Saints Coach Dennis Allen confirms defensive end Payton Turner will miss some time after injuring his toe in Sunday’s season opening win over Tennessee. Turner is in his third season and he’s only appeared in 14 games because of injuries.

Todd Garvin only coached one game at West Monroe before he was fired. The school announced Garvin’s termination yesterday. He was suspended last week after a player needed to go to the hospital suffering from a heat-related illness. It was the fourth time that has happened since Garvin took over in May.

The Saints started the 2023 season with a 16-15 victory over the Tennessee Titans yesterday. The two teams traded field goals in the first half, but New Orleans finally got in the end zone in the third quarter as Rashid Shaheed caught a TD pass. The Panthers lost to Atlanta 24-10 yesterday. Carolina rookie quarterback Bryce Young threw his first touchdown pass, but he was held to 146 yards passing and intercepted twice.

The Tigers will open SEC play in Starkville on Saturday. The Mississippi State Bulldogs no longer run an air raid offense, instead they want to run the ball first and play good defense. They beat Arizona 31-24 in OT on Saturday.

LSU’s SEC home opener against Arkansas on September 23rd will kick off at 6 PM. La Tech’s game at Nebraska will kick-off at 2:30 that day and the Ragin Cajuns home game on the 23rd against Buffalo will kick off at 6:30.

The Saints offense was far from midseason form yesterday, but they did enough to beat Tennessee 16-15 in front of a loud Superdome crowd. Quarterback Derek Carr made his first start in a Saints uniform and threw for 305 yards and a touchdown. He was also intercepted once. Carr says it was a very physical game…

Saints defensive end Payton Turner left the game and he’s reportedly going to miss some time with a turf toe injury. The NFL Network reports Turner will need surgery. The former first round pick has been injury prone, only appearing in 14 games in three seasons.

Elsewhere in the NFC South on Sunday….Tampa Bay upset the Vikings in Minnesota 20-17 and Atlanta knocked off Carolina 24-10. New Orleans visits the Panthers a week from tonight.

LSU Quarterback Jayden Daniels threw for a career-high five touchdowns in Saturday night’s lopsided 72-10 win over Grambling State. Coach Brian Kelly promised more playing time for receiver Chris Hilton and he caught two passes for 53 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown catch as he burned the defense on a post pattern.

Also, freshman right tackle Lance Heard got playing time in the second series and there’s a chance we could see more of Heard this Saturday in Starkville against Mississippi State.

The Ragin Cajuns lost their season opener to Old Dominion 38-31. ULM is 2-0 after beating Lamar 24-14. Louisiana Tech trounced Northwestern State 51-21. Bulldogs running back Keith Willis Junior rushed for 188 yards and two TDs.

It wasn’t a pretty game, but the Saints got the job done yesterday beating the Tennessee Titans 16-15 in Sunday’s season opener. New Orleans offense was kept out of the end zone in the first half, but Derek Carr connected with Rashid Shaeed on a 19-yard touchdown pass to give the Saints the lead 16-9. Carr threw for 305 yards…

The Saints defense played well as they intercepted Ryan Tannehill three times and sacked him three times. Marshon Lattimore had four pass breakups. Blake Grupe made three field goals.

New Orleans next game is a week from tonight at Carolina. The Panthers opened the season with a 24-10 loss to Atlanta. Also in the NFC South, Tampa Bay upset Minnesota 20-17.

The LSU Board of Supervisors has approved a new ten-year contract worth 36 million dollars for coach Kim Mulkey. It’s the richest contract in women’s college basketball history. One board member voted against it. Jay Blossman would rather see coaches get huge bonuses for winning championships, not huge new contracts…

Saints’ rookie quarterback Jake Haener has been suspended six games following an announcement from the league Wednesday he violated the performance enhancing drug policy. The 4th round pick out of Fresno State will be eligible to return to the Saints’ active roster on October 16th. Haener wasn’t likely to see much playing time this season slotted behind Carr, Jameis Winston and possibly Taysom Hill on the depth chart.

Bengals Quarterback Joe Burrow says he’s on track to play in Sunday’s opener at Cleveland after a calf injury sidelined him for most of the preseason.

LSU Women’s Basketball Coach Kim Mulkey has reportedly agreed to a 10-year, $32 million dollar contract extension that will make her the highest paid coach in women’s basketball. The deal is pending final approval from the LSU Board of Supervisors which meets Friday. Mulkey has yet to see a win for her Tigers over South Carolina. They’ll take a third shot on January 25th as the SEC released next season’s schedule Wednesday afternoon.

LSU Coach Brian Kelly is “giddy” about the return of defensive tackle Maason Smith on Saturday night when the Tigers host Grambling. Smith was suspended for the season opener for getting paid for autographs before NIL took effect. Kelly says Smith hasn’t played in over a year:

Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow said today he plans to play in week one despite missing nearly the entire preseason with a calf injury.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have shut down former LSU pitcher Paul Skenes for the rest of 2023 as the major league team says they will now get him ready for the 2024 season.

The LSU women’s basketball SEC Schedule is out. The Lady Tigers will host South Carolina on January 25th.
