The Pelicans have a winnable game tonight as they host the Spurs who are 19 and 52.

The LSU women’s basketball program is headed to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2014. Angel Reese was dominant as she had 25 points and 24 rebounds and the Lady Tigers held Michigan to a season-low for points in a 66-42 win in front of a raucous crowd at the PMAC. Despite losing to Texas A-and-M eight to six on Sunday, LSU remains ranked number one in all of the preseason polls. And third baseman Tommy White was named SEC Player of the Week. In four games last week, he was 9 for 19 for at the plate with one home runs and eleven runs driven in.

New Saints running back Jamaal Williams comes to New Orleans after leading the NFL in rushing touchdowns with 17 last year. He also rushed for 1,066 yards and averaged 4.1 yards a carry. But Williams says he also has the capability to break off long runs…

In basketball, the Pelicans defeated the Rockets 117 to 107 last night as New Orleans is a half game back of tenth place for the final spot in the Western Conference playoffs.

Third-seeded LSU women’s basketball is headed to the Sweet 16 after beating Michigan 66-42 yesterday in front of ten-thousand fans at the Maravich Center. LSU held Michigan to a season-low in points and outrebounded the Wolverines 46-26. LSU led by 15 at half, but Michigan quickly scored the first five points of the second half. So Coach Kim Mulkey called a time-out and reminded the team of blowing a 17-point lead against Tennessee in the SEC Tournament…

The top ranked LSU baseball team’s 13-game winning streak ended yesterday as the Tigers bullpen gave up four runs in eighth inning as Texas A-and-M rallied to beat the Tigers eight to six. Chase Shores and Christian Little each allowed two runs as LSU had to settle for a series victory in College Station.

New Saints defensive tackle Khalen Saunders had a career-high 3.5 sacks last season and also a career-high 48 tackles with the Super Bowl champion Chiefs. Saunders says it was a read-and-react defense in Kansas City and likes that the Saints play a more attacking style of “D”…

Former Saints defensive back C-J Gardner Johnson has signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions. Gardner-Johnson had a career-high six interceptions after New Orleans traded him to Philadelphia last season.

The top ranked LSU baseball team failed to hold on to an early four run lead and lost to Texas A-and-M eight to six. The Aggies scored four runs in the eighth inning to take the lead. Christian Little suffered the loss and four LSU pitchers walked seven hitters on the afternoon.

After blowing a double digit lead on Friday in Houston and losing to the Rockets, the Pelicans were able to preserve a double digit lead in Houston last night as defeated the Rockets 117 to 107. Coach Willie Green says Friday night’s bad experience paid off last night…

Brandon Ingram and C-J McCollum each had 26 points and Jonas Valanciunas had a double-double, 21 points and 12 rebounds. The Pels are a half-game back from the final spot in the play-in tournament and will host San Antonio on Tuesday.

Back to college baseball…The Ragin Cajuns opened up Sun Belt play by sweeping Arkansas State. ULM was swept by Old Dominion. La Tech lost to Charlotte nine to nothing yesterday and dropped the series to the 49ers.

LSU is heading to the second round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball after beating Hawaii 73 to 50 in the PMAC yesterday. The Lady Tigers won despite shooting 44-percent from the field and just 1 of 14 from three-point territory. Coach Kim Mulkey is not too concerned…

LSU will play Michigan in the second round on Sunday night. The Wolverines defeated U-N-L-V 71-59 yesterday. Southeastern Louisiana lost in its first every appearance in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, 95-to-43 to second seeded Iowa.

The top ranked LSU baseball team opened SEC play last night with a nine to nothing win over Texas A-and-M. Paul Skenes struck out eleven in 6.1 innings for his fifth win on the season. Third baseman Tommy White drove in three runs.

The Ragin Cajuns trounced Arkansas State 15 to 4 to open Sun Belt play. U-L Lafayette scored seven runs in the first inning and Jake Hammond recorded a career-high ten strikeouts.

ULM lost in ten innings to Old Dominion five to three. Louisiana Tech topped Charlotte two to one. Jonathan Fincher pitched six strong innings.

Northwestern State defeated Little Rock nine to four. McNeese over Yale seven to one. Memphis defeated Southeastern Louisiana Four to three and Nebraska swept a doubleheader from Nicholls.

Grambling won over Southern eight to seven in 12 innings to open up SWAC play.

Bad loss for the Pelicans last night as they blew a double digit lead in the fourth quarter and fell to the Rockets 114 to 112. The same two teams will play again Sunday in Houston.

Williams spent the last two seasons in the Motor City and in 2022 he rushed for an NFL high 17 touchdowns. Williams signed a three-year contract with the Saints worth an estimated 12 million dollars.

With their playoff hopes fading, the Pelicans are in Houston this weekend. They’ll take on the Rockets tonight and Sunday. It begins a stretch of games where New Orleans will play teams that are not in the playoff hunt. Houston is 17-and-52, but the Pels are 10-and-23 since January 1st.

After leading Scotlandville to 14 consecutive boys basketball state championship game appearances, Carlos Sample has decided to step down. Sample won eight titles during that 14 year run.

The 13th seeded Ragin Cajuns men’s basketball team found itself down by 18 points with eleven minutes to go, but battled back, however they could not get over the hump and lost to fourth-seeded Tennessee 58-55 in last night’s first round of the NCAA Tournament. They came up short in the SEC tournament, blowing a 17-point lead to Tennessee, but will hope to bounce back against 14-seeded Hawaii. All-American forward Angel Reese has led the Tigers this season, and Coach Kim Mulkey says she’s elevated her game after the tough loss…

The Saints have started the new league year by replenishing the interior D-line, signing chiefs tackle Khalen Saunders and Jets tackle Nathan Sheperd. They also made a splash by signing the league leader in rushing touchdowns last year, Detroit running back Jamaal Williams to a three year 12 million dollar deal.

On the first day of the new league year, the Saints moved quickly to rebuild their D-Line by signing a pair of defensive tackles. New Orleans has reportedly signed Kansas City’s Khalen Saunders and the New York Jets’ Nathan Shepherd. Shepherd is 29-years-old and had a career-high in tackles with 27 last season. While Saunders is 26 years old and in 2022 he had career-high 3.5 sacks for the Super Bowl champs.

New Orleans has also reportedly signed free agent running back Jamaal Williams, who led the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns last season. Williams also rushed for 1,066 yards for the Lions last year.

And in a social media post, Saints Q-B Jameis Winston says he’s still a championship caliber starting quarterback but getting healthy and staying healthy is his number one priority, which is why he’s re-signed for one more year in New Orleans to be Derek Carr’s back-up.

The 13th seeded Ragin Cajuns are 11.5 point underdogs heading into tonight’s NCAA first round matchup against Tennessee in Orlando. Coach Bob Marlin says he kept an eye on the Volunteers this season…

Tennessee is playing in its fifth straight NCAA Tournament under head coach Rick Barnes. UL Lafayette and the Vols have met in the Big Dance two other times, 2000 and 1982 and in both games Tennessee won.

In baseball last night, the Ragin Cajuns lost to Mississippi State four to two in Biloxi. Louisiana Tech lost to Air Force 12 to 10. Bulldog pitchers hit five batters.

And Southern lost to Sacred Heart 57-47 in a First Four game in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. And Louisiana Tech is at Arkansas tonight in the opening round of the W-N-I-T.
