One man is dead and another is facing some serious charges in a crash on I-10 in St. John the Baptist Parish. Jacob Sellers, of Sorrento, is suspected of being impaired while his car careened across two lanes, struck several guard rails, crashed into another car, and then flipped over several times. State Police Spokesperson Melissa Matey says it’s an ongoing investigation, but a number of factors are suspected…

Louisiana State Police is investigating a fatal hit and run accident that occurred over the weekend near Kentwood. Master Trooper Greg Marchand says 22-year-old Matthew Mahler of Vacherie and a friend were riding four-wheelers in a ditch along Louisiana Highway 10 when Mahler had an accident and was ejected from his vehicle into the roadway, then run over by a car that fled the scene. Marchand says they are searching for a small dark colored sedan…

According to “Governing” magazine, Louisiana is the seventh most popular state for millennials. Millennials are defined as persons born between 1981 and 2000. The magazine states that 28.5-percent of Louisiana’s population falls into the millennial age bracket. That is the largest age group living in the Bayou State. Excluding Washington, DC, Louisiana has the highest concentration of millennials in the eastern half of the United States.

The East Baton Rouge District Attorney has reduced the charges against LSU junior safety Jalen Mills from felony second degree battery to misdemeanor simple battery. The charges stem from a May incident where Mills allegedly punched a woman near his apartment. DA Hillar Moore says the second degree battery charge was the arrest charge and his office believes the misdemeanor charge is appropriate after reviewing evidence and reports.

It’s been two years since the massive sinkhole in Bayou Corne happened and resident frustrations over the disaster continue. The collapsed salt dome caused the evacuation of 350 people. Scientists believe the sinkhole is stabilizing, but Director of the Assumption Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, John Boudreaux, is skeptical. He does say it has been a while since any land has fallen into the sinkhole…

He says a settlement in a lawsuit between Texas Brine and residents should bring some closure and help residents move on with their lives.

Tropical Storm Bertha is now Hurricane Bertha. Bertha intensified into a hurricane this morning. Bertha is the second hurricane to form this hurricane season. Hurricane Bertha is not expected to make landfall in the United States and die out in the Atlantic Ocean.

Gas prices have been steadily falling throughout the past week. The current statewide average for a gallon of regular is $3.30 which is down almost 6 cents from this time last week. We pay 20 cents less for gas than the national average and analyst in Louisiana say we could be down below $3.20 before the end of August.

State Police say a Lake Charles man is under arrest on several charges for allegedly pretending to be a police officer when he was stopped by a trooper yesterday evening. They say 22-year-old Derek Felice produced identification indicating he was a Welsh Police officer but an investigation of the claim revealed he was a former officer and was no longer employed there. He is charged with false impersonation, speeding 69 miles per hour in a 55 and expired vehicle inspection.

Louisiana State Police say a man from Vacherie died when he was run over by a hit and run vehicle after he was thrown from his 4-wheeler. They say 22-year-old Matthew Mahler was traveling near a drainage ditch on the ATV when he hit a culvert and was thrown into the westbound lane of Highway 10 near Kentwood. A witness says a sedan approached and did not stop when he hit the man lying in the road. Mahler was pronounced dead at the scene and authorities are looking for the car.

He says Scientists believe the sinkhole is stabilizing, and Boudreaux added there are no immediate safety concerns posed by the it at this time.

Authorities say a fire is out after an explosion Sunday night at a biodesel plant in Norco. The St. Charles Parish Emergency Operations Center reported the blast a the Diamond Green Biodiesel facility around 9:30pm last night. The cause of the blaze has not been determined and is currently being investigatied. No injuries were reported and air monitoring in the area detected no hazardous chemicals.

551 new laws went into effect in Louisiana yesterday. One of those laws would grant an immediate divorce in domestic violence situations. New Orleans Senator JP Morrell says previously, even if you had tons of evidence that you were a victim of domestic violence, you’d still have to wait 6 months to a year before you get a divorce…

He says now if someone has reasonable proof that they’ve been abused and can show that in court, they will be able to divorce the abuser right away. Morrell says other new laws dealing with domestic violence ban abusers under a protective order from possessing a firearm and those convicted of domestic abuse are prohibited from possessing a firearm for 10 years.
