The top ranked LSU baseball team suffered its first loss of the season last night as 18th ranked Texas handed it to the Tigers 8-1. The Bayou Bengals scored their lone run in the first inning, but only had four hits on the night. Zack Hess suffered the loss as he gave up three runs in four innings, while Chase Costello gave up another three runs in two innings. Game two is today at 3:30.

Louisiana Tech is 7-and-2 on the year after a 9-4 win over Arkansas State. Senior catcher Chris Clayton drove in a career-high four runs. Maryland doubled up the Ragin Cajuns four to two, Tennessee downed ULM seven to two, Troy topped Southeastern Louisiana five to two, McNeese held on to beat Nicholls seven to six and Northwestern State defeated Little rock 1-0.

In the NBA, the Pelicans defeated the Pheonix Suns 130-116. Jrue Holiday had 21 points and nine assists. New Orleans is at Denver tonight.

The 13th ranked LSU basketball team begins a two-game road trip in Tuscaloosa today for an 11 aM tip off at Alabama. There are three regular season games left and the Tigers are in a three-way tie for first place with Kentucky and Tennessee. The Wildcats and Volunteers will play each other later today.

Elsewhere, ULM hosts Coastal Carolina. The Warhawks are 12-and-1 at home this season.

There are seven Southland teams battling for the final three spots in the Southland Conference. Northwestern State is one of those teams. The Demons are at Southeastern Louisiana today. McNeese and Nicholls are also trying to get in the tournament. The Colonels host UNO, while the Cowboys visit Houston Baptist.

Also today, Grambling is at Arkansas Pine-Bluff.

At the girls state basketball tournament, Lafayette Christian won its third straight state title. Warren Easton won its second straight championship with a 58-49 win over Benton. Plainview won its second straight title and Elton won its first state championship since 1975. Six more champions will be crowned today in Alexandria.

In college hoops last night, ULM and the Ragin Cajuns both won. The Warhawks defeated Appalachian State 81-75 as Daishon Smith had 26 points. JaKeenan Gant poured in 29 points as UL-Lafayette defeated Coastal Carolina 83-70. Both teams are 8-7 in league play. La tech dropped its first home game, falling to Marshall 90-79.

The Pelicans have reportedly signed Euroleague shooting guard Dairis Bertans to a two-year contract. Bertans shot nearly 50-percent from three-point territory for a team in Italy. To make room for Bertans on the roster, New Orleans has waived Tim Frazier. The Pels are in Phoenix tomorrow night.

Former LSU pitcher Aaron Nola should be a happy man. That’s because his Phillies have signed Bryce Harper to a 13-year, 330 million dollar contract.

Jason Whitten is leaving the Monday night football broadcast booth and returning to the football field. Whitten is ending his retirment so that he can play his 16th season with the Cowboys.

At the girls state basketball championships, North Caddo advanced to the Class Two-A Championship game with a 48-47 win over Red River yesterday. They’ll face Mansfield, who knocked off Rayville 57-49.

Six state champions will be crowned today and six more tomorrow. All of the games will be shown live on C-S-T. The final game tonight is the Class 4A championship game between Benton and Warren Easton.

The top ranked LSU baseball team improved to 8-0 on the season with an easy 17-4 win over the Southern Jaguars. Senior right fielder Antoine Duplantis continued his early season tear by going 4-for-5 with 5 runs batted in. But not all of the news is good for the Purple and Gold. Coach Paul Mainieri say he’s 98-percent sure Gavin Dugas will need surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb. Dugas could miss the next two months.

Also last night, ninth ranked Mississippi State blanked Southeastern Louisiana 12-0, ending the Lions six-game winning streak in the series history between the two teams.

The Pelicans began their four-game Mardi Gras road trip with a 125-119 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Anthony Davis had 22 points in 21 minutes. Julius Randle had 35 points against his old team. But the Lakers prevailed as LeBron James had 33 points and 10 assists.

Sam Houston State won an outright Southland Conference regular season championship in New Orleans last night as the Bearkats defeated the Privateers 71-60. U-N-O falls to third place in the league standings.

Northwestern State is one of several teams fighting to get in the Southland Tournament. The Demons helped their chances with a 68-60 win over U-I-W. Ishmael Lane led the way with 20 points.
McNeese kept their Southland Conference Tournament hopes alive with an 84-75 victory over Nicholls in Thibodaux. Sha’Markus Kennedy had 23 of his 27 points in the second half. Both the Cowboys and Colonels are 5-and-10 in league play.

Tennessee topped Ole Miss 73 to 71 as the Volunteers improved to 13-2 in the SEC. Tennessee, Kentucky and LSU are tied for first place with three conference games left. The Vols host the Wildcats on Saturday, while the Tigers are at Alabama.

In action tonight, the Cajuns host Coastal Carolina, Appalachian STate is at ULM and Louisiana Tech takes on Marshall.

The 66-55 win keeps the Tigers in a first place tie in the S-E-C. Freshman forward Naz Reid led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds, after scoring just one point against the Volunteers. The LSU baseball team is hoping to get its game in tonight against Southern. Predicted inclement weater foreced the postponement of last night’s game against South Alabama to April 3rd. Southeastern Louisaina visits ninthr anked Mississippi State.

Sam Houston State can claim an outright Southland Conference regular season championship with a win over UNO tonight. The Privateers are fighting for a double bye in the conference tournament. The game can be seen on ESPN plus. Nicholls, Northwestern State and McNeese are all fighting to get in the Southland tourney. The Colonels host the Cowboys tonight and the Demons take on Incarnate Word, who has just one conference win.

For the second straight game, the 13th ranked LSU basketball team played without starting point guard Tremont Waters, but for the second straight contest it didn’t stop the Tigers from winning. The Tigers started strong and finished with a 66-55 win over Texas A-and-M. Coach Will Wade says his team set the tone by defending well…

The Aggies shot just 35-percent from the field, their lowest total of the season. Naz Reid led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

LSU improves to 13-and-2 in the SEC. Kentucky also won last night, beating Arkansas 70-66. So the Wildcats improve to 13-and-2 in league play as well. Tonight, seventh ranked Tennessee is at Ole Miss. LSU’s next game is Saturday at Alabama.

The NFL competition committee met in Indianapolis but came away from that meeting with no consensus on changes to instant replay, despite the controversial no call in the NFC Title game. New York Giants owner John Mara, a member of the competition committee, told reporters he doesn’t sense a lot of support to use replay to call penalties. Expect more discussion next month when all of the owners gather in Pheonix.

In college baseball last night, Louisiana Tech outlasted Little Rock five to three in 12 innings. A couple of throwing errors led to the winning runs crossing the plate.

Tulane topped Nicholls seven to four, Northwestern State blanked ULM 15-0. McNeese downed Alcorn State eight to one and UNO upset 23rd ranked Southern Miss two to one as the Privateers improve to 6-and-1.

Tonight, top ranked LSU is scheduled to host Southern. The Tigers scheduled game last night against South Alabama was postponed until April 3rd. Eric Walker is scheduled to start on the mound for LSU.

The 13th ranked LSU Tigers continue their push for an SEC regular season title tonight when the Bayou Bengals host Texas A-and-M at the PMAC. LSU is in a three-way tie for first place with four games left. But are dark clouds brewing in the distance. A Yahoo Sports report says LSU Coach Will Wade will be subpoenaed to testify in the federal basketball corruption trial. News broke of Wade’s participation in the trial a few minutes before his scheduled press conference yesterday and here’s what he said to reporters…

Back in October, Wade’s name first came up in a federal court when attorneys representing Adidas executive Jim Gatto read a recorded conversation that was allegedly between Wade and Christian Dawkins, who has since been found guilty of multiple felony fraud charges.

The Pelicans nearly battled back from a 13-point deficit to beat Philadelphia but lost 111 to 110 last night. Anthony Davis had 18 points in 21 minutes, but didn’t play at all in the fourth quarter. Jrue Holiday led a young group of Pelicans with 22 points. New Orleans will now hit the road for the next four games, starting tomorrow night in Los Angeles against the Lakers.

In college baseball, number one ranked LSU hosts South Alabama at 6 PM tonight. Eric Walker is scheduled to start for the Tigers. It will be his first start since leaving with tightness in his forearm in the third inning of a College World Series game in June of 2017. Walker later underwent Tommy John Surgery. He has made two appearances this season out of the bullpen.

Also today, Louisiana Tech is at Little Rock. The Trojans beat the Bulldogs twice last season. Nicholls hosts Tulane. That game can be seen on C-S-T at six o’ clock. The Ragin Cajuns are at Southeastern Louisiana. U-L Lafayette is off to a 1-and-6 start, while the Lions are 2-and-5. ULM is at Northwestern State. The Warhawks defeated S-I-U Edwardsville four to one yesterday.

Big game today in the P-MAC as the 13th ranked LSU basketball team hosts fifth ranked Tennessee at 11 AM. The Vols are 12-1 and in first place in the Southeastern Conference, while LSU is 11-and-2, tied with Kentucky for second place. Coach Will Wade says the Vols are really good as they are physical and well-coached. Six-foot-seven senior forward Grant Williams leads the team, averaging 19 points a game.

In other action today, ULM is fresh off a big win over Texas State on Thursday. Today the Warhawks visit U-T Arlington, who is 8-6 in the Sun Belt. ULM is 7-6 and so is UL-Lafayette who is at Texas State. The Bobcats are in a first place tie with Georgia State.

La Tech looks to stay undefeated at home as the Bulldogs host North Texas.

In the Southland, UNO is at McNeese. Southeastern Louisiana has a tough game at Abilene Christian, while Nicholls hosts Central Arkansas at 6:30.

LSU’s Zack Hess rebounded from a tough outing on opening night to earn his first win of the season on Friday in a 13-6 win over Bryant. Hess allowed one run over five innings. Daniel Cabrera swatted his third home run of the season a three-run shot in the eighth inning.

Elsewhere…Tulane stranded 12 runners and lost six to four to 10th ranked Ole Miss. Texas State outslugged McNeese 18-10 in the Cowboys home opener. Dane Simon hit a three-run homer as Nicholls upended Grambling six to one. Southeastern Louisiana won its first game of the season as they beat Stony Brook seven to two.

The Ragin Cajuns were fogged out at Sam Houston State and will play a doubleheader today at 3 PM. Louisiana Tech will begin its series against Troy at 3 PM. Southern at Northwestern State also start their series at 5.

The Pelicans blew a 20-point lead and lost to Indiana 126-111 last night. Anthony Davis only played 20 minutes and scored 15 points. It’s unknown if he’ll play tonight as New Orleans hosts the Lakers, the team A-D was hoping to get traded to.

After a rough start on opening night, Zack Hess returns to the mound tonight as the number one ranked LSU baseball team begins a three-game series against Bryant. Hess allowed five runs last week, but Coach Paul Mainieri says his ace has made a mechanical change and they expect better results tonight.

The Cajuns start a series at Sam Houston State tonight. Gunner Leger will not pitch this weekend, so he can rest after making his first in over a year last week. Louisiana Tech’s series with Troy starts Saturday in Ruston because of expected inclement weather tonight.

Former Tulane star, LSU hitting coach and Mississippi State head coach Any Cannizaro is back in baseball. He’s been named as the new head coach at Holy Cross High School in New Orleans. Cannizaro abruptly resigned from State last year. ESPN reported Cannizaro was involved in an extramartial affair with a female staffer.

The Pelicans return from the All-Star break to face the Indiana Pacers tonight. Anthony Davis is expected to start, interim general manager Danny Ferry says A-D’s minutes will be restricted. Former Ragin Cajuns star Elfrid Payton is also expected to start. He hasn’t played in about a month because of an injured ankle.

After losing in overtime to Florida on Wednesday, 13th ranked LSU hosts 5th ranked Tennessee on Saturday at 11 AM.

Also on Saturday, La Tech hosts North Texas. The Mean Green beat the Bulldogs in Denton earlier this season. McNeese is at UNO. The Privateers have won six of their last seven. In Thibodaux, Central Arkansas is at Nicholls.

The Pelicans return from the All-Star break tonight to face the Pacers in Indiana and disgruntled All-Star Anthony Davis is expected to start. The last time we saw Davis in a Pelicans uniform, he left the game and eventually the arena with a shoulder injury that turned out to be not a big deal. Interim general manager Danny Ferry says league rules make it clear A-D has to play, but you’ll see a reduction in his minutes.

A USA Today report says the NBA has formally proposed changing the draft-eligible age requirement from 19 to 18 to the National Basketball Players Association. Since 2005, the collective bargaining agreement has kept high school players from going straight to the pros.

In college hoops last night, Jerekius Davis came off the bench to score 19 points as the Cajuns topped Texas-Arlington 74-64. Davis hit five three-pointers. ULM beat Sun Belt leader Texas State 63-60 as Michael Ertel adn Travis Munnings each scored 13 points. The Warhawks snapped a seven-game road trip.

The Saints have reportedly releaded safety Kurt Coleman in a move that will save the team four million dollars against the salary cap. Coleman was signed last year as a replacement to Kenny Vaccaro, but second-round pick Vonn Bell ended up starting over Coleman. He only played on three snaps on defense in the two playoff games.

The top ranked LSU baseball team returns to the diamond tonight to start a three-game series against Bryant. Starting shortstop Josh Smith is off to a good start. After missing most of last season with a back injury, Smith is 10-for-16 through four games. The Baton Rouge product says his plan at the plate is working so far….

ULM is at Sun Belt leader Texas State tonight. The Warhawks are just two and 10 on the road this season and in a three-way tie for fifth in the Sun Belt. The Ragin Cajuns, who are also tied for fifth place, are looking to win their third straight tonight as they visit UT Arlington. The Mavericks have lost two straight.

The Pelicans will return from the All Star break tomorrow night and so will Anthony Davis. Head Coach Alvin Gentry said today that A-D will play tomorrow against the Pacers, but wouldn’t commit to whether Davis will play beyond that game.

The Saints have reportedly released back up safety Kurt Coleman because of salary cap concerns. Coleman was 5.5 million in total compensation this season. The Black and Gold are interested in bringing Coleman back, if they can get him at a lower price.

In college baseball last night, Louisiana Tech improved to 4-0 with a 3-2 win over the Ragin Cajuns in 10 innings. Senior Mason Robinson drove in the winning run with a two-out single. The Cajuns fall to 1-and-3 on the season. McNeese scored 10 runs in the 14th inning to beat Houston 13-5 in 14 innings at Don Sanders Field on Wednesday in Houston. Nate Fishbech had five hits, while senior right-hander Aidan Anderson pitched 5.2 innings of scoreless baseball out of the pen for his first win.
