LRN 11:40 Sportscast February 17

The LSU men picked up their third consecutive victory, knocking off Georgia with a convincing 84-65 home win. It’s the first double-digit triumph since Jan. 8 when they beat Tennessee. Tari Eason led the Tigers with 21 points, and Darius Days collected his seventh double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Xavier Pinson had seven points and a career-high 10 assists. LSU is tied with Alabama for fifth in the SEC standings with five games to play in the regular season.

The 11th-ranked LSU women are on the road tonight to face Mississippi State. The Tigers have won four in a row, and are led by the reigning SEC Player of the Week, Alexis Morris. Tip-off is set for 6 pm in Starkville.

The New Orleans Pelicans look to end their six-game homestand on a high note. They enter tonight’s contest with the Dallas Mavericks with a 2-3 record over the first five games at the Smoothie King Center. The Pels have fallen a game and a half behind Portland for the 10th seed in the Western Conference.

Another NFL player is a suspect in the assault case against Saints running back Alvin Kamara. A Las Vegas news station is reporting that Chris Lammons of the Kansas City Chiefs was also involved in the altercation that occurred the night before the Pro Bowl. So far, two other associates of Kamara have been arrested with police still searching for Lammons.

Ragin’ Cajuns men’s basketball coach Bob Marlin is under heavy fire. The Cajuns have lost three games in a row and eight times in their last 10 games, sitting in ninth place in the Sun Belt standings. Staring at his second losing season in three years, Marlin still believes his team has time to turn things around.

At the other end of the spectrum is the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, winners of two in a row and tied for second in Conference USA. After being on the road for their last three games, the Bulldogs return home for a pair of home games, with UTEP visiting Thursday and Texas-San Antonio on Saturday. Coach Eric Konkol is glad to be back in front of the home fans.

Just days after Saints running back Alvin Kamara was arrested for felony battery, two other men have been charged in connection with the beating of a man in Las Vegas over Pro Bowl Weekend. Report indicate another arrest warrant has been issued — this one for Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Chris Lammons. The felony battery charges against Kamara could mean one to five years in prison if convicted.

The LSU men’s basketball team rolled over the Georgia Bulldogs last night in the PMAC on Dale Brown Court 84-65 for the Tigers third straight win. LSU had a trio of players in double figures led by Tari Eason who finished with 21 points, Brandon Murray had 15 points and Darius Days also added 15. The Tigers travel to face the Gamecocks Saturday.

The NFL Network is reporting Coach Dennis Allen is keeping Pete Carmichael as offensive coordinator on the new Saints head coach staff. Carmichael has been with the Saints since 2006 and OC since 2009.

Former LSU Tiger Cam Thomas went off last night for the Nets in Brooklyn’s 111-106 victory over the New York Knicks. The rookie led Brooklyn back from a 28-point deficit with 16 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter.

After a 15-1 start, the LSU men’s basketball team is just 3-6 over its last nine games heading into tonight’s matchup with Georgia. Even with the devastating injuries the team has suffered over the course of the season, Will Wade knows his team won’t get any sympathy and that there’s only one way for the Tigers to change the narrative…

The LSU baseball season starts Friday, and the preseason honors keep rolling in. Three Tigers, first baseman Tre Morgan, infielder Jacob Berry, and outfielder Dylan Crews were named to the preseason Golden Spikes Award watch list. The college baseball equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, the award goes to the best player each season. Berry was a 2021 nominee as a freshman at Arizona, Crews was last season’s Perfect Game Freshman of the Year, and Morgan finished fourth in the SEC in batting.

The Tigers host Maine at The Box for their three-game opening series.

After a 26-26 finish last season, ULM baseball coach Mike Federico has higher expectations for the WarHawks this season. Though they were picked to finish ninth in the Sun Belt Conference preseason poll, UL-M is led by returnees Grant Schultz, Trace Henry, and Travis Washburn. Federico believes his team has enough experience to make a jump in the standings.

Home Bank has donated $1 million to Ragin’ Cajun athletics to help with the renovations of Cajun Field and secure the naming rights to the university’s soccer and track facility. Some of the funds will also go to the Ragin’ Cajuns Athletic Fund. UL alum and Home Bank president and CEO John Bordelon is co-founder of the RCAF. The donation is part of a $500 million fundraising effort by the university to renovate all of its athletic facilities.

LSU takes the court tonight at 6pm when it hosts Georgia at the P-MAC. After a 15-1 start, the Tigers are just 3-6 since. A big key to the game will be keeping Georgia off the free-throw line. The Bulldogs score 16 points per game at the stripe, and with LSU struggling with depth this season, head coach Will Wade says the Tigers will have to be disciplined defensively against an aggressive Georgia offense.

Tulane improved to 12-11 on the season with a 76-57 win over South Florida. The Green Wave are now 9-5 in the American Conference and sit alone in fourth place in the league standings. Jaylen Forbes scored 22 points to lead all scorers.

One night after they routed the Raptors, the New Orleans Pelicans were gouged by the Memphis Grizzlies, losing 109-121 at the Smoothie King Center. The Pels shot just 15 percent from deep, being outscored by 18 by Memphis from beyond the arc.

New Grambling head football coach Hue Jackson has agreed on a four-year, $1.6 million contract with the university according to documents published by the University of Louisiana System. His deal will pay him $400,000 annually once approved by the ULS Board of Supervisors, which is set to meet on Thursday.

Conference USA released its schedule today, including the 12-game slate for Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs kick off the season on September 3rd at Missouri with other non-conference games against Stephen F. Austin, Clemson, and South Alabama. The conference schedule is where things get tricky. Both Southern Miss and Old Dominion are listed as conference foes, but both schools and Marshall are expected to be on the Sun Belt schedule when it is released March 1st. Expect a legal fight to sort this out.

The Pelicans are 1-and-3 since the trade for C-J McCollum as New Orleans lost to Memphis Grizzlies 121 to 109 last night. New Orleans is also one game out of 10th place, the final spot for the play-in tournament.

In college hoops, Tulane defeated South Florida 76-57 for its ninth conference win, the most since joining the AAC in 2015.

The Saints have reportedly interviewed Chargers linebackers coach Michael Wilhoite for their vacant defensive coordinator position. Wilhoite was an assistant for the Saints in 2019 and 2020, helping the special teams and defensive coaching staffs. Wilhoite also played in the NFL for six seasons.

ULM opens the baseball season on Friday by hosting Southern Illinois. Warhawk Field underwent one-point-four million dollars in renovations during the offseason. New FieldTurf was installed and the team’s locker and weight rooms were revamped, plus other improvements. Coach Michael Federico says the renovations have impacted his players as much mentally as it has helped in their on-field prep for the season…

The Louisiana state high school soccer finals continue today at Strawberry Stadium in Hammond. Top-seeded Vandebilt Catholic takes on number two U-High at 7:30 this evening for the Division III Boys’ championship. The teams played to a 3-3 tie back on Dec. 3. U-High knocked off Vandebilt in 2020 for a second straight title, and the Terriers are seeking their first title since 2018.

In the Girls Division III finals, number two Loyola Prep out of Shreveport faces Hannan at 3:30. Loyola Prep finished as runner-up last season.

The LHSAA has also announced the first-round pairings for the 2022 girls basketball playoffs. Earning the top seed in Class 5A is Baton Rouge area power Walker High. Warren Easton claims the top seed in 4A, with Brusly as the top seed in Class 3A. Amite is the team to beat in 2A, while Northwood-Lena leads the pack in Class 1A.

Among the select schools, four of the five top seeds are looking to repeat as champions, including John Curtis in Division I, Division II St. Louis, Lafayette Christian in Division III, and Ouachita Christian in Division IV. Family Christian takes the top seed in Division V.

The New Orleans Pelicans earned a season split of their series with the Toronto Raptors with a 120-90 rout last night at the Smoothie King Center. New Orleans led this one wire-to-wire and had six players reach double figures. CJ McCollum led the team in scoring with 23 points, and Brandon Ingram had a near triple-double in just 29 minutes with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists. The Pels had a season-high 36 assists on 45 baskets. With all of the weapons at their disposal, Ingram says sharing the basketball is easy to do.

The Pelicans will host the Memphis Grizzlies tonight. New Orleans has won its last eight in a row against the Grizzlies at home.

Former Grambling stars James “Shack” Harris and Doug Williams will be hosting the first-ever HBCU Legacy Bowl this Saturday at Tulane’s Yulman Stadium, featuring the nation’s best HBCU football players. The game, which will be broadcast on the NFL Network is a partnership between the NFL, Pro Football Hall of Fame, Tulane, and the Black College Football Hall of Fame. Kickoff is at 3 pm.

The Pelicans got off to a hot start last night and never looked back in a 120 to 90 win over the Toronto Raptors. Its New Orleans largest margin of victory this season. CJ McCollum was nine of 13 from the field and scored 23 points. Jonas Valancinuas had 18 points and 9 rebounds.

LSU sophomore Tari Eason has been named Louisiana Sports Writers Association men’s basketball player of the week. Not sure how he was not named SEC Player of the week as the six-foot-eight guard averaged 24 points and nine rebounds in two victories last week. The Tigers host Georgia tomorrow.

Southern leads the SWAC western division after beating Texas Southern 70-58 last night. Grambling suffered a tough loss to Prairie View A-and-M 71-70.

The LSU Lady Tigers moved up three spots in the lastest A-P top 25 poll to number eleven.

The Ragin Cajuns men’s basketball team is struggling. They’ve lost three in a row and eight of their last ten and there’s talk among the fan base about head coach Bob Marlin’s job security. Marlin says he’s not paying attention to that noise…

LSU football had its fingerprints all over yesterday’s Super Bowl. Odell Beckham Jr. scored the opening touchdown for the Rams before an apparent left ACL injury ended his night, and Andrew Whitworth, the oldest lineman to ever start in the Super Bowl, claimed his first championship in what may have been his final game. Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase had their moments for Louisiana’s temporarily adopted team, the Bengals. Burrow threw for 263 yards and a TD, with Chase catching five balls for 89 yards.

Official figures aren’t yet in, but Super Bowl 56 may be the most-watched of all time. An estimated 117 million people tuned in to the game. If that number holds, it would top the previous record of just over 114 million viewers, set in 2015, when the New England Patriots defeated the Seattle Seahawks. Last season’s Super Bowl, between Tampa Bay and Kansas City, had an estimated 91.6 million viewers.

Even the halftime show, headlined by Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and 50 Cent, saw a major jump in viewership with 29 million households watching. That’s an increase of 19 percent over last year. Overall, the number of viewers that only tuned in to the halftime show rose by 60 percent.

The New Orleans Pelicans have lost two in a row since acquiring guard CJ McCollum from Portland just before the trade deadline. The Pels will try to stop that skid tonight at home against the Toronto Raptors. McCollum has averaged 25.5 points, nine rebounds and five assists in his two appearances, but the Pelicans have surrendered 113 points per game over those losses. New Orleans is 5-28 this season when allowing more than 105 points. Devonte’ Graham says the Pels will figure it out and get back on track.

The LSU women’s basketball team has climbed to number 11 in the latest AP poll, the team’s highest ranking since 2007-08. LSU’s 21 wins are already the most since the 2013-14 season. The Tigers went 3-0 last week, including victories over Ole Miss, Georgia, and Texas A&M. LSU has won four in a row, and swept the season series with the Aggies on Sunday, winning 74-58. Khayla Pointer and Alexis Morris scored 25 points each.

The Los Angeles Rams claimed their second Super Bowl championship, beating the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20. Cooper Kupp was named MVP after catching eight passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner with 1:25 remaining. LSU products Odell Beckham Jr and Andrew Whitworth earn their first Super Bowl rings, with Beckham scoring the game’s opening TD before exiting with a knee injury.

Many fans across the state had adopted the Bengals during their run to the big game. Joe Burrow finished the game with 263 yards and one TD, and Ja’Marr Chase added 89 receiving yards.

Cincinnati came up short, but after going from only winning six games over the previous two seasons to within three points of a title, Burrow says there’s a lot of joy to be taken from what his team accomplished.

Tulane pulled out an overtime win over Temple to claim sole possession of fourth place in the AAC standings. UNO beat Incarnate Word by 27 to remain in first place in the Southland, while Nicholls extended its win streak to five in a row, and both Southeastern and McNeese grabbed weekend victories. Southern fell into a tie for first place in the SWAC after losing to Prairie View.

And the LSU women went on the road to knock off Texas A&M 74-58. The Tigers improve to 21-4 on the year.

Much to the dismay of Saints fans, the Los Angeles Rams are Super Bowl champs after scoring a late touchdown to beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in Super Bowl 56. Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp was named the game’s MVP after catching two touchdown passes, beating former Saints cornerback Eli Apple for the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Former LSU Tiger Odell Beckham caught the game’s first TD pass to give the Rams an early lead but left in the first half with a knee injury. Former LSU and West Monroe standout Andrew Whitworth is finally a Super Bowl champ at the age of 40.

But Most LSU fans were rooting for Joe Burrow and the Bengals. Burrow was sacked seven times, but Burrow didn’t point any fingers at his o-line…

The Ragin Cajuns are mired in a three-game losing streak after losing to U-T Arlington on Saturday. U-L Lafayette will visit ULM on Thursday. The Warhawks had their three-game winning streak snapped as they lost to Texas State.

The hottest team in the state is Nicholls. The Colonels won their fifth straight on Saturday as they topped Texas A-and-M Corpus Christi 83-80 in OT. The Colonels host McNeese on Thursday. The Cowboys beat Northwestern State 80-75 on Saturday.
