Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge is the sixth entity in Louisiana to distribute the Newborn Essential Support Toolkit. Through a partnership between the Department of Health and Human Services and the non-profit organization Baby2Baby, the kits include things like diapers, wipes, skin cream, clothes and other essentials. Congresswoman Julia Letlow, who helped Woman’s unveil the kits, says it gives new parents peace of mind.

The New Orleans Police Department has identified the officers who fatally shot Shamsud-Din Jabbar who carried out the New Year’s Day attack on Bourbon Street. NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick officers Nigel Daggs, Christian Byer and Jacobie Jordan are heroes.  All are being recognized for their bravery.

Body camera footage shows officers approaching Samsun Din Jabbar’s pickup truck after it crashed into construction equipment near the intersection of Bourbon and Bienville streets.

Former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy is facing charges of negligent homicide and hit and run after authorities say his reckless driving on Louisiana Highway 20 in Lafourche Parish caused a head-on collision that killed a 78 year old man. L-S-P says the wreck happened on December 17th and Lacy kept driving, failing to stop and render aid or call authorities. Lacy’s agent says Kyren is fully participating in the investigation and they strongly believe the facts will demonstrate the truth.

The agent for former LSU star wide receiver Kyren Lacy issues a statement following the issuing of a warrant for his arrest. Louisiana State Police say on December 17th, Lacy was driving recklessly when he caused a crash on Highway 20 in Lafourche Parish that killed 78-year-old Herman Hall of Thibodaux. Lacy’s agent says he is fully cooperating with authorities and that the facts will ultimately demonstrate the truth.

The St. Helena Parish Sheriff’s Office says two children are among three people who were stabbed to death, in a domestic disturbance incident that took place near Amite Thursday. Sheriff Clay Chutz says 31-year-old Ryant Jones has been arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder. Chutz calls it “a horrible tragedy.” The victims’ ages are 40 years, ten years, and one year old.

An arrest warrant has been issued for LSU standout receiver Kyren Lacy. He’s facing charges of negligent homicide and felony hit and run stemming from an investigation into a December 17th fatal crash on Hwy 20 in Lafourche Parish that killed 78-year-old Herman Hall of Thibodaux. State Police investigators say Lacy recklessly passed multiple vehicles at a high rate of speed crossing the centerline causing other vehicles to swerve to avoid him and leading to a head on collision of those vehicles. Investigators say Lacy drove around the crash without stopping or reporting his involvement. The investigation is ongoing.

Letlow says these kits gives new parents one less thing to worry about, especially at a time when they have lots of things to worry about.

Southeastern Louisiana University is once again collecting discarded Christmas trees to enhance local wetlands. Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station Manager Rob Moreau says this initiative marks its 30th year.

Instead of going into landfills, the discarded trees are used to combat erosion and create wildlife habitats in the Manchac (MAN-shack) Swamp Wetlands.

Seven victims of the attack on Bourbon Street have filed a lawsuit against the city and two of its contractors, alleging they failed to protect the street from what happened on New Year’s Day morning, an assailant driving down the street at a high rate of speed. Loyola University Law professor Dane Ciolino says a lawsuit targeting private contractors instead of the police department could be successful….

The suit takes aim at one of the contractors Mott MacDonald, alleging the firm was warned Bourbon Street was vulnerable to a vehicle attack. Ciolino adds it may take years for this suit to be resolved.

Former New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton met with the media yesterday. He’s the consultant brought in to help New Orleans Police with its security plan for the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras…

Governor Jeff Landry has named Scott Ballard as the new president of the LSU Board of Supervisors. Ballard is a co-owner of P-J’s Coffee and according to the Advocate newspaper helped raise substantial amounts of money for Landry’s gubernatorial campaign. Ballard is not an LSU grad and this is his second stint on the LSU Board of Supervisors.

The oldest institute of higher education in Louisiana is celebrating a milestone this year. Andrew Greenstein reports.
