The investigation continues into the deadly shooting of a former mayor of Minden and his daughter by a young family member. 82-year-old Joe Cornelius and his 31-year-old daughter, Keisha Miles, were shot to death inside their home Sunday morning. Police Chief Jared McIver says investigators quickly zeroed in on one of two juveniles who were home at the time.

The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says the investigation began in July as investigators were looking into an unrelated incident when they discovered the video of Taryn Varnell taking the deer and choking it to death. If convicted on the felony charge of aggravated cruelty to animals, Varnell could face up to $25 thousand dollars in fines and up to ten years in jail.

South Louisiana homeowners interested in up to a 10-thousand dollar grant that can be used towards a new fortified roof, can register with the Department of Insurance from September 18 to September 20.  Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple says once the lottery registration period closes, they will randomly select 300 participants from the pool of eligible registrants.

Varnell is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, which is a felony with fines of up to $25,000 and up to ten years in prison.

Governor Jeff Landry is petitioning LSU to bring back the tradition of having its live tiger mascot inside the stadium for home football games.  That’s according to a report from the Louisiana Illuminator.  Mike VII, has never attended a football game and according to the report he won’t attend any this season.

A teenage girl is dead in a crash in Lafayette. She was among six juveniles and an adult in a vehicle being driven by a 14-year-old boy. Police Sergeant Matthew Benoit (BEN-wah) says the boy was driving recklessly when he crashed. He says the boy tried to escape but didn’t get very far.

The boy is in juvenile detention and is facing four charges. Benoit notes that while investigators have established that the vehicle was stolen, it’s unclear whether that 14-year-old driver was the one who stole it.

If you’re a hunter, the Louisiana Second Amendment Weekend Sales Tax Holiday is back again Friday through Sunday. Bryon Henderson with the Department of Revenue says guns, ammunition and safety gear are exempt. However:

For the second time in as many weeks, a raccoon knocked out power in Terrebonne Parish. The raccoon got into the Eddison power substation in Houma, plunging six-thousand customers into darkness. Parish President Jason Bergeron (BAA-zher-on) says unfortunately, there’s little if anything that can be done about animals getting into the substation.

Bergeron says this comes as the parish continues repairing powerlines damaged by Hurricane Ida.

The deadly shooting of a former mayor of Minden and his daughter by a young family member Sunday is still under investigation. 82-year-old Joe Cornelius and his 31-year-old daughter, Keisha Miles, were shot to death inside their home. Police Chief Jared McIver says when questioned, the story of one of the juveniles in the home at the time didn’t add up. Due to juvenile justice laws, they are only saying that the 11-year-old boy is a family member. As for a motive, that is still unknown.

The boy is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and is being held on 500-thousand dollars.

The 4-year-old child who died after he shot and killed himself with a gun found in the console of a pick-up truck Sunday morning has been identified as Hudson Tassin, son of Brusly City Council Member, Blake Tassin. According to the West Baton Rouge parish Sheriff’s office the child found the gun when an adult stepped out of the truck to adjust a trailer. Authorities have turned over the results of their investigation to the district attorney.

Chief McIver says due to juvenile justice laws, they are only saying that the 11-year-old boy is a family member without getting more specific. McIver says it will take a long time to determine what led the boy to shoot the two victims dead. He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and his bond is set at 500-thousand dollars.

A teenage girl is dead in a crash in Lafayette. Police Sergeant Matthew Benoit (BEN-wah) says this happened early yesterday morning.

Benoit notes that while investigators have established that the vehicle was stolen, it’s unclear whether that 14-year-old driver was the one who stole it. The girl who died is identified as 17-year-old Terry Mitchell of Lafayette. She was riding in the back seat.

The girl who died is identified as 17-year-old Terry Mitchell of Lafayette. The 14-year-old boy tried running off but was caught and is now in juvenile detention facing four charges.

A former city councilman in Minden, in Webster Parish, and his daughter are shot dead, and the suspect is a ten-year-old boy. 82-year-old Joe Cornelius and his 31-year-old daughter, Keisha Miles, were found dead inside their home. Minden Police Chief Jared McIver says there were two juveniles inside the home at the time.
