Joe Burrow is the first LSU football player to be named the SEC Male Athlete of the Year. That honor was announced earlier today by the Southeastern Conference. While Burrow is the first Tiger football player to win the award, previous winners from LSU include Shaquille O’ Neal, who won it twice and former track stars Walter Davis and Xavier Carter.

It appears Major League Baseball is finally getting its act together. Commissioner Rob Manfred has confirmed he met face to face with the head of the players union Tony Clark and they jointly developed a framework that could result in an agreement that would result in a shortened 2020 season. According to the Athletic, Major League Baseball’s proposal calls for a 60-game season starting July 19th or the 20th and players would get a full prorated salary. There will also be expanded playoffs for this year and next and the players would agree to waive any potential labor grievance.

LSU Heisman Trophy Winning Quarterback Joe Burrow has been named the Roy F Kramer SEC Male Athlete of the Year. Burrow led the Tigers to a perfect 15-0 season and set numerous records along the way.

Could LSU pitcher Nick Storz be the Tigers’ next two-sport star? Storz, who is listed at six-foot-six, 262 pounds, is participating in the football team’s voluntary workouts. LSU’s all-time leading rusher, Kevin Faulk, is once again on the College Football Hall of Fame Ballot. The 1999 graduate of LSU currently serves as the Tigers running backs coach. Faulk rushed for 4,557 yards and 46 touchdowns during his LSU career.

Louisiana Tech coaching legend Maxie Lambright is also on the 2021 College Football Hall of Fame Ballot. Lambright led the Bulldogs to three NCAA division two national titles, seven conference titles and he was the Southland Conference’s coach of the decade for the 1970s.

LSU football Coach Ed Orgeron said on a Baton Rouge radio station this morning that LSU pitcher Nick Storz is participating in the football team’s voluntary workout program. At six-foot-six, 282 pounds Strorz is getting a look at tight end.

Former LSU pitcher Cole Henry who was selected in the second round by the Washington Nationals says he will sign with the World Series champs.

Last week Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said he was 100-percent sure there would be a baseball season in 2020. But last night on ESPN, Manfred said he’s longer confident there will be a baseball season. Owners and players have failed to come to an agreement on a return to play proposal and talks broke down over the weekend. On social media, the players say they are disgusted with Major League Baseball leadership.

The WNBA will have a season and the professional women’s basketball league plans to begin a 22-game regular season in late July without fans in Florida. The WNBA will have its regular playoff format, which will end in October.

Ouachita Christian star Hunter Herring was a ULM baseball commitment, now he’s given a verbal pledge to the U-L Lafayette football program. He’s a six-foot-four, 205-pound quarterback for the Eagles and is coming off a season in which he threw for nearly 18-hundred yards and 27 touchdowns for O-C-S, who won the Division Four state championship last season.

C-N-N has hired Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins as a contributor. Jenkins will continue to play football, but he’ll make himself available to the cable news network to speak on racial and social justice issues on various studio programs.

In the NFL, several players on the Cowboys and Texans have tested positive for COVID-19. The agent for star Dallas running back Ezekiel Elliot says his client was one of the players who tested positive.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is encouraging a team to sign Collin Kaepernick. Meanwhile, Kaepernick’s former team, the 49ers have given head coach Kyle Shanahan a new six-year contract after leading San Francisco to the Super Bowl last season.

Southern University athletics director Roman Banks has raised the possibility that the Bayou Classic might not be played in the Superdome in November. LSU’s Tiger Stadium, Shreveport’s Independence Stadium, and Southern’s home field have emerged as other options.

Southern Athletics Director Roman Banks it’s possible the Bayou Classic will not be played in New Orleans this year and maybe in 2021 as well. But Banks says no final decision has been made. LSU’s Tiger Stadium, Shreveport’s Independence Stadium, and Southern’s A-W Mumford Stadium are possible options for the 47th Bayou Classic if the game can’t be played in the Superdome.

Denny Hamlin edged Chase Elliot to win NASCAR’s Dixie Vodka 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Saints running back Alvin Kamara was there to cheer on Bubba Wallace, NASCAR’s lone full-time black driver. Kamara became a fan of NASCAR after the sport announced it’s banning the Conference flag at all of their events.

And in baseball, LSU’s Saul Garza and Zack Mathis have signed undrafted free agent deals. Garza is now a member of the Royals organization and Mathis inked a deal with the Padres.

One of the state’s top quarterbacks has committed to LSU. St. Thomas More’s Walker Howard announced his verbal pledge to the Tigers today. Even though he has yet to start a game on the varsity level, Howard is listed as the nation’s third-best pro-style quarterback in the class of 2020. His father is former LSU quarterback Jamie Howard, who played in the purple and gold from 1992 to 1995.

LSU and Southern University student-athletes will gather on the LSU campus tonight for an “Enough is Enough: Rally for Unity.” It will take place at free speech alley in front of the LSU student union.

Louisiana Tech has announced the addition of five transfers, quarterback Luke Anthony from Abilene Christian, wide receiver Jerrond Means from Tennesse, former LSU offensive lineman Donavaughn Campbell, former Texas defensive tackle Gerald Wilbon and defensive back Khalil Ladler from Virginia Tech.

Hard work paid off last night for LSU’s Cole Henry and Daniel Cabrera. They were selected in the second round in last night’s Major League Baseball Draft. Henry was selected by the World Series champion Washington Nationals, while the Detroit Tigers took Cabrera. Both are expected to sign professionally.

In the fifth round, Pittsburgh picked Northwestern State right-hander Logan Hoffman and Ragin Cajuns shortstop Hayden Cantrelle was selected by the Brewers. Cantrelle has told the Daily Advertiser that he plans to sign with Milwaukee.

Governor Edwards has signed the bill that authorizes Louisiana license plates that honor LSU’s national championship football season. Lafourche Parish Representative Reggie Bagala introduced the legislation but never had a chance to present the bill, because he died from complications of COVID-19 in April. The Office of Motor Vehicles has yet to say when the license plates will be available.

The son of former LSU quarterback Jamie Howard, Walker Howard, has announced he plans to follow in his father’s footsteps and play for the Tigers. Howard is getting ready for his junior season at St. Thomas More High School. 24-7 sports ranks Howard as the third-best pro-style quarterback in the nation for the class of 2022.

Two LSU Tigers were selected in the second round of the Major League Baseball draft last night. The World Series Champion Washington Nationals used the 55th overall pick to select right-handed pitcher Cole Henry, while the Detroit Tigers took outfielder Daniel Cabrera with the 62nd pick. Both are expected to sign with their professional teams.

Also last night, Baltimore drafted Tulane outfielder Hudson Haskin early in the second round. In the fifth round. Pittsburgh picked Northwestern State right-hander Logan Hoffman and Ragin Cajuns shortstop Hayden Cantrelle was selected by the Brewers.
