This year’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament has featured several upsets and eighth-seeded LSU will try to add to the upset tally when they face top-seeded Michigan at 6:10 PM tonight. Michigan’s leading scorer is seven-foot-one freshman Hunter Dickinson, who is averaging 14 points and seven rebounds a game. Six-foot-seven Junior Forward Darius Days on going up against Dickinson and the Wolverines….

The Pelicans finished off a three-game road trip by beating the Denver Nuggets 113 to 108 yesterday.  Forwards Zion Wiilliamson and Brandon Ingram each had 30 points in the victory while guard Nikeil Alexander-Walker contributed to the win as he poured in 20 points.  The Pels shot over 48 percent as a team and out rebounded the Nuggets 45-37.  New Orleans is 18-24 after the win.

The LSU baseball team finally showed some signs of life at the plate yesterday as they were able to win the final game of the three-game weekend series against Mississippi State.  Gavin Dugas blasted a solo home run to break a two-two tie in the sixth inning and the Tigers went on to win eight to three. Freshman designated hitter Brody Drost also homered.  The Bulldogs took the series two games to one.

Louisiana Tech is red hot after finishing off a sweep of Tulane this past weekend. Manny Garcia homered and drove in three runs for the Bulldogs who have won five in a row.  Tech is now ranked 23rd in D1 Baseball’s latest poll due to the team’s latest winning streak.

The Warhawks won their opening Sun Belt Conference series by taking two of three from Georgia State.

The Ragin Cajuns dropped two of three to 15th ranked TCU. McNeese leads the Southland Conference after taking three of four from Houston Baptist.

In football news, McNeese and Southern both got wins on Saturday, while Southeastern Louisiana fell to Incarnate Word.

In NFL free agency, former Saints defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins has signed a two-year, 17-million dollar contract with the New York Jets. In five seasons in New Orleans, Rankins had 17.5 sacks.

This is the eight time St. Bonaventure has made the Big Dance and being the ninth seed is the highest they’ve ever been.

Louisiana Tech advanced in the N-I-T as the Bulldogs beat Ole Miss 70-61 last night. Freshman Kenneth Lofton had another big game with 22 points and seven rebounds as Tech erased a 10-point halftime deficit by outscoring the Rebels 43-24 in the second half. The Dunkin Dogs will play Conference USA rival Western Kentucky in the quarterfinals of the N-I-T on Thursday night.

LSU baseball knew it would face some great pitching during its opening SEC series and that’s exactly what happened last night as the Bayou Bengals struck out out 12 times in a 6-1 loss to the Mississippi State Bulldogs. LSU had four hits on the night and Jaden HIll gave up six runs in his second loss.

Elsewhere, Louisiana Tech’s Jonathan Fincher threw a one-hitter as the Bulldogs blanked Tulane 2-0. Hunter Wells had two hits and drove in a run.

The Ragin Cajuns took down 15th ranked TCU seven to two. Tyler Robertson hit a three run homer and Spencer Arrighetti struck out eight in his third win.

ULM gave up three runs in the sixh inning and lost to Georgia State 4-3.

McNeese thumped Houston Baptist 12-6, Nicholls edged Abilene Christian seven to six, Sam Houston over Northwestern State three to two and Grambling topped Texas Southern five to four

In college football, Grambling hosts Arkansas Pine Bluff at Noon and McNeese is at Northwestern State for a four PM kick-off.

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan spoke to the media for the first time since suffering an abdominal injury against Missouri early last season.  This injury was so rare that very few surgeries had been performed on this area of the body.  Brennan says that’s ultimately why he decided to let the injury heal on its own.

Veteran defensive back PJ Williams has signed a one-year, $2.3 million deal with the New Orleans Saints.  All of the money included in the deal is fully guaranteed, which is likely due to the versatility that Williams showed last season as he played 288 snaps at safety for the Saints while lining up at corner and nickel for 182 snaps.

The NFL has finalized an 11-year media rights agreement with a pact that could be worth over $100 Billion.

The 19th ranked LSU baseball team opens SEC play tonight with a big weekend series against third-ranked Mississippi State.  Jaden Hill will start for the Tigers on the mound and Mainieri says he goes into conference play with freshman right-hander Garrett Edwards from Pitkin as his closer.

In basketball news, LSU will play St. Bonaventure in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.  The Tigers will take on the Bonnies on Saturday, tipoff is at 12:45.

Also, the four-seed Louisiana Tech Bulldogs will take on the top-seeded Ole Miss Rebels in the N.I.T.  tonight at 8 p.m.

But Brees will be away from his family on weekends in the fall. He’ll work as a studio analyst for NBC’s Football Night in America on Sunday and on Saturday, he’ll serve as a color commentator for NBC’s broadcasts of Notre Dame football. Brees hopes he can teach something about the game to fans they didn’t know.

New Orleans Defensive back P-J Williams is reportedly returning to the Black and Gold on a one-year deal worth 2.3 million dollars. Former LSU Tiger Patrick Peterson is back in purple and gold as the standout cornerback has signed a one-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings. Jared Cook is headed back to the west coast as the former Raider and Saints tight end has signed with the Los Angeles Chargers.

When the LSU men’s basketball team is not practicing for Saturday’s first-round NCAA Tournament game against Saint Bonaventure, they are in their hotel room in Indianapolis. Coach Will Wade says many of his players have turned to video games for entertainment…

On Fox Sports New Orleans tonight, the Pelicans will face the Portland Trail Blazers for a second straight game. On Tuesday, the Pels blew a 17-point fourth-quarter lead and lost to the Trail Blazers 125 to 124 on their home floor. Coach Stan Van Gundy has said he wants more of the offense to go through Zion Williamson during the late stages of the game.

Tomorrow night, Louisiana Tech will take on Ole Miss in the first round of the N-I-T. The Bulldogs are 12-and9 all-time in the N-I-T and reached the tournament’s final four in 1986.

The LSU men’s basketball team is out of NCAA quarantine in Indianapolis and after multiple negative COVID-19 tests, they can now practice for Saturday’s first-round NCAA Tournament game. Coach Will Wade says it’s a different NCAA experience, but he rather be living in a hotel room in Indianapolis than in Baton Rouge preparing for next season…

LSU says it will allow tailgating with limitations at spring outdoor athletic events starting tomorrow with Tigers hosting Mississippi State in a big SEC baseball series.

The LSU basketball team is staying at a hotel in Indianapolis as they get ready to take on St. Bonaventure on Saturday afternoon in a first-round NCAA Tournament game. Head Coach Will Wade says his team arrived on Monday and had to quarantine for two days and they have been confined to their hotel.

Bloomington, Indiana is where LSU will play its first-round NCAA Tournament game on Saturday against St. Bonaventure. The game will take place at Indiana University’s Assembly Hall.

The bracket for LSU legend Shaquille O’ Neal has the Tigers winning the NCAA Tournament. But they have to get past the Bonnies first. St. Bonaventure won the A-10 regular-season and tournament championships and rank fifth in the nation in defense, allowing 60 points a game.

Max Johnson took the first-team quarterback snaps on the first day of spring football. Coach Ed Orgeron says he chose Johnson over the other three quarterbacks on the roster because he’s the only Q-B on campus who went 2-0 last season, winning both of his starts against Florida and Ole Miss….

On defense, Orgeron says cornerback Eli Ricks will likely miss most of the spring football because of an injury. The spring game will be April 17th.

The Pelicans blew a 17-point fourth-quarter lead and lost to Portland last night 125 to 124 to begin a three-game road trip. The loss drops New Orleans record to 17 and 23.

The 15th ranked LSU baseball team got ready for the start of SEC play this weekend by ending Southeastern Louisiana’s eight-game winning streak with a 10-7 win over the Lions. The Fighting Tigers are 15-and-3 and in nine games this season, they’ve scored 10 or more runs.

Louisiana Tech scored 13 runs last night and defeated fourth-ranked Ole Miss 13-1. The Bulldogs got a terrific pitching performance from Ruston native Cade Gibson. The left-hander allowed one run in 7.1 innings.

ULM also knocked off a ranked opponent last night as the Warhawks defeated 14th ranked Oklahoma State 13-6. Danny DeSimone and Logan Wurm each had 3 RBIs for the Warhawks who are 7-and-6.

The Ragin Cajuns ended a five-game losing streak by beating Nicholls nine to eight last night. U-L Lafayette will welcome T-C-U to Tigue Moore Field this weekend, while the Colonels are at Abilene Christian.

1140 Sportscast 3/17

The LSU Baseball team defeated Southeastern Louisiana last night by a score of 10-7.  The Tigers scored four runs in the first inning thanks to a three-run homerun by Hayden Travinski.  The Lions would cut it to a one-run game shortly after before LSU added more runs behind Cade Doughty’s three-run homer.  The Tigers will now focus their attention on Mississippi State as conference play begins this weekend.

Louisiana Tech’s baseball team dominated number-4 ranked Ole Miss last night in route to a lopsided 13-1 victory in Ruston.  Pitcher Cade Gibson was earned the win after going 7 and a third innings, giving up five hits, one walk, and earning five strikeouts.

The ULM Warhawks cruised past number-14 Oklahoma State on the diamond last night 13-6.  Danny DeSimone and Logan Wurm each drove in three runs and Nicholas Judice threw five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.

Ragin Cajuns baseball snapped a four-game losing streak as they took down Nicholls 9-8.  The Cajuns jumped on the Colonels early but Nicholls fought back, scoring four runs in the bottom of the eight to make it a one-run game.

LSU wrapped up the first spring football practice.  The Tigers will look to bounce back after a disappointing 2020 season where they went 5-5.  Head Coach Ed Orgeron says he knows the fan base expects more.

ULM also began spring football practice and after going 0-10 last season, the Warhawks will try to rebuild the program behind a high-profile coaching staff.  Head Coach Terry Bowden says residents of Monroe are excited for the upcoming season.
