LSU President and Chancellor F King Alexander says, if the legislature doesn’t restore the massive cut to higher education that’s proposed in Governor Bobby Jindal’s budget, 2,000 classes will be cancelled and every LSU employee will have to be furloughed. Alexander says says there are numerous plans floating around that seek to prevent huge cuts to higher ed, but it’s unclear if any of them will receive the support of the legislature and the governor…

Today, a Terrebonne Parish grand jury will consider the case against a sheriff’s deputy who shot and killed 14-year-old Cameron Tillman last September. The Sheriff’s Department says Deputy Preston Norman fired in self-defense after Tillman appeared to be holding a gun. A 30-year-old Baton Rouge heroin user will spend at least 6 years in prison on charges related to the death of his girlfriend from a fatal overdose. East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore says Brandon Eirick pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute heroin…

It looks like the price at the pump will continue to make our wallets happy. The American Automobile Association reports a gallon of regular on average statewide is $2.22. AAA fuel analyst Don Redman says even the US Department of Energy predicts the national average won’t get above $2.50 for the entire year…:

Texas Senator Ted Cruz officially announced today he’ll seek the Republican presidential nomination.

Friends and family gathered in Hammond today to say farewell to a Louisiana National Guardsman who died in a helicopter crash in Florida. 37-year-old Chief Warrant Officer 4 George Wayne Griffin Jr of Delhi’s funeral started in Hammond and he will be buried in Lafayette with full military honors. Four Louisiana National Guardsmen died in the crash.

Former New Orleans Saints safety Darren Sharper has made a “global” plea deal with prosecutors in 4 states where he is accused of drugging and raping women and sentencing started today. He’ll reportedly serve 9 years behind bars. Legal analyst Doug Sunseri says this type of plea deal means Sharper has agreed to one punishment for all charges…:

The millionaire accused of killing a female friend in California 15 years ago will be staying put in Louisiana. Seventy-one year-old Robert Durst was in court today for a bond hearing on weapons charges, a week after he was discovered at a New Orleans hotel under a fake name, with a gun, passport and a large amount of cash. He had been sent to a prison’s mental health unit, as jail officials said he was a suicide risk.

AAA fuel analyst Don Redman says a forecast from the US Department of Energy indicates that the national averge won’t get above $2.50 a gallon for the entire year…:

Former New Orleans Saints safety Darren Sharper, who pleaded guilty last week to sexual assault charges in three states including Louisiana, will reportedly get 8 years in jail in Nevada. This is called a “global” plea deal to resolve the charges, including federal charges, and all sentences will run concurrently according to legal experts so the 39-year-old will only serve his time in one prison.

A son is in the hospital recovering from a gunshot wound after cops say he was shot by his father when there was no more orange juice in their Baton Rouge home. They say 58-year-old Eldrige Dukes got into a huge fight with his son when he discovered the orange juice was gone and began to chase him around the house with a gun and firing several times eventually striking the teen in the butt. Dukes is charged with attempted manslaughter and illegal use of a dangerous weapon. The son is going to be okay.

State Police say a crash in Sabine Parish has left one teen dead and another injured. Authorities say a truck driven by 16-year-old Kelby Pilcher of Florien crossed the center line and collided with a truck driven by 18-year-old Michael Fair of Many. Pilcher suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Fair was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries. This crash remains under investigation.

State Police say a man from St. Bernard died in a crash around 2:30am. They say 37-year-old Wayne Melerine Jr ran off a road and struck a tree. Speed and impairment are not considered factors in the crash according to investigators, but Melerine was not wearing his seat belt.

Currently, teacher evaluations are determined by students’ standardized test results. Mills says the proposed law would not completely remove the use of test scores as a factor in deciding teacher effectiveness…

Authorities say 32-year-old Schwann Williams was charged with manslaughter after she admitted to deputies that she shot 32-year-old Michael Jerome Stewart during a dispute. Officials say even though it appears that Stewart allegedly attacked Williams, evidence gathered warranted a manslaughter charge against Williams.

The state Department of Transportation and Development is taking part in National Work Zone Awareness Week which runs through Friday. Michelle Southern reports…:
