It was a big night of college baseball last night, 19th ranked LSU ended Southeastern Louisiana’s eight-game winning streak as the Tigers topped the Lions ten to seven. Cade Doughty stayed hot by hitting a three-run homer. Hayden Travinski also hit a three-run homer and drove in five runs.

After beating top-ranked Arkansas on Sunday, La Tech followed that up with a 13-1 win over fourth-ranked Ole Miss. Ruston native Cade Gibson made his first career start and allowed one earned run in 7.1 innings.

ULM upset 14th ranked Oklahoma State by defeating the Cowboys 13-6 in Arlington, Texas. Danny DeSimone hit his first home run and drove in three runs. The Cajuns snapped a four-game losing streak by beating Nicholls 9-8. Connor Kimple and Ben Fitzgerald homered for U-L Lafayette.

NBA, Portland rallied from 17 points down with six minutes left to beat the Pelicans 125-124 last night.

Saints Coach Sean Payton says Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill will compete for the starting quarterback job. Payton made that statement on the Dan Patrick Show and said the two players understand there will be competition to replace Drew Brees.

In other NFL news….the Saints are reportedly interested in cornerback Richard Sherman. While former Saint Janoris Jenkins has signed with the Titans. And wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders has signed with the Bills.

Spring football also begins today for the Ragin Cajuns. Coach Billy Napier has named Tim Leger and Michael Desormeaux as his co-offensive coordinators. They will replace Rob Sale, who is now an offensive line coach with Giants.

Grambling Coach Broderick Fobbs says his offensive coordinator Mark Orlando has resigned. Grambling is off to an 0-2 start in this spring season and in Grambling’s last game they only scored 10 points in a 17-10 loss to Prairie View. This Saturday Grambling hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff at noon.

Just one day after Drew Brees announced his retirement, the Saints have signed quarterback Jameis Winston to a one-year deal worth $12 million. Winston will battle with Taysom Hill for the opportunity to replace Drew Brees as the team’s signal-caller.

Defensive end Trey Hendrickson had a breakout season with the Saints last season with 13.5 sacks and now he’s getting paid. Cincinnati has reportedly signed the 26-year-old to a four-year, 60-million dollar contract.

LSU kicks off Spring Football today and one position battle that fans will be keeping an eye on is the quarterback position.  Myles Brennan. On the 15-year anniversary of the Saints signing Drew Brees as a free agent, the future Hall of Fame quarterback announced his retirement from professional football on Sunday, ending a stellar 20-year career. It was a wild weekend at Alex Box Stadium as LSU swept a series from Texas-San Antonio. On Saturday and Sunday, the Tigers blew big leads only to rally and win a pair of extra-inning games. Louisiana Tech defeated number one ranked Arkansas two to nothing yesterday, ULM over fourth-ranked Ole Miss 8-3.

Despite nearly winning the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament, LSU is an eight-seed in the NCAA Tourney and will play 16-and-4 St. Bonaventure on Saturday. Coach Will Wade says it will be a challenge to beat the Bonnies who won both the Atlantic Ten regular season and conference titles…

LSU gets an invite to the Big Dance after compiling an 18-9 record. They’ve won four of their last five and lost by one point to sixth-ranked Alabama in the SEC Tournament Championship game yesterday.

Louisiana Tech has received an invite to the N-I-T and the Bulldogs will face Ole Miss on Friday night in Frisco, Texas.

The Pelicans crushed the Clippers 135 to 115 last night as Zion Williamson had 27 points on 13 of 16 shooting.

The LSU men’s basketball team won its first SEC Tournament game since 2016 last night as the Tigers topped Ole Miss 76-73 to advance to the semi-finals. Trendon Watford played one of his best games of the season, scoring 24 points. Darius Days scored 20 points and finished with 12 rebounds. LSU will face Arkansas at 2:30 today.

Louisiana Tech was ousted from the Conference USA Tournament yesterday falling to North Texas 54-48. The Bulldogs shot just 32-percent from the field. 1991 was the last time Tech made it to the NCAA Tournament and that streak will continue.

Grambling lost in the SWAC Tournament last night to Prairie View A-and-M 75-63.

Nicholls advanced to tonight’s Southland Tournament Championship game as the Colonels knocked off Northwestern State 88-76. Nicholls will face Abilene Christian at 8:30. The winner gets an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Jaden Hill returned to form and the LSU baseball team defeated Texas-San Antonio 3-1 last night. Hill recorded just one out last week, but against the Roadrunners, he threw 6.2 innings of shutout baseball. The Tigers scored two runs in the eighth inning to win. Gavin Dugas beat out what could have been a double-play ground out and two runs scored on the play.

Louisiana Tech nearly upset top-ranked Arkansas but the Bulldogs fell to the Hogs 9-7 in ten innings. Razorbacks shortstop Jalen Battles hit a two-run homer in the tenth inning to make sure Arkansas remained undefeated. Parker Bates and Ben Brantley each drove in two runs for the Bulldogs.

Elsewhere, the Cajuns gave up eight runs in the second inning and lost to Southern Miss 13-4. Fourth-ranked Ole Miss crushed ULM 10-1. McNeese, Southeastern Louisiana, UNO, Nicholls, and Northwestern State were all winners in Southland action.

The Pelicans crushed the Cavaliers 116 to 82 as Brandon Ingram had 28 points.

The Saints took a couple more steps towards getting under the salary cap. The Black and Gold reportedly restructured the contract of star wide receiver Michael Thomas, saving them a reported nine million dollars in cap space. And the team has reportedly released defensive tackle Malcolm Brown. By cutting Brown, the Saints save nearly five million dollars in cap space.

March Madness begins for the LSU men’s basketball team tonight as they face Ole Miss in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament. Because of the pandemic, sophomore forward Trendon Watford missed out on this experience last season…

The latest salary-cap-related move for the Saints involves star receiver Michael Thomas.  Thomas has restructured his contract and converted his salary into a signing bonus to help free up $8.7 million in cap space as New Orleans inches closer to the salary cap.

Also, the Saints have now cut defensive tackle Malcolm Brown and are now just $12 million over the salary cap number.

LSU will begin SEC tournament play when they take on Ole Miss tonight.  The Tigers are the three seed and earned a double-bye in the tournament.  Coach Will Wade is still waiting for his team to play a complete game.

The New Orleans Pelicans were blown out by the Timberwolves last night 135-105 in their first game since the All-Star break.

Louisiana Tech beat Florida Atlantic 75-69 in the Conference USA tournament behind Isaiah Crawford’s 21 points.  Tech will play North Texas in the semifinals at 2 p.m.

McNeese basketball coach and athletic director Heath Schroyer will step away from coaching duties to focus solely on the role of athletic director.  Effective immediately, associate head coach John Aiken will be promoted to head coach.

The Saints have reportedly released cornerback Janoris Jenkins. ESPN’s Adam Schefter says the move will save the team seven million dollars. Jenkins’s release comes on the heels of the team cutting Emmanuel Sanders and Kwon Alexander this week. New Orleans is still an estimated 22-million dollars above the salary cap.

LSU Safety Maurice Hampton has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Hampton also plays on the baseball team and it was coach Paul Mainieri who broke the news. Hampton started five football games last season and has appeared in five baseball games this year.

The Athletic’s Brody Miller reports LSU linebacker Micah Baskerville is not enrolled at school this spring, but according to the report, there’s a chance Baskerville can still return to the team.

Bad loss for the Pelicans last night as the worst team in the NBA, Minnesota, mauled New Orleans 135 to 105. Coach Stan Van Gundy called the performance embarrassing. The Pels host the Cavaliers tonight.

Louisiana Tech advanced in the Conference USA Tournament last night as Isaiah Crawford had 21 points to help the Bulldogs beat Florida Atlantic 75-69. La Tech was down three with a little over three minutes left but finished the game on an 11 to two-run. The Bulldogs will face North Texas at 2 PM today.

Trenton Massner had 20 points and Northwestern State defeated UNO 82-79 in the Southland Tournament and the Demons will face top-seeded Nicholls at 5 PM today. The Colonels swept the season series from Northwestern State.

Cam Christon had 26 points as Grambling defeated Southern 72-67 in the SWAC Tournament.

Ole Miss defeated South Carolina in last night’s SEC Tournament so the Tigers will take on the Rebels in the quarterfinals. LSU freshman guard Cam Thoms says Coach Wade’s message is to be excited and energetic for the possibility of making a postseason run…

A former LSU tennis player who was allegedly raped by former running back Derius Guice spoke to lawmakers yesterday about how the school failed to take her claim seriously. Abby Owens said her Dad told tennis coach Julia Sell what happened, but Owens said Sell called her a liar and when the incident was reported to Associate A-D Miriam Seger it was never investigated.

Guice is facing domestic violence charges in Virginia. He denies any wrongdoing while at LSU.

The Pelicans return from the All-Star Break tonight to host the Timberwolves. It was a year ago today when the NBA halted its season.
