Tulane Coach Willie Fritz says he’s staying with the Greenies. Georgia Tech expressed interest in Fritz, but the Yellow Jackets have decided to make interim coach Brent Key their full-time coach. The Green Wave host U-C-F on Saturday in the American Athletic Conference championship game.

Southeastern Louisiana is preparing to face Samford in the second round of the F-C-S playoffs. The Lions have failed to reach to the quarterfinals in two of last three years as they suffered losses to Montana and James Madison. Turnovers were a big issue in both games and Coach Frank Scelfo is emphasizing limiting mistakes against the Bulldogs…

In basketball…Southeastern Louisiana gave the 11th ranked Lady Tigers a good game last night, holding LSU to a season low point total, but Kim Mukley’s team found a way to win, knocking off the Lions 63-55. The Ragin Cajuns mens’ team raced past Loyola 104-70. Tonight the Pelicans host Toronto.

LSU and Georgia kickoff at 3:00 p.m. Saturday in Atlanta. The Tigers are down to number 14 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings.

The 11th ranked LSU Lady Tigers got a scare from Southeastern Louisiana last night but LSU eventually pulled through beating the Lions 63-55 in the PMAC. Angel Reese had 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead LSU, while the Lions got 28 points from Alexius Horne from Denham Springs.

Southeastern beat Idaho last week 45-42 to advance to the second round of the FCS playoffs. The Lions will visit Samford Saturday in Birmingham. SLU has made two second-round playoff appearances in the last three years, but Coach Frank Scelfo and the Lions haven’t managed to make it to the quarterfinals.

In losses in 2019 and 2021 to Montana and James Madison, the Lions lost by a combined score of 132-48.

It looks like Willie Fritz is staying at Tulane. There was speculation Fritz was leaving to take the head coaching job at Georgia Tech, but the Yellow Jackets are promoting interim coach Brent Key to full-time coach.

The U-S Men’s Soccer team is advancing to the knock out stage of the World Cup after beating Iran 1-nil yesterday.

The defending national champs have been in the SEC Championship game four of the last five years including a loss to Alabama last year. LSU Coach Brian Kelly doesn’t think their familiarity with the game will give them an advantage but knows they’re a talented confident team….

The USMNT held on to a 1-0 victory over Iran to advance to the knockout round of the World Cup. Forward Christian Pulisic suffered an abdominal injury while scoring the lone goal in the 38’ minute and was subbed off at the end of the first half. The US held on to advance and will face the Netherlands Saturday.

After the loss to the 49ers, the Saints are 4-8 on the season and sit at last in the NFC South, but the division-leading Buccaneers are only one game ahead of the Black and Gold. With 3 of the last five games of the season against division opponents and a Monday night matchup against the Bucs next week, New Orleans is still in the hunt for a playoff berth, but Coach Dennis Allen says the team isn’t worried about the standings…

The Pelicans got their 12th win of the season over the Thunder last night, moving them to third in the Western Conference. Without CJ McCullom and Brandon Ingram, Zion Williamson led the team with 23 points, 8 rebounds, a career-high 8 assists, and 3 blocks. The Pels will host Portland tomorrow at 7:00.

The Lady Tigers will look to remain undefeated tonight as they host Southeastern. LSU has moved to 11th in the nation after a 99-68 win over UAB and hopes to continue their streak against the 4-2 Lions. Tip-off is set for 7:00.

Auburn officially introduced Hugh Freeze as its new football coach. In 13 seasons, Freeze has a 76-47 record as a head coach at Lambuth, Arkansas State, Ole Miss and most recently Liberty.

Texas A-and-M has said Darrell Dickey will not return as the school’s offensive coordinator.

The defense did a good job of slowing down a high-powered 49ers offense, but New Orleans beat themselves with costly turnovers and penalties and two trips inside the 5-yard line that resulted in no points. Tulane finished their regular season with a 27-24 win over Cincinnati to secure home-field advantage in the AAC title game against UCF. The Knights are one of two teams to beat Tulane this season. Rumors have swirled with reports that Green Wave Head Coach Willie Fritz may be leaving for Georgia Tech in the offseason. The reports were later retracted and Fritz said that right now he’s just focused on preparing his team…

Liberty coach and former Mississippi State head coach Hugh Freeze has agreed to be the next Auburn Head Coach. He will replace Bryan Harsin who was fired earlier this year and become Auburn’s third Head Coach in the last four years.

The Pelicans will host the Thunder tonight. OKC has lost 4 of their last 5 but the Pelicans are hoping to bounce back from a 132-111 loss to the Grizzlies last week. The Pels will be without CJ McCullom for the second straight game and all-star forward Brandon Ingram is doubtful. Larry Nance and Naji Marshall are both questionable for the matchup, but 2020 first-round draft pick Kira Lewis is available for tonight’s game after missing last season with an MCL sprain. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m.

Tulane is preparing to host Central Florida in the American Athletic Conference Championship game on Saturday, but there are rumors that coach Willie Fritz will be the next head coach at Georgia Tech. The 62-year-old Fritz is 41-and-45 in his seven seasons at Tulane.

For the first time since 2002 the Saints were shutout in an NFL regular season game as they lost to the 49ers 13 to nothing in San Francisco yesterday. San Fran leads the NFL in fewest yards per game given up. But New Orleans had chances. However kicker Will Lutz missed a field goal, Alvin Kamara fumbled twice for the first time in his career and Coach Dennis Allen says there were some passes that could have been caught…

LSU men’s basketball held off Wofford yesterday 78-75. The game featured 19 lead changes and Adam Miller had 26 points. Northwestern State State is now 5-and-2 after beating Bethune-Cookman 69-66 yesterday.

Kelly said yesterday that quarterback Jayden Daniels will be in a walking point through today after injuring his ankle on Saturday. Kelly is optimistic he’ll be able to practice tomorrow.

In other college football news, the Ragin Cajuns beat Texas State to get bowl eligible on Saturday, Southern defeated Grambling in the Bayou Classic and will play Jackson State in the SWAC championship game, Southeastern won its F-C-S won its playoff game against Idaho and will play Samford on Saturday.

It was not a surprise to see the Saints offense struggle. San Francisco leads the NFL in fewest yards per game given up. But New Orleans had some chances, but kicker Will Lutz missed a field goal, Alvin Kamara fumbled twice and there were some difficult catches not made by receivers.

The loss dropped the Black and Gold’s record to four and eight. They visit Tampa Bay a week from tonight. The Buccaneers lost in overtime to fall to 5-and-6, but they are in first place in the NFC South.

Let’s take a look at some high school football playoff scores from last night. In Division Four-select, Ouachita Christian is headed to the semi-finals for the fourth consecution season as the Eagles defeated Glenbrook 28-27 to snap their 17 game winning streak.

St. Martin’s in New Orleans is headed to the semi-finals for the first time ever as they defeated St. Mary’s 29-25. In Division Four, non-select, Oak Grove was a winner over Kentwood 20-14. The Tigers will visit Haynesville next week.

Ruston is in the semifinals for the first time since 1999 as the Bearkats beat Denham Springs 49-31. Ruston hosts Zachary who defeated Southside 48-37.

In Division One-select, Catholic High advances as they took down Edna Karr 32-24.

One of the bigger upsets last night. Westgate beat second seeded Neville 21-10. and Carencro beat the top seed in Division One-Select, Warren Easton 29-26.

It’s the final full weekend of college football. 5th ranked LSU is at Texas A-and-M. Rain is not in the forecasdt in College Station. Ragin Cajuns need a win at Texas State to get bowl eligible. ULM is looking for its fifth win of the season as they host Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech looks to upset UAB in Ruston. Grambling also looking to pull off an upset as they face Southern in the Bayou Classic in New Orleans. Southeastern Louisiana hosts Idaho in an FCS playoff game.

Tomorrow the Saints, visit the 49ers. San Francisco has Nick Bosa, who leads the N-F-C in sacks with 10.5. New Orleans Quarterback Andy Dalton says Bosa is as good as it gets when it comes to rushing the passer…

19th-ranked Tulane will host the American Athletic Conference Championship next Saturday after beating 24th-ranked Cincinnati 27–24 today, ending the Bearkats’ 32-game home winning streak. Tyjae Spears rushed for 181 yards and 2 TDS.

In the World Cup….the U-S and England played to a zero-zero draw and will need to beat Iran on Tuesday to advance to the knockout stage.

The Ragin Cajuns can qualify for a bowl game with a win on Saturday against Texas State. ULM could keep Southern Miss out of a bowl game if the Warhawks can knock off the Golden Eagles. Southern is playing for a trip to the SWAC Championship game when they face Grambling in the Bayou Classic at 1 PM on Saturday.

Louisiana Tech closes out the regular season on Saturday when they host UAB. The Blazers are led by running back DeWayne McBride, who is the fifth-leading rusher in college football, with 1,441 rushing yards. Bulldogs Coach Sonny Cumbie says it will take a team effort to slow down McBride
