The 5th ranked LSU football team was on the wrong end of a beat down in Orlando last night as Florida State scored 31 unanswered points in the second half en route to a 45-24 victory over the Tigers.

LSU failed to score twice in the red zone in the first half, they muffed another punt and the defense had no answers for Florida State’s offense as quarterback Jordan Travis threw four touchdown passes, three of them to Opelousas native Keon Coleman. Coach Brian Kelly did not expect such a bad performance….

LSU came into this contest as a national title contender, but will likely have to win the rest of its regular season games to be in contention for a spot in the college football playoff. The Tigers are home this Saturday to host Grambling. The Tigers lost Hampton on Saturday 35-31.

ULM is looking for its first winning season since 2012 and the Warhawks season is off to a good start after beating Army 17-13 on Saturday. The Warhawks trailed by ten points in the fourth quarter, but former Ouachita Christian star Hunter Herring came off the bench to help spark the fourth quarter rally. Herring also threw the game winning touchdown pass and Coach Terry Bowden says Herring will start this Saturday’s game against Lamar over Jiya Wright, who threw two interceptions against the Black Knights…

Also in week one, the Ragin Cajuns defeated Northwestern State 38-13. Ben Wooldridge threw three touchdowns and rushed for another, while the defense held the Demons to 187 yards.

24th ranked Tulane trounced South Alabama 37-17 as Michael Pratt threw four touchdown passes.

Louisiana Tech had a rough first half in Dallas and lost to SMU 38-14. McNeese did not look good on Saturday night in Lake Charles and were outclassed by Tarleton State in the second half and lost 52-34.

24th ranked Tulane is coming off a Cotton Bowl victory over USC. Today they will host South Alabama. The Ragin Cajuns lost last year in the Independence Bowl and tonight they host Northwestern State. ULM has gone 4-and-8 in Terry Bowden’s first two seasons. Tonight the Warhawks begin the season by hosting Army.

Southeastern Louisiana is the preseason favorite in the Southland and the Lions start the season in Starkville by taking on Mississippi State. McNeese begins its 80th season of football by hosting Tarleton. Grambling is in New Jersey playing Hampton in the inaugural Prudential Brick City Kickoff Classic.

High school f0otball last night, Lafayette Christian over Acadiana 61-38, Marksville beat Avoyelles 33-28, Bogalusa beat Franklinton 36-31, Parkway outscored Minden 43-41. Pineville beat Winnfield 20-14, Warren Easton over Ruston 20-19, Ouachita edged Rummel 21-20. The Brusly Port Allen game ended at halftime because of a fatal shooting near the concession stand.

24th ranked Tulane looks to duplicate its magical season from a year ago that ended with a win over USC in the Cotton Bowl. They begin the 2023 campaign by hosting South Alabama. Two good quarterbacks in this game. Michael Pratt for the Wave and Carter Bradley for the Jags.

The Ragin Cajuns open the 2023 campaign by hosting Northwestern State. Ben Woolridge will start at quarterback U-L. It’s his first game since tearing his ACL last November.

La Tech is at SMU. It was announced today SMU, Cal and Stanford are joining the ACC.

The high school football season got underway last night with a barn burner in Monroe as Neville defeated Evangel 30-29 in overtime. The Eagles went for two in overtime to try the win the game, but the Tigers defense stopped Texas A-and-M recruit Gabe Reliford.

Defensive end Jared Verse is a future first round pick, defensive tackle Fabian Lovett is also a difference maker, defensive end Patrick Payton was the 2022 ACC Rookie of the Year last season and Western Michigan transfer Braden Fiske was someone LSU was interested in signing.

The Saints have added a couple of running backs to their practice squad, Tony Jones and Jordan Mims. Coach Dennis Allen says rookie running back Kendre Miller has a hamstring injury and remember Alvin Kamara is suspended for the first three games of the season.

LSU is looking forward to getting another chance at Florida State. The Tigers played poorly for three quarters last season in the loss to the Seminoles, before LSU Quarterback Jaydn Daniels led LSU on a furious fourth quarter comeback. Daniels says he’s watched that game a lot and realizes they left out of plays on the field. He’s ready for what F-S-U will bring this year…

The Saints signed 16 players to their practice squad and that includes linebacker Jaylon Smith and wide receivers Jontre Kirklin and Shaq Davis.

Louisiana Tech got the win against Florida International in week zero, but now Coach Sonny Cumbie and the Bulldogs have turned their attention to a trip to Dallas to play SMU on Saturday.

SMU’s Quarterback is Preston Stone. He was a four-star recruit out of Dallas. Only played in three games in 2021, and made one start last season against Tulsa and was 11 of 17 for 219 yards and one touchdown.

There is a college football game tonight in Thibodaux as Nicholls hosts Sacramento State. The Hornets are ranked in the top ten in the FCS after going 12-and-1 last season. Nicholls is looking to bounce back from a 3-and-8 campaign last year. Kick-off is at 6 PM.

The Saints made a whole bunch of moves yesterday as they had to get their roster down to 53 players by 3 PM. New Orleans traded kicker Wil Lutz to the Broncos, waived punter Blake Gillikin and released cornerback Bradley Roby and linebacker Jaylon Smith. Coach Dennis Allen says even though they are at 53 players right now, the roster is far from set…

Linebacker Jaylon Smith could be one guy that does return to the team.

New Orleans will go with Blake Grupe as its field goal kicker. Lutz will re-join Sean Payton in Denver after missing a career-high eight field goals last season. Also, Lou Hedley will handle punting duties. Both Grupe and Hedley are undrafted rookie free agents.

Special teams was a problem for LSU last season as they struggled handling punts and kicks. The Tigers had two blocked kicks last year against Florida State. But Coach Brian Kelly says they should be better this season with Aaron Anderson returning punts and Anderson and Kaleb Jackson returning kicks…

The Southland Conference has announced Lake Charles will continue to host the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments through 2029. The games will be played at McNeese’s Legacy Center. Southeastern Louisiana will host the Southland baseball and softball tournaments in 2024.

The Demons are coming off a 4-and-7 season and they have a new quarterback, Idaho State transfer Tyler Vander Waal.

Louisiana Tech receiver Smoke Harris has been named Conference USA player of the Week. He caught a career-high 11 passes in Tech’s come from behind win over F-I-U. Tech is at SMU this Saturday.

Today is cut down day in the NFL, the Browns have released former LSU kicker Cade York. Who will the Saints go with at kicker….Will Lutz or Blake Grupe?

The Saints closed out the preseason with a 17-13 loss to Houston. Derek Carr and most of the starters did not play. Quarterback Jameis Winston started and was 11 of 16 for 93 yards and a touchdown. He connected with tight end Jimmy Graham on a 25 yard pass and a three-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. But third-string QB threw two interceptions and finished with a quarterback rating of 36. Coach Dennis Allen wanted to finish the preseason with a win…

The Saints pass rush looked good last night. NIko Lalos, Isaiah Foskey and Malcolm Roach each had a sack. Roach also forced a fumble. The kicking compeition remains tight as Will Lutz tried to hold off rookie free agent Blake Grupe. Grupe made a 38 and 50 yarder last night, but missed from 60. The Saints need to trim the roster down from 90 to 53 by Tuesday afternoon.

Louisiana Tech kicked off the 2023 season with a 22-17 come-from-behind win over Conference USA rival FIU on Saturday night inside Joe Aillet Stadium. Tech trailed by as much as 14 points on two different occasions in the first half, but the Bulldogs ended up scoring 19 unanswered to go 1-and-0 on the season. Quarterback Hank Bachmeier will make his Louisiana Tech debut and expect him to get the ball to Smoke Harris and Cyrus Allen. Harris has scored 19 touchdowns during his career at Tech.

On the defensive side of the ball…Jim Thorpe Award Watch list selection Willie Roberts will be one of the leaders of the season. He had four interceptions last season and the Bulldogs leading tackler from last season, Hugh Davis is also back.

The Saints conclude the preseason tomorrow night in the Superdome as they host the Houston Texans. Coach Dennis Allen has liked what he’s seen from his squad in the preseason…

Derek Carr and several Saints starters will not play in this preseason finale. Houston is expected to play the number two overall pick in this year’s draft, quarterback C-J Stroud. The Texans are the only team in the NFL that has yet to name a starting quarterback for week one.

According to Yahoo Sports, LSU football coach Brian Kelly tried multiple ways to make sure defensive tackle Maason Smith was eligible for the Tigers game against Florida State on September 3rd. One scenario was to play Grambling State, their opponent on September 9th, during week zero, which means the game would have been played today. Smith is suspended for the season opener for participating in an autograph session before NIL went into effect. Multiple appeals were denied.

The Saints are mourning the death of former defensive coordinator Steve Sidwell. He was in charge of those great Dome Patrol defenses in the 1980s and 90s. He helped develop one of the greatest linebacker units in NFL history with Rickey Jackson, Pat Swilling, Sam Mills and Vaughn Johnson. Sidwell died Wednesday night at the age of 78. He was inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame in 2004.

Many Saints fans are wondering if second-year head coach Dennis Allen can lead the Black and Gold to the playoffs. Linebacker Demario Davis likes what he’s seen from Allen so far this season…

Louisiana Tech was set to unveil the A-L Williams Champions Plaza tonight, but the school says one of the six statues has not arrived yet. The Plaza will honor La Tech legends Terry Bradshaw, Fred Dean, Karl Malone, Kim Mulkey, Willie Roaf and Teresa Weatherspoon.

U-L Lafayette has agreed to contract extensions with men’s basketball coach Bob Marlin and softball coach Gerry Glasco. Both coaches led their teams to Sun Belt tournament championships last season.
