes his first snaps in Purple and Gold and there’s new running backs on campus, Tae Provens and Chris Curry. Orgeron is excited to see them in action…

The Saints will get a change of scenery on Sunday when they hold a practice at Tulane’s Yulman Stadium. There will be a fan festival on campus, that will include, music, food and cold beverages.

Former Texas A-and-M running back Kendall Bussey has transferred to Nicholls State. The New Orleans native is eligible to play this season and has two years of eligibility left. He rushed for 237 yards last season after a standout high school career at Newman in New Orleans.

LSU football reports for camp today and expectations are lower than normal. The Tigers are picked finish 5th in the SEC West and ranked 24th in the preseason coaches poll. Not everyone is sold on new offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger, but Coach Ed Orgeron says LSU’s offense set several records when Ensminger called plays in 2016

Former LSU Tiger Eric Reid is expected to work out for the Tennessee Titans today. The 26-year-old is looking for a job after the 49ers decided against re-signing him. Reid claims NFL teams are staying away from him, because of his national anthem protests. Former Saint Kenny Vaccaro will also visit the Titans.
