Great comeback win for the eighth ranked LSU baseball team last night as they were down six to two in the fifth inning, but scored five runs in the fifth inning and won eight to six. Daniel Dickinson hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning and Steven Milam hit a two-run blast. Zac Cowan continues to be great out of the pen as the right-hander threw four scoreless innings and struck out seven for his third save. Cowan says he’s pitching with confidence…

Also tonight at 6:30, the LSU Lady Tigers will take on North Carolina State in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. The two teams played in a tournament in the Bahamas in November and LSU won by 17. The Wolfpack are the A-C-C regular season champs.

 

For LSU football to reach its potential next season, the Tigers defensive secondary needs to improve. Defensive Coordinator Blake Baker says safeties Dashawn Spears and Javien Toviano are developing nicely…

LSU men’s basketball freshman guard Vyctorius Miller is entering the NCAA Transfer portal. The former four-star recruit averaged nearly nine points a game last season.

In high school basketball news…Plainview’s Zequan Lewis has been named the Class C boys basketball player of the year. Lewis averaged 25 points a game as the Hornets won their first state championship in 60 years. Simpson sophomore Olivia Edwards is the Class C girls player of the year. Edwards averaged 16 points as the Lady Broncos won their first state title since 2001.

LSU’s starting pitcher Kade Anderson did not have it as he gave up five runs in 4.1 innings, but Zac Cowan was outstanding as he threw four scoreless innings and struck out seven. Same two teams meet again at 6:30 tonight.

IN other action…Louisiana Tech hosts Kennesaw State, the Ragin Cajuns host James Madison this weekend, ULM is at Arkansas State,  Nicholls visits Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana is at UNO.

The LSU Lady Tigers will face North Carolina State tonight in the Sweet 16 Round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. LSU is playing its best basketball of the season as they scored more than 100 points in their first two NCAA Tournament games, second team ever to score 100 points in back-to-back tournament games.  Coach Kim Mulkey points to the health of her top players…

North Carolina State made it to the Final Four last year and in its last game against Michigan State, the Wolfpack made 15 three-pointers in an 84-49 victory.

In the men’s basketball tournament, Alabama made a tournament record 25 three-pointers in a win over BYU. Florida also won, but 10th seeded Arkansas lost in overtime to Texas Tech.

Offensive tackle Will Campbell’s arms measured 33 inches at LSU Pro Day, which was a little longer than the measurements taken at the NFL draft combine last month. Campbell says his arms did not grow over the last month. He says the measurements were messed up at the combine. A minimum of 34 inches is the standard for offensive tackles in the NFL, but Campbell doesn’t think it matters…

The NFL Competition Committee has recommended that after a touchback on a kick-off that lands in the end zone on the fly, the ball should be spotted at the 35-yard line, instead of the 30-yard. The committee is hoping this will lead to more returns. The NFL owners will vote on the proposal next week.

The eighth ranked LSU baseball team will host Mississippi State tonight to begin a three-game series. The Tigers are 4-2 in league play, while Mississippi State is 1-5 in the SEC. Coach Jay Johnson says this is a talented Bulldogs baseball team…

LSU will start Kade Anderson on the mound tonight, Mississippi State has shuffled its weekend rotation because of the Thursday night start, so they will NOT pitch its ace tonight. First pitch is at 7 PM. Weather could be a factor for games two and three.

The Ragin Cajuns will open their series against James Madison tomorrow at 1 PM to avoid the rain that’s moving in. After beating Central Arkansas and Little Rock on Tuesday and Wednesday, ULM is at Arkansas State this weekend.

At the NFL draft combine, former LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell’s arms were measured at 32 5-8 inches, which would be short for an offensive tackle in the NFL. At LSU’s Pro Day yesterday, Campbell’s arms measured at 33 inches long. 34-inches is the length NFL teams look for at offensive tackle. There’s talk that Campbell might make a better guard than tackle in the NFL. The former Neville star says offensive tackle is his preferred spot…

The eighth ranked LSU baseball team opens an SEC series with Mississippi State tonight. The Tigers are 4-2 in league play, while the Bulldogs are off to a 1-5 start. First pitch is at 7 PM.

Bill Armstrong is the new head men’s basketball coach at McNeese. Armstrong was an assistant at Baylor last season and he was the associate head coach for Will Wade when the two were at LSU. It’s the first head coaching job for Armstrong and he says it’s the perfect place to start his head coaching career…

Tulane is losing its head coach, Ron Hunter to North Texas. Hunter has been the head coach for the Green Wave the last six years and went 89 and 88.

The Lady Techsters defeated Lindenwood in the WNIT Super 16 last night by the final score of 68-64. Paris Bradley had 24 points.

ULM baseball won its second straight in Arkansas, beating Little Rock seven to six. Henry Garcia’s home run in the ninth inning was the difference. Southeastern Louisiana blanked Mississippi Valley State. It’s the Lions sixth shutout of the season, which leads the nation.

At LSU Pro Day, offensive tackle Will Campbell’s arms measured 33 inches. Offensive tackles in the NFL have arms that measure 33 inches or longer. Campbell, who is expected to be a top ten pick, has said the length of his arms has been an overblown topic.

Receiver Kyren Lacy was also at Pro Day. He ran a 4.47 in the 40. Lacy was not at the NFL draft combine last month because of his involvement in a fatal crash in December. State Police have charged Lacy with felony hit and run.

At LSU spring practice, Offensive Coordinator Joe Sloan loves the depth in the wide receiver room…

The eight-ranked LSU baseball team scored nine runs in the first inning on their way to a 17-4 win in seven innings over the Ragin Cajuns last night. Jared Jones hit a grand slam to cap off the nine-run first inning. The Tigers begin a series with Mississippi State tomorrow. Coach Jay Johnson said today, no changes with the weekend rotation.

In other action…Nicholls upset 13th ranked Southern Miss eight to five in Biloxi. Andy Miller finished a triple shy of the cycle as he had three hits and drove in two runs. Louisiana Tech defeated Grambling 14 to six. ULM upended Central Arkansas eight to one, Northwestern State over Centenary 11 to 1 and McNeese slammed Southern 15 to 5.

McNeese introduced Bill Armstrong as its new men’s basketball coach today. Armstrong was an assistant at Baylor this past season and Will Wade’s associate head coach at LSU. He told reporters he plans on taking McNeese back to the NCAA Tournament again next season.

The Shreveport City Council has approved a 30-year lease of the Stageworks of Louisiana building to Curtis “50 cent” Jackson. The media mogul and rapper has said he also wants to bring basketball, boxing, MMA fights, car shows and concerts to the Stageworks building in downtown Shreveport. Following the vote, Jackson told the council he will not let them down….

State officials were in Alexandria to announce a 39-million investment for the Renaissance Juvenile Facility. The money will result in the construction of a modern, secure facility on Renaissance’s campus, increasing the number of beds from 12 to more than 50. Governor Jeff Landry says these types of facilities allow juveniles to rehabilitate

The Monroe Police Department arrested 23-year-old Christopher Winfield of Monroe in connection with a gang-related shooting at Hibbett Sports on February 8th.  Zordan says Winfield was arrested Monday and charged with Rioting, Illegally Carrying a Weapon, and Attempted Second-Degree Murder.

LSU baseball and softball won big over U-L Lafayette last night. At Alex Box Stadium, the Tigers scored nine runs in the first inning and went on to beat the Cajuns 17 to four in seven innings. Jared Jones hit a grand slam to cap off the nine run first inning.

LSU softball spotted the Cajuns a four-run lead and then scored 11 unanswered runs to win 11-4.

Former Lafayette Christian football star Ju’Juan Johnson is spending spring practice at LSU at quarterback. Johnson started at LSU as a defensive back, moved to running back and now he’s at Q-B. Offensive coordinator Joe Sloan is impressed with his skill level…

Big win for Nicholls baseball last night as the Colonels upset 13th ranked Southern Miss eight to five in Biloxi. Nicholls grabbed the lead with a four-run seventh inning and Cole Poirrer from St. Amant High School pitched the final 2.1 innings for the save.

In Ruston, Louisiana Tech rallied back from a three-run deficit to beat Grambling 14 to six at the Love Shack. Garrison Berkley hit his third homer in the past two games and Coach Lane Burroughs says it’s good to see the left fielder swing the bat well…

Tech will host Kennesaw State this weekend, while Grambling is at Jackson State.

It didn’t take long for McNeese to hire a new men’s basketball coach and it’s someone former coach Will Wade knows really well. Bill Armstrong, who was a former associate head coach with Wade at LSU, will take over the Cowboys basketball program. Armstrong was an assistant at Baylor last season. Armstrong also spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Ole Miss.

The LSU women’s basketball team looked like one of the best teams in the nation last night as they outscored Florida State 31-6 in the third quarter as they blew out the Seminoles 101-71. LSU advances to play North Carolina State on Friday night in Spokane, Washington in the Sweet 16. Coach Kim Mulkey is eager to see if her team can get back to the Final Four…

In college baseball tonight…the eighth ranked LSU baseball team will look to snap its two-game losing streak as they host the Ragin Cajuns. U-L Lafayette’s Conor Higgs was named the Sun Belt Player of the Week today as he was 5-for-11 at the plate last week with three home runs and six runs driven in.

 

At LSU Spring football, Florida State transfer Destyn Hill from Edna Karr High School in New Orleans has been impressive to watch at practice. Hill is coming off a knee injury and Coach Brian Kelly likes his physicality…

For the third year in a row, the Lady Tigers are headed to the Sweet 16. LSU outscored Florida State 31-6 in the third quarter on their way to a 101-71 victory, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Head Coach Kim Mulkey says a lot of focus will be on the third quarter, but the second quarter was equally important as Flau’Jae Johnson and Mikaylah Williams watched a good portion of the second quarter due to foul trouble. Mulkey said her bench players did their job.

Jada Richard had six points and forward Sa’Myah Smith had a huge game as she scored a season-high 20 points on nine of nine shooting. She also had 12 rebounds and six assists. Up next for LSU is North Carolina, who the Lady Tigers beat earlier this season in the Bahamas. The rematch is Friday night in Spokane. Washington.

Wide receiver Brandin Cooks is back with the Saints and has no regrets on how his first stint in New Orleans ended. The Saints drafted Cooks, who is now 31-years-old, in 2014 and he became a one-thousand yard receiver for the Black and Gold. But after three seasons, New Orleans traded Cooks to New England as there were reports Cooks was unhappy with his role as he was seeking a big contract. Cooks says he intentionally did not burn bridges when he left New Orleans…
