A Louisiana businessman says his insurance rates went up over 40% and he’s not sure how long he can take it. Mel Bridges has the story.

In Washington, House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana has said he supports our state’s new law mandating the Ten Commandments be displayed in public school classrooms.The law, which has sparked controversy across the country requires the Ten Commandments be in Louisiana classrooms beginning in 2025 and requires the posters include three paragraphs about their influential role in American history. Johnson has said he believes the law will withstand any legal challenges.

It would have given the Governor’s office the power to more easily pardon some first time marijuana possession offenders, but governor Jeff Landry has vetoed the law approved by lawmakers saying it joins President Biden’s quote “soft on crime, no consequences for criminals agenda”. But New Orleans Representative Delisha Boyd, who authored the bill, says it was simply a shot at a second chance.

Data from the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics shows Louisiana’s unemployment rate went down 4.1% last month. Cities across the state added jobs from April to May, including Baton Rouge and Alexandria, but Monro saw a pretty significant loss and Louisiana Workforce Commission Director of Research and Economic Analysis Emily Epps says that’s concerning.

Archie, Cooper, Payton and Eli Manning will join more than 140 coaches teaching the fundamentals of offensive technique and schemes. Experts say the capitol city alone added 200 jobs from May to June and almost seven thousand jobs since May of last year. The 2024 NBA Draft was last night and will be remembered for all the talented European players drafted, and big trades throughout the night. The Pelicans had the twenty-first pick in the draft and selected Yves Missi. Missi is a 6’ 11’ Center from Baylor and has the potential to be a real presence in the paint. The Pels will open up preseason play against the Magic on October 7th.

Archie, Cooper, Payton, and Eli Manning, as well as more than 140 coaches will teach the next generation of talented high school offensive players about offensive technique and scheme. Legendary quarterback Archie Manning started the camp as a way to help develop regional high school quarterbacks and never expected his passing academy to grow past just a regional event.

The aftermath of Jim Schlossnagle’s move from Texas A&M to Texas is causing chaos in College Station. Many Texas A&M players, including two major players in Jace LaViolette and Gavin Grahovac entered the transfer portal three days after playing in Game 3 of the Men’s College World Series. This move is set to significantly impact the team’s dynamics and future prospects as LaViolette is a high draft prospect in 2025, and Grahovac was the SEC Freshman of the Year.

LSU Eunice baseball’s Head Coach Jeff Willis has earned multiple American Baseball Coaches Association awards and more than 1,000 wins this past season. Willis received the Gulf District Regional Coach of the year and the national coach of the year awards in a season where LSU Eunice went 56 and 8 and earned its eighth NJCAA Division II title.

And LSU finished thirteenth in the Directors’ Cup Standing for 2023-2024 year. The Tigers earned the most points from their gymnastics national championship and placed 5th among SEC teams in the Cup race.

The man accused of killing a Loranger woman and her four-year-old daughter is now listed as an inmate in the Plaquemines Parish Detention Center. Daniel Callihan had been held in Mississippi since his arrest June 13th. The Plaquemines Parish Detention Center is one of three jails that hold inmates for New Orleans federal court. Callihan has already been charged in Mississippi and Tangipahoa Parish.

Hine says his insurance payments went from 300-thousand dollars to over a million, which he was able to negotiate down. He feels increasingly frustrated that he keeps having to pay more.

Hine met with Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple, who told him insurance relief would come from tort reform legislation. However, that’s on hold after Governor Jeff Landry vetoed a bill that attempted to prevent windfall judgments for car crash victims. Landry expressed concern the bill would prevent a car crash victim from getting the judgment they deserved and would hurt the everyday working citizen. Hine says any insurance relief would help his company pay the bills and keep their customers.

The bill which received bipartisan support, Boyd says was an attempt to give individuals a second chance so they would have a fair opportunity at things like employment and housing that require a criminal background check.

First-time offenders found with less than 14 grams of marijuana would have been eligible under House Bill 391.

QB’s, wide receivers, running backs, and tight ends will attend seminars, participate in meetings, run through drills, and scrimmage one another over three days of camp. A strong line of storms is moving through northwest Louisiana and much of the northern half of the state is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 7 PM. The Monroe-Ruston area is under a severe thunderestorm warning until 3:15 PM.

A Ragin Cajuns legend has been named as the new head coach of the U-L Lafayette softball team. Crowley native Alyson Habetz was a two-sport star for the Cajuns and led the team to the Women’s College World Series in ‘93. Habetz will be officially introduced Friday.
