LHSAA executive director Eddie Bonine made it official today, the spring high school sports season has been canceled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The spring sports season was halted in mid-March and today’s decision means baseball, softball, track, and other sports will not resume their seasons.

Will we have college football in the fall? College football insider Brett McMurphy with the Stadium Network says athletics director could choose to have games with no fans in the fall, but they may prefer to wait until spring of 2021 to have games with fans in attendance…

Former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow is expected to be the first pick in the 2020 draft which is two weeks from tonight. The top prospects can’t attend the draft since it will be fully virtual, a couple of cameras will be inside Burrow’s home so they can get his reaction and conduct interviews after he’s picked. Dozens of other prospects are also expected to have cameras in their homes.

A four-star safety in the 2022 recruiting class has committed to LSU. Bryan Allen Junior from Aledo, Texas reportedly chose the Tigers over Texas A-and-M, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, and U-S-C. 24-7 sports rates him as the number two safety in the country and the fifth-best player in the state of Texas in the class of 2022.

The Superdome and Tiger Stadium will be lit up in blue tonight at 8 Pm in honor of healthcare workers. Several other state buildings are doing the same, like the State Capitol and the governor’s mansion.

ESPN will re-air the final round of the 1997 Masters tonight. That was the first time Tiger Woods put on the green jacket.

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association has canceled the spring sports season. The LHSAA halted spring sports in mid-March and executive director Eddie Bonine has made the decision they will not resume due to the spread of the coronavirus and the possibility the governor will announce schools will remain closed for the rest of the year.

The question is being asked more and more, will there be a college football season in the fall. College football insider Brett McMurphy at the Stadium Network has surveyed the 130 F-B-S athletic directors and he believes the best option is for a football season starting in the spring

Usually, for the N-F-L draft, the top prospects go to the site of the draft to hear their name called and get their new jersey from Commissioner Roger Goodell. That will not happen this year, because it will be a fully virtual draft. LSU football releases a social media post that poses the question will the Tigers play football this fall. In the video, LSU’s team doctor Brent Bankston, says it’s essential we follow the C-D-C guidelines for good hygiene and the governor’s stay at home order in order to flatten the curve.

ESPN’s re-broadcast on Monday of the “Rebirth” game, the iconic Monday night contest between the Saints and Falcons in 2006 attracted about 70-thousand television viewers in the New Orleans area. The peak local rating was an 11.7.

Former NFL quarterback great Peyton Manning bought 140 meals from Drago’s Seafood Restaurant to feed health care workers caring for coronavirus patients at the Tulane Health System. In a video message, Manning said he wanted to take a minute to say thank you.

ESPN’s re-broadcast of the “Rebirth” game, the iconic Monday night contest between the Saints and Falcons on September 25th 2006 delivered a ten-point-nine rating with more than 67-thousand household impressions in the New Orleans area. It was the most-watched show in New Orleans on Monday.

Louisiana Tech athletics director Tommy McClelland says the school will cover the cost of funding for the additional scholarships in baseball and softball next year, because of the NCAA decision that grants an extra year of eligibility to all spring sports athletes. But track, golf, and tennis senior athletes will not automatically get scholarships if they return. McClelland calls it a tough decision. He says seniors from tennis, golf and track and field can return, but the coaches will have to decide how to fit them in their normal scholarship limits or they can compete as a walk-on.

Alabama Coach Nick Saban says he finally has his own email address. Saban said he had to create his own email because his wife Terry was tired of getting all of his emails. Saban told ESPN’s Mari Taylor that Miss Terry fired him. Saban says he’s also learned how to use Zoom and FaceTime during this time of social distancing.

We’re about two weeks away from the NFL’s virtual draft and teams are concerned about hacking since a lot of the communication between general managers and coaches will take place over the internet. Also, there are concerns about technical issues that may pop up. In an effort to alleviate concerns, the league and all 32 teams are expected to conduct a mock draft so they can see how it will work.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have unveiled new uniforms. No, they are not going back to the creamsicle colors. The new unis look a lot like the ones they wore last year, the biggest change is with the numerals. These new uniforms are very similar to the ones they wore when they won the Super Bowl in 2002. The Atlanta Falcons are also expected to debut new uniforms next week.

The NFL has released its all-decade team for the 2010s and there’s one current member of the Saints on that squad, defensive end Cam Jordan. New Orleans drafted Jordan in 2011 and since that time he’s recorded 87 sacks, 114 tackles for a loss, two interceptions, ten forced fumbles, and ten fumble recoveries. Former Saints players Darren Sproles and Jahri Evans are also on the team. Quarterback Drew Brees is not on the 2010s NFL All-Decade team. Two quarterbacks were chosen, Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. A couple of former LSU Tigers are on the team, Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu.

Former Holy Cross High School and McNeese quarterback James Tabary is among the thousands on the COVID-19 front lines. Tabary is working at the University Medical Center in New Orleans distributing inventory to all doctors and nurses, including personal protective equipment. Tabary is doing so with a heavy heart, his grandfather passed away last week from the virus.

This is supposed to be Masters Week, instead the prestigious major has been rescheduled for November. The first round is set for November 12th at Augusta National. That weekend the Masters will go head-to-head with college football and the NFL.

Major League Baseball is looking at the possibility of starting its season in May, with all of the teams playing their games in the Phoenix, Arizona area. There are a lot of hurdles to leap over for this to happen, like the safety of the players. It would have to require regular testing of the players and still practicing social distancing, which means no mound visits, having players sit in the stands instead of the dugout and using an automated strike zone, instead of the home plate umpire standing behind the catcher.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver says he will not make a decision on restarting their season until May. The N-H-L is looking at finishing its season at rinks in North Dakota.

Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy says his plan is to return to their facilities on May 1st.

That’s Steve Gleason’s famous punt block in the first game back in the Dome following Hurricane Katrina. The Saints went on to beat their biggest rival 23-3 in the 2006 home opener. Gleason tweeted it was surreal to re-watch. He also joked that Coach Payton looked like he was 12-years-old.

Hopefully, Payton’s internet will work during the draft. The NFL has told teams they must draft virtually, so general managers, coaches, and scouts will have to work out of their own homes from April 23rd to 26th.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver says he will not make a decision on re-starting the league until at least May.

I don’t think azaleas bloom in November but we’ll find out as the Masters’ Golf Championship has been re-scheduled for November 12th to the 15th at the famed Augusta National Golf club. Also, the U-S Open will be played in September from September 14th to the 20th at Winged Foot in Westchester County New York. The following week, it will be the Ryder’s Cup in Wisconsin. The British Open Championship has been canceled.

ESPN is reporting that Major League Baseball is looking at starting its season in the greater Phoenix, Arizona area in May. They would play games at the Diamondbacks home park and spring training sites in the area without fans. According to the report, the teams would live in isolation, there would be regular testing and the plan has the backing of federal public health officials. Obviously, there is still a lot to work out, but players have expressed interest in playing games as soon as possible.

College basketball news, LSU guard James Bishop is reportedly transferring to George Washington. ULM three-year starter Michael Ertel has entered the transfer portal.

Tonight at 7 PM, ESPN will re-air the iconic 2006 Monday night football game between the Saints and Falcons. It was the Black and Gold’s first game in the Dome after Hurricane Katrina.

Starting tonight Cox Sports Television will re-air games from LSU’s 2003 and 2007 national championship seasons. Tonight the regional sports network will re-broadcast the 2003 season opener against ULM.

The Saints will not be able to set up at Dixie Brewing Company during the draft. That’s because NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has told all teams club personnel can not gather at one place and must work out of their own homes.

Caretakers of LSU’s live mascot are avoiding direct contact with Mike the Seventh and have done so for the last three weeks. A tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York has tested postive for COVID-19.

Former Saints kicker Tom Dempsey, who once held the NFL record for the longest made field goal, has died at the age of 73 from complications of the coronavirus. Demspey spent eleven seasons in the NFL and kicked 159 field goals, even though he was born without toes on his right foot. His former teammate and ex-Saints quarterback Billy Kilmer…

Saints fans are mourning the death of legendary kicker Tom Dempsey, who for over four decades held the NFL record for longest made field goal. Dempsey booted a 63-yard field goal in 1970 despite missing toes and fingers on his right foot and hand. Dempsey tested positive for coronavirus over a week ago and late last week was transferred to hospice care. The 73-year-old also battled Alzheimer’s and dementia and lived at the Lambeth House senior living center in New Orleans, which has had dozens of COVID-19 cases.

Tonight Who Dat nation can re-live the Saints historic return to the Superdome following Hurricane Katrina as ESPN will re-air the iconic Monday night football game that saw the Saints beat the hated Atlanta Falcons in 2006. The game will be forever remembered for Steve Gleason’s blocked punt. But it was also the Superdome debut for Sean Payton, Drew Brees and Reggie Bush with the Black and Gold.

Louisiana native Kim Mukley will be enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in August. The Tickfaw native won a national championship as a player and an assistant coach with the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters. Mulkey has also won three national championships as the head coach at Baylor. She’s the first person in NCAA women’s basketball history to win a national title as a player, assistant coach and head coach.

Alexandria’s Lance Brasher has been named the Class 5A Boys Basketball Coach of the Year. Brasher led the Trojans to their first boys’ basketball championship. The girls’ 5A Coach of the year is Mary Lowry Ward. Under Ward’s direction, Benton went 29-5 and won the 5A title.

Over the weekend, President Trump held a conference call with the commissioners for the major sports leagues and said afterward he believes the NFL season should start on time in September, but the governors in California and New York are skeptical.

New Orleans might not be able to host the Super Bowl in 2024 because a 17-game schedule would push the game back one week later to February 11th that year, which would then impact Mardi Gras. It’s possible New Orleans might have to host the Super Bowl in 2025 or 2026.

LSU Coach Paul Mainieri is hoping the NCAA gives college baseball programs more flexibility when it comes to roster restrictions because seniors are allowed to come back next season and fewer players will be selected in the Major League Baseball draft this summer.

Louisiana has lost a legendary high school football coach to COVID-19. McDonogh 35 coach Wayne Reese Senior passed away yesterday at the age of 74. He was a coach for over four decades in his life and won 255 games. In 2011, he was the recipient of the Eddie Robinson Award and also coached pro football hall of Famer Marshall Faulk.

The LHSAA released a memo today that said they still hope member schools can complete their spring sports seasons. Executive Director Eddie Bonine says the length of the seasons and when championships would be held would be based on when schools can re-open. Based on the governor’s new order, schools are closed through April 30th.

NFL’s chief medical officer, Doctor Allen Sills, says widespread testing for the coronavirus will need to occur in order for the regular season to begin in September. Sills says the restrictions on gatherings will also have to be eased.
